Saturday, March 7, 2009 - Weeks 27 and 28
I was very ill last week so our schooling was cut short. I guess I could look at it as Cameron learned how to take care of someone that was sick AND he practiced his "keep myself busy so Mama can rest" skills.
Bible:
- Elisha and the Shunnamite woman
- Elisha raises the Shunnamite's dead son
- Naaman is healed
- Greedy servant lies and gets leprosy
- Floating Ax head
- Servant sees a fiery army
- Shunnamite woman
- Joash makes Temple repairs
- Hezekiah cleanses the Temple
Memory:
- Psalm 23:5b ...thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
- Psalm 23:6a Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: ...
Phonics/Reading: Still Cameron's least favorite subject by far. I keep trying to change things up. It seems when I change things, he does better for a little bit and then slips back into his "It's too hard and I'll NEVER get this" attitude. I pray this will not be a struggle through all of his schooling.
Math:
- Place values up to the millions. Hard concept the first day that we introduced thousands, ten thousands and hundred thousands. The second day it clicked with no problems.
- Measuring using inches and centimeters. One of his favorite things to do.
- Continued doing addition, subtraction and multiplication drills. He is improving greatly!
Literature:
- Pilgrim's Progress - Hill Lucre & Demas
- Robin Hood
- The Shooting-Match at Nottingham (Cameron's narration)
- Will Stutely Rescued by His Good Companions (Cameron's narration)
History:
- Joan of Arc
- An Island Story
- ch 52 - The Story of How Prince Hall was Sent to Prison
- ch 53 - Henry V of Monmouth - The Battle of Agincourt
- Child's History of the World - ch 61 Off with the Old, On With the New
Nature:
- Pagoo
- ch 9 - In, Out, Up with Traveling Towers. Traveling Towers is swallowed whole by a fish and then spit out. Then it is picked up by a gull and dropped. TT escapes and Pagoo decides it wasn't worth it and decides to leave
- ch 10 - Houses are Scarce in Tide-Pool Town. Pagoo meets more creatures as he searches for an empty shell.
- ch 11 - A Concrete Tile Can Crawl Both Ways. Pagoo finds a home of his own in the shell of a tube snail. The problem: there is another hermit on the other end.

Poetry: Christian Rossetti
Copywork:
- Memory verses
- Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty! / Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; / Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty! / God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! (Holy, Holy, Holy ~ Heber)
- Holy, Holy, Holy. All the saints adore Thee! / Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea, (Holy, Holy, Holy ~ Heber)
- Free living? Huh! It cost too much misery in the end. From now on he would find his own food. Pagoo stamped a foot. Old Instinct didn't laugh. (Pagoo ~ Holling)
- And what book do you suppose it was that he printed? Why, the book that people thought to be the most important book in the world--the Bible. (Child's History of the World ~ Hillyer)
- Pagoo did a very rash thing. He hopped right out of his brand-new shell and fairly pranced around in victory. Immediately he knew he shouldn't have done it. (Pagoo ~ Holling)

Phonics/Reading
- We are still taking a break from our forward motion. We are still working through our review. I've also started asking him to pick a book, either from his current library books or from his own personal stash. There are a lot of new words and many rules we haven't learned but hopefully he is enjoying it because he has chosen the book.

- Joan of Arc by Diane Stanley - we read the introduction which discussed the 100 Year's War and introduced us to a young Joan. I like how our readings are overlapping other readings
Nature:
- Pagoo (Pagoo is a library book so I am putting Seabird, which we own, on hold and reading more Pagoo)
- ch 7 - Room and Board, Travel Included - Pagoo finds an empty button barnacle. It isn't a perfect fit but it makes him feel much more protected. But there was a twist to his new home, it is the "penthouse apartment" on another hermit crabs shell.

