Giving Our Children Opportunities to Serve

Hello Friends,

Wow, I've actually been able to post quite often lately (you can tell we've been on a little break from school, can't you?)  I've just prepared the newest chore list for our family.  As I get closer to little Samuel's arrival (still 4 months out, but my energy level is beginning to lower in the heat.)  As I slowly prepare for Nanny Jo's departure in December, I'm also transitioning towards taking back over the older children's education (far more prep time involved than for the younger ones' lessons.)  In any event, I thought I'd share our updated Blessing List to give you an idea of our goals.  Keep in mind that the children involved range in age from 7 1/2 to 14 1/2.

The Official August 2007 Blessing List

  First Things First

~Everyone make your own beds and get dressed.

~Brush your teeth after breakfast and make sure your hair is brushed.

~B.(14yrs.) and C.(10yrs.) are in charge of collecting laundry, sorting it and starting the first load                                                 of laundry.

~J.(12yrs.) and S.(7yrs.) are responsible for leaving the kitchen sparkling clean after breakfast    (unload dishwasher, re-load, put away food, clean table, sweep floor and wipe counters.)

 Mid-day Ministries

~Tidy your own spot after lunch.

~B. and C. have lunch duty: put away any food, load dishes, wipe table and counters and sweep the floor if necessary.

~J. and S., check with mom for a mid-day blessing you can help with.

 Dinner Anyone?

~Does Mom need help with dinner prep?  Feel free to askJ

~All hands on deck for post-dinner clean-up!  (Hopefully story time with Papa is available, otherwise, plug in some music and have at it!)

~Any clothes to put away?  Be sure your clean clothes are put in your drawers neatly.

~Brush your teeth and get yourself to bed (After you hug and kiss your mother and say your prayers, of course!)

                                                                                ***********

I've paired an older child to a younger child so that my older ones can teach my younger ones the ropes.  I've also (in one case, in particular) paired an "odd couple" (always at odds) to develop team work .

Feel free to comment and leave your thoughts and ideas. I'm always open to suggestions!

Love you all you blog friend,

Maggie

Jul. 30, 2007 - Blessings Chart

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I read through some of yours and was very encouraged by your blessings chart and all your family adventures. I never thought to call "chores" blessings but it really transforms how you view them. I think I will adopt the same name! Your family sounds precious and I really enjoyed reading about your life in Israel. I look forward to reading more. I also struggle to find the time (these days to even put the thoughts together much less sit down to type them). I made it my policy that if I have not given the Lord His time I may not read or write any blogs that day. Yes, I am struggling with even my daily time with the Lord right now. Rough season of life. It's refreshing to read others in similar situations. Blessings, Kathy C

It looks like a good list. My kids have their share of chores too. :)

Your list sounds simple and do-able. *MINE* has too many "things" on it. Thanks for sharing it (and thanks for visiting me!)

Wow, you've been a prolific blogger lately, girl! I had lots of catch up reading to do here at Seasons!
Great list. Our "blessing" (chore) chart is in need of revisiting and publicizing to the family again. The children have actually asked for it. They like having a system and the good feeling of being on the team. They also like the smiling mom who appreciates their contributions that lighten her load. I like how you paired "odd" couples. Very good idea. Thanks for sharing and encouraging through your words.
Comment on old blog post here: I thought your dream/nightmare of hosting the president and forgetting a dinner was funny, but aware how painfully present that subconscious fear must be. I would have it too! I used to dream as a teacher that it was exam week, and I was still feverishly copying exams at an uncooperative Xerox machine when it was time for the test to begin.