- ch 8 - Around Snail Cousins' Rock - "Traveling Towers" as Pagoo's "aprtment building" is called stops on a leaf of kelp, ver near to some more interesting creatures: limpets, abalones, nudibranch, sea hare and snails. (Did you know snails have teeth on their tongues?) Traveling Towers are swallowed whole in the last sentence!

- But Joan seemed to have brought the French good luck to have put new life inot their armies...after more than a hundred years of fighting, at last they drove the English out of the country. (Child's History of the World ~ Hillyer)
- The war was very reall to Joan, as it was to everyone in Domremy, and they all knew who the enemy was. (Joan of Arc ~ Stanley)

We are officially in the home stretch. We are in the last 12 weeks of school; term three. We had a very busy week with lots of extras. I think there was only one day that we didn't have to rush off to somewhere. We got the essentials done but a few things were put off until next week.

Friday, February 6, 2009 - Weeks 22, 23, and 24
I am finally back on track of where I want us to be but the weeks have gotten all "smooshed" together. So instead of trying to figure out what we did each week I'm making one big entry for the last three weeks.
Bible:
- David spares the life of Saul
- Saul and his sons die in battle
- David becomes king of Israel
- David brings the Ark to Jerusalem
- God's covenant with David
- David and Mephibosheth
- David is judged for numbering the people
- Solomon is made king of Israel
- Solomon asks for wisdom
- The wisdom of Solomon; the dispute of two mothers
- Solomon builds a the Temple
- Solomon dedicates the Temple
- The Queen of Sheba
- Solomon's heart is turned
Memory:
- Psalm 23:1-3 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. (2) He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. (3) He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake
Phonics/Reading:
I have noticed a great improvement in his reading. We reached the end of a section in our handbook and instead of forging ahead, I decided to take a break and got back to review some. He finished his second A Beka reader, Tip Toes. We began working through book three of the Christian Liberty Press readers, A Time at Home.
Math:
- Shapes: square, triangle, trapezoid, circle, semicircle, rhombus, sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, cube, cone
- Rearranged shapes to make different shapes (i.e. two triangles together to make a square)
- A lot of fact drilling on addition, subtraction and multiplication. Multiplication facts of 1, 0, 2, 3, 5, and 10
- Three digit addition with carrying
- Three digit subtraction with borrowing
Literature:
- Pilgrim's Progress
- Vanity Fair, Hubbub in the Fair, In the Cage
- Trial of Faithful, Defense and Death
- Wind in the Willows
- ch 8 - Toad's Adventures
- ch 9 - Wayfarers All
- ch 10 - The Further Adventures of Toad (Cameron's narration)
- ch 11 - "Like Summer Tempests Came his Tears"
- ch 12 - The Return of Ulysses (Cameron's narration)
History:
- Little Duke
- ch 11b - Carloman dies and the little Duke grieves his death
- ch 12 - Duke Richard decides to go and ask for the release of the prisoner he is keeping, Lothaire. On his way to make his request he rescues a dog's life from a wolf. The dog he saves is exactly who he must petition.
- Conclusion: There was much war in Duke Richard's young life but then he knows peace. The one thing never resolved was his father's murderer. One day, a very old and decrepit man approaches the monastery that the Duke is visiting. The man is seeking sanctuary. It is the man that murdered his father all those years ago. The man was truly repentant and the Duke forgave him
- Our Island Story
- ch 45 - Edward III - Battle of Sluys (Cameron's narration)
- ch 46 - Edward III - Battle of Crecy (Cameron's narration)

- Children's History of the World

- ch 4 - The Ivory Bird Soars. Ezra carves the two tusks into a replica of the bird that saved the boat. He was a master at scrimshaw work. (I learned something new)
- ch 5 - Seabird Learns About Whales. This was a good review of whales that we learned about last year. (Our Lapbook)
- ch 6 - A Nantucket Sleighride. The whaling boat spots a whale. They harpooned the whale and now the whale is taking them for a ride.
- ch 7 - A Gallopin' Fishpole. The whalers are trying to reel in the whale. (Cameron's drawing)
- ch 8 - Fin Out. "Fin out" means the whale is dead. The whalers got their whale.
Nature:
- Pagoo
- ch 2 - Shifting Tides and Changing Hides. Pagoo is pushed and pulled by the tides. He keeps eating and molting.
- ch 3 - Pagoo is a Hermit Crab! As Pagoo molts, his tail becomes unusual. At first he feels important and then he feels exposed.
- ch 4 - At the Ringside. Pagoo is now on sandy floor of a tidal pool. Two enormous objects land near him. They are grown hermit crabs that are sparing with one another. There was a great size comparison. If Pagoo were the size of a 6-foot man, the other two hermit crabs were the size of a large barn, each. That made an impression on Cameron

- The Whale's dash through a few ice cakes gave the Boat Steerer the chance of a lifetime to show off before the whole ship. (Seabird ~ Holling)
- He sang this song very loud, with great unction and expression; and when he had done, he sang it over again. Then he heaved a deep sigh; a long, long, long sigh. (Wind in the Willows ~ Grahame)

Saturday, January 17, 2009 - Week 21
We are combining some things over the next few weeks as well as getting some things done on Saturdays to get us back on track where I want us to be. So this is really week 20 and 21, sort of.
Bible:
- The Philistines caput re the Ark and then return
- Saul is anointed as first King of Israel
- Saul and his son Jonathon
- Saul is disobedient and his kingly line is rejected
- David is anointed King
- David and Goliath
- David and Jonathon have a special bond
Memory:
- Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
- Reviewed all the books of the Bible
Phonics/Reading: Some days seem good and others seem are the exact opposite of good. I am planning on stopping where we are very soon and maybe going back to do a review of some type. I have also added him reading some simple books to maybe build his confidence and fluency. This week he read:
- Hop on Pop by Dr. Suess
- I Can Read with My Eyes Shut by Dr. Suess
- Go, Dog, Go by P.D. Eastman
- Inside, Outside, Upside Down by Stan and Jan Berenstien
Math:
- multiples of 3
- money: This is his favorite kind of math. He loves to separate each coin and count them.
- Believe it or not but he OFFERED to keep score for a game of Scrabble I was playing this past Sunday. He did a great job and the fact that he offered to do it blew me away. Real life math skills, right?
Literature:
- Pilgrim's Progress
- Talkative, Christian and Faithful
- Faithful and Talkative
- Evangelist Reunion
History Lit:
- Little Duke - chapter 11a. Carloman continues to become more and more ill but finds great solace in his lessons with Father Lucas
- Our Island Story
- chapter 42 - Edward I - The Hammer of the Scots
- chapter 43 - The Story of King Robert the Bruce and the Bohun
- chapter 44 - Edward II. - The Story of the Battle of Bannockburn (Cameron's Narration)
Geography Lit:
- Seabird
- chapter 2 - The Vision in the Snow. We meet Ezra, a young man on a whaling ship. He is sent to the crow's nest during a snowstorm and the gull helps him realize they are about to run into an iceberg. We looked up several web sites about icebergs.
- chapter 3 - Smart Traders. Ezra trades a jigging pump-drill, which we were both very interested in, for the ivory tusks of walrus.
Nature Lit:
- Pagoo - chapter 1 Pagoo Might be a Hermit Crab. Pagoo has just hatched and is very tiny. He is the size of a dot made by a pencil. We learned of other animals and plants that make up plankton. We checked out a few things under Cameron's new microscope. This helped a little on size comparison.
Poetry by Eugene Price
- Fairy and Child
- Child and Mother
- Ganderfeather's Gift
Free Reads: We are finally finished with The Five Little Pepper's and How They Grew. It wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't horrible. I really didn't care for the way the spoke. It was hard to get into its rhythm. We just began Five Children and It. It sounds very promising and might be one that I don't want to put down myself.
Copywork:
- Memory Verse
- What can wash away my sins? / What can make me whole again? / For my pardon this I see/ For my cleansing, this my plea. / Nothing but the blood of Jesus. (Nothing But the Blood of Jesus ~ Lowery)
- Waves churned all food into bits so small that the water itself became a sort of soup. Pagoo could lie in soup and eat it too, so he was happy. (Pagoo ~ Holling)
- Ezra knew that his 'Seabird' was niether a ghost nor bad omen. Yet this one, by flying off so oddly, had called his attention to the floating island of ice. (Seabird ~ Holling)
Artist: Friedrich's Moon Rising Over Sea I actually had Cameron look at this one all by himself while I was preparing a meal in the other room. He would then come and tell me what he could about the picture. It helped that I had not seen it because I asked him questions about it. I'm hoping this will help him "narrate" the picture back to me.
Composer: Liszt's Piano Sonata in B min. We haven't had one song yet that I couldn't find on YouTube.

Saturday, January 10, 2009 - Week 18 and 19
My weeks are a little blurred and mixed up as I am slightly behind. We will be taking a few Saturdays so that I can be back on track where I want to be. - Samson and Delilah
- Death of Samson
- Ruth and Naomi
- Ruth gleans in the fields
- Hannah desires a baby, the Lord hears her prayer

- God calls Samuel
Memory:

- chapter 10 - The King's two sons are sent to Richard as ransom for the King's release. Lothaire, the oldest is as horrid as ever. Carloman is scared out of his wits by what his mother had told them was going to happen to the boys, but Richard's kindness wins him over, again.

History:
- The Little Duke - first half chapter 9. The Normans go off to fight the Franks to defend their Duke, who is too young to fight.
- An Island Story - chapter 38 Henry III of Winchester - The Story of Simon de Montfort. Cameron was horrifically fascinated with the poor man that they put into prison and pulled a tooth a day until he gave the King what he wanted.

Not related to the animals that we studied this week but Cameron and I watched Fox and the Hound this week. There is a part in the movie when the hound, Copper is chasing the fox, Tod. Saturday, December 6, 2008 - Week 16
We jumped right back into the swing of things. The week off was great. Bible: We are catching up in our Bible study to where Cameron is in FBI (Faith Bible Investigators) AKA Junior Church. I'll be reading along and he will exclaim, "Hey I remember that one from FBI!" Memory: Phonics/Reading: I am so thankful that a friend passed on her A Beka readers. They go very well with our Handbook to Reading from A Beka. He is starting to actually get smoother and slightly faster. I know that sometimes I think he should be going faster and catching on quicker but it is definitely coming. He is also starting to read on his own: cartoons, books we own, signs on the road, etc. Math: Spelling: I decided that we should add spelling. I believe that the Charlotte Mason method doesn't have spelling but I just felt that it was something that our family needed. I'm still going to be fine tuning my method but as it stands right now, I have a list of 360 words for second graders (10 words for each week of school) We started at the beginning and I asked him to spell the words on the list. When we got to ten words that he missed I stopped and those were his words for the week. Right now, I don't think that I will have him do spelling tests on a paper. He can write them up on our dry erase board which is great fun for him. He only missed two words on his "test." I think I will just add those to next week's list until he has mastered those words. Literature: History Lit: Poetry by Eugene Field Copywork: Cameron has picked something up doing copywork. He has started hyphenating, on his own! I was quite surprised to see "again", "into" and "alter" hyphenated all correctly. It was not this way in what he was copying but he has seen it a few times and he told me that I explained it to him once. I don't remember this conversation but I'm glad he did. Spanish: We went over a LOT of new words: living room, bathroom, bedroom, closet, kitchen, dining room, basement, garage, stairs hallway, rug, wall, mirror, dresser, outside, inside, kitchen sink, tiolet, shower, television, radio, computer, bookshelf, washing machines, dryer, dishes silverwear, by (next to) some, clothes, bathroom sink, studying Mapwork: Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, Ghana, Mongolia, Philippines, India, England, France Hymn and Folk Nature Study: We continue to learn about trees this term. We read what Handbook of Nature had to say about trees in general. We were both interested in roots and when we went for our nature walk this week we were look specifically for roots. We found one GREAT specimen that showed us a lot of roots and what roots do. I plan on making it into another blog entry. And the best part, Cameron found it, was extremely excited about his find and was the first thing he told his Dad when they spoke on the phone.

- Temperatures in both Fahrenheit and Celsius
Literature:
- Wind in the Willows - chapter 3 "The Wild Wood" Mole gets it into his head to visit Badger. But, as he has never been in the wild woods himself, gets lost and very scared and Rat has to come and rescue him. They are caught in a snowstorm and end up staying with Badger anyway.
- Pilgrim's Progress - "Battle with Apollyon" GREAT narration from Cameron. On his own he made the connection that Apollyon was just like Satan. Apollyon was bringing up all of Christian old faults and tries to get him to return to his old place.
- Lamb's Shakespeare - "All's Well that Ends Well" Cameron actually followed the story fairly well. He was more interested in Helena making the King well than the whole relationship.
History Lit:
- An Island Story - chapter 36 "John Lackland - The Story of the Great Charter" We learned of all the evil things that King John did. But, he is also known for signing the Magna Charta.
- The Little Duke - first half of chapter 8. This is the first chapter that I have really wanted to keep going. Richard and his vassal guardian are escaping from the King of France. They made it outside the castle and that is where we stopped. (Mama might have to read ahead because she can't wait. LOL)
Church History:
- Trial and Triumph - chapter 11 "Alfred the Great Christian King" We found it interesting that Alfred used the 10 Commandments, parts of the law from the Old Testament, and parts of the New Testament to write his laws. Cameron liked the part where he fought with the Vikings.
Nature Lit:
- Burgess Animal Book - chapter 28 was about the coyote and timber wolf; chapter 29 was about the bob cat and lynx; chapter 30 was about the panther, jaguar, ocelot and eyra.
Poetry by Eugene Field:
- The Duel
- Good Children Street
- The Bottle Tree
- Lady Button Eyes
- The Ride to Bumpville
Copy Work:
- Memory Verse
- O Rock divine, O Refuge dear, / A shelter in the time of storm; / Be though our helper ever near, / A shelter in a time of storm. (A shelter in Time of Storm by Charlesworth and Sankey)
- With whoops and back slaps the order passed from man to man, "Tomorrow, we march on the invaders." (Trial and Triumph)
- Old Man Coyote believes absolutely in safety first, a very wise rule for everybody. Because of this he is very hard to trap (Burgess Animal Book)
- All this is true, and much more which thou hast left out; but the Prince whom I serve and honor is merciful, and ready to forgive. (Pilgrim's Progress)
Spanish: A very busy week in Spanish we learned many new words: to go, to come, I am going, he/she is going, they are going, we are going, to write, to buy, buying, to climb, climbing, to read, to eat, to listen to, listening to, to run, to travel, traveling, to play, to sit, to do, to fix, to sit, by, it, ladder, music, full/satisfied, tired, sick, newspaper
Map Work: Philippines, Mongolia, Spain, Belize, Scotland, England
Artist and Composer:
- "The Wanderer Above the Mists" by Friedrich. I really like this print. It has an almost lonely feeling.
- "Hungarian Rhapsodies" (we did number 2) by Liszt. What a FUN piece!!
Nature Study: This term we are studying trees. This week we went over all the different parts of trees. We used some printouts from Enchanted Learning. We will be studying different trees this term. We've already done some great study of leaves. Cameron on his own figured out what one of the trees at the library was. He took a leaf, found it in an identification book and now points out that it is a sweet gum tree, every time we pass it. He is already pretty good at identifying oaks and maples too.
Handicraft: Cameron has been doing some soap carving. He hasn't made anything in particular as of yet but he has REALLY enjoyed just carving the pieces to death. I figured that it was helping him to develop a feel for the knife and worked on different strokes. He sits there and carves while he listens to some of the readings.
He also revived a pocket knife from one of the boys at church and it is his new best friend. He is in LOVE with his pocket knife. It has pliers, bottle opener, two screw drivers

Saturday, November 15, 2008 - Week 14
Bible:
- The Lord leads Israel by a cloud and pillar of fire

- Moses disobeys God and strikes the rock a second time.
Memory:
- Joshua 24:15 ...but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
- Reviewed books of the Old Testament that we've learned so far.
Phonics/Reading: He quickly read through our first Christian Liberty reader It is Fun to Read. This was great for confidence building! He does seem to read better sentences rather than just groups of words.
Math:
- Whole, one-half, one-third
- Problem solving which involved 4 numbers and figuring out which combination equaled a fifth number
- Introduced and practiced carrying in adding.

History Lit:
- The Little Duke - chapter 7 Life is not good for the Little Duke when he gets to the home of King Louis. His oldest son is cruel and impossible to get along with and the Queen is not much better.
- And Island Story - chapter 34 "The Story of how Blondel Found the King" and 35 "John Lackland - the Story of Prince Arthur" It was great that Cameron remembered reading about Blondel in CHOW and was actually excited that he knew what was going to happen. Chapter 35 was very sad because we started reading more about the wicked King John. He murdered his very own nephew, who should have been king.
Nature Lit:
- Burgess Animal Book: chapter 27. We learned about different foxes: red fox, silver fox, black fox, gray fox, kit fox, desert fox and arctic fox.
Poetry by James Whitcombe Riley: Can I just say, "YUCK!" I'm not enjoying Riley at ALL. I think it is mostly because of the way it is written. There are many misspelled words to add flavor I guess. But it makes for incredibly hard reading. I think we will do all we can with our other poet before we come back to Riley. Here is portion of "Bumblebee"
An' ac' so slouchy an' all fagged out,
Danglin' their legs as they drone about
The hollyhawks 'at they can't climb in
'Ithout ist a-tumble-un out ag'in!
Wunst I watched one climb clean 'way
- When the Frost is on the Punkin

Saturday, November 8, 2008 - Week 13
We have begun our second term of school. This basically means a change in our nature focus, composer and artist. Plus we are a third of the way finished with our lessons. Bible: We did not have Bible this week. We did some review but not much. Memory: Phonics/Reading: Friday last week I was ready to go back to the beginning and review because it was such a BAD day for reading. He seemed to be confused by everything. It was very frustrating as I thought we were making great progress. I had every intention of reviewing after we finished one more page of long vowels. BUT Monday, and the rest of this week, was a complete 180 from last week. I jokingly asked him on Monday if he was feeling alright because he was suddenly reading phenomenally. His reply, "Well, I did have Smarties (candy) today." Me thinks that I need to buy stock in Smarties if that is truly the case. LOL This week he finished his very first book, Fun With Pets, which is an A Beka reader. He was so excited to get to the end of 100+ page book. I have some other readers that we used briefly last year. We are breezing through the first one and it is really building his confidence. Math: Literature: History Lit: Geography Lit: Tree in the Trail We really enjoyed this book. It was always a highlight of the week. Nature Lit: Poetry by Eugene Field: Copywork: Spanish: We learned about hair and "have" hair, bald, beard, moustache, short, long, straight, curly, brown/brunette, blond, gray, red head, has, to have, who Artist/Composer: Hymn/Folk:

Friday, October 31, 2008 - Week 12
Our first term is finished. It is so hard to believe that we already have 12 weeks under our belt and are 1/3 of the way finished with second grade.
Bible:
- The 10 commandments
- The golden calf
- Moses talks with God
- Building of the Tabernacle
Memory:
- Matthew 4:10 Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
- Added Daniel and Hosea to our OT list
Phonics: We have worked through all the long vowels. I think that we will go back and do another review, refresher. The long vowels were a little harder on us. He seems to let himself get frustrated easily. I think that we will work on reading actual stories from the book instead of just words. He does a little better with sentences than just groups of words.
Math:
- Number-fact families
- Adding 3 single digit numbers. Also looked for combinations of 10)
- Adding double digit numbers, no carrying
- Subtracting double digit numbers
- Adding triple digit numbers, no carrying
Literature:
- Understood Betsy - ch 11 "Understood Aunt Frances" in which Betsy gets a letter from Aunt Frances saying that she is coming to get her. Everyone at the farm is very sad. But the end is very satisfactory to everyone. We are now finished with this book. We both enjoyed this book very much even though it was about a little girl.
- Pilgrim's Progress - "Timorous and Mistrust" Timorous means timid. Two men, Timorous and Mistrust, heard that there were lions blocking the path and are running away. "Porter and Discretion" Christian comes upon the lions that are guarding a door to a beautiful palace and is thinking of turning back like Timorous and Mistrust, but the Porter of the door tells Christian something that he can't see; the lions are chained. They are there for testing of faith. Even though Christian is still fearful, he carefully advances to the door.
History Lit:
- Little Duke - ch 6 The little Duke is taken by the King of France to the King's place were he meets the queen and their two boys. It seems the little Dukes pride may very well get him into trouble.
- An Island Story - ch 32 "Henry Plantagenet - The Story of the Conquest of Ireland"
- Child's History of the World - ch 53 "A Great Adventure" We learned about the pilgrimages taken in the 10th and 11th centuries called Crusades.

Chapter 21 "Return to the Hill" the yoke returns to its hill after wintering in Independence. Chapter 22 "How the Wheels Rolled Westward" the wagons decide to note take the desert short-cut but to head to Bent's Fort. Did you know that oxen only sweat on their muzzles? I do now. Chapter 23 "At Bent's Fort" Bent knew that Jed, and the yoke, were on their way and spread the word. Many Indians came to see the "traveling piece of their old Medicine-Tree."
Nature Lit:
- Burgess Animal Book - ch 22, 23 and 24 In chapter 22 we read about the common skunk, hog-nosed skunk, and the little spotted skunk. (They are carnivores which means stinky, LOL) Chapter 23 was about the badger and wolverine. And in chapter 24 we read about the weasel. There are many different weasels and close relatives of weasels: ermine, New York weasel, long-tailed weasel, short-tailed weasel, least weasel and black-footed ferret.
Copywork:

- "My scouts have told me all about the yoke. And I've invited a hundred braves to see that traveling piece of their old Medicine-Tree." ~ Tree in the Trail by Holling
Spanish: This week, we are reviewing all of our previous lessons. We are going back and re-doing the lessons that we missed a question. I did all of the speaking exercises while I was at my mothers this week (we don't have a microphone in our computer) and though I thought I wasn't doing too bad, the natives think otherwise. LOL
Map work: Something new that I'm adding. Before, we had been hit or miss locating the places that we were reading about on our big world wall map. But no longer. We will be looking up every time there is a country mentioned or a region and even when cities are mentioned.
- Togo, Africa (missionary)
- Alberta, Canada (missionary)
- Philippines, Asia (missionary)
- Mexico, NA (missionary)
- England: London and Canter berry
- Spain, England, France and Germany and their distance from Jerusalem (the Crusades)

Hymn/Folk:
- We began work on our new songs. Our hymn is "A Shelter in the Time of Storm" by Vernon J. Charlesworth, music and adapted by Ira D. Sankey
- Our folk song is "De Camptown Races"
Nature Study: We were house sitting for my Uncle, who happens to live on a few acres of land and was perfect for letting Cameron loose and telling him to find what he could. He found quite a few interesting leaves and a bunch of different pinecones. We may study those more in depth next week.

- Pilgrim's Progress - "Salvation" Christian gets to the cross where his burdens are removed and tossed into the grave to be seen no more. Saturday, October 18, 2008 - Week 10
Bible: Memory: Phonics/Reading: We began working on long vowels. I think that we will need to maybe slow down a little. He's doing well but is easily getting frustrated when he can't get it, or complains of how hard it was. I will have to think on this to figure out what else we can do with this to slow it down and help build skill and confidence. Math: Literature: History Lit: We read a few things but didn't finish our readings because of an unexpected trip on Friday. Geography Lit: Nature Lit: Additional Reading: Copy work: Spanish: is on, are on, are at, are in, is in, I am, it is, it is not, where is, where are you, where are they, yes Artist/Composer: Nature Study: We took a very nice nature walk this week. Monday, October 13, 2008 - Our School Day
Stacie has asked how long our school day takes. I thought I would take a post to break it down.
We are following the Ambleside Online schedule for Year 2
Bible we do every day. It depends on the passage how long this takes. It has never taken us more than 20 minutes but usually it is around 10-15. I read from the Bible while he colors a picture that corresponds with the story. I got this pictures from Calvary Children's Chapel.
For memory we are using a modified Simply Charlote Mason method for memorizing. We also review at least weekly our address and phone number, days of the week, months of the year, and books of the New Testament which we learned last year.
We do this every day and it takes us about 10 minutes at the beginning of the week and less than 5 at the end of the week.
Phonics/Reading takes us 20 minutes every day.
Math takes us 20 minutes every day.
All of the literature we do looks like we read a lot and takes a lot of time but it really doesn't. We do not read every book each day but spread it out over the entire week. For example this week we read:
- Pilgrim's Progress is broken down into small sections. We usually break our chapter up into two days. We could easily read it in one day but I think Cameron does better with smaller portions. It takes us less than 10 minutes on 2 days.
- Little Duke is only a half chapter a week. If it is a longer reading I will break it up over a few days.
- An Island Story takes us about two days of 5-10 minutes
- Children's Hisotry of the World, which is not every week, only takes 5-10 minutes to read.
- Tree in the Trail has very short chapters. They are only one page long. We could almost sit down and read the entire book in 3 or 4 sittings. We read 2 chapters a week. They take less than 5 minutes each.
- Burgess Animal Book we read two chapters every week. This is one of Cameron's favorite classes. He colors a picture of the animal we are reading about from the book Peterson's Field Guide. Sometimes we do a chapter in one sitting and sometimes I will break the chapter up for two days so that it last longer for the week.
- Trial and Triumph we read every few weeks. I broke this chapter up over 3 days.
- We only take about 2 minutes on poetry every day.
- Additional reading is done at bedtimes and we read for 10-15 minutes.
There is narrations done for each of these except for additional reading. Narrations don't take very long at all and can be done while we are getting ready for the next thing.
Copy work takes 20 minutes every day. Some days he takes less than 20 minutes and he is always given that as free time.
Spanish is done every day on the computer and takes 10-20 minutes depending on the lesson.
Artist and Composer study doesn't take long at all. We will listen to our selection for the week 2-3 times and always during either math or copy work. I use little bits here and there to discuss the life of Bach. Our picture study takes about 5 minutes twice a week. We view our art selection for a few minutes and then he narrates it back to me.
Hymn and Folk song we do twice a week. It takes us about 10 minutes. We do end up singing our songs throughout the week at different times but actually sitting at the piano going over our songs.
Nature Study is done here and there through the week. He does it naturally as he plays outside. When we take time to do it right it only takes 5-15 minutes and sometimes we can take longer.
Handicraft only takes about 15 minutes a week.
All together, our day takes about 3-3.5 hours a day. Sometimes it might take a little longer if we are dealing with attitude adjustments (on both of our parts)
