To chore or not to chore

I know chores is more an american word - but  like it better than any of the English equivalents. I've been thinking about this recently I really think my children would benefit from having jobs to do around the house, but  I admit what puts me off is the enforcing of it -  I know it would be pointless to put a system in place and not stick to it cos that would just teach them the opposite of self discipline etc but I know especially being pregnant again  I really do need some help from them, I get so frustrated that I tidy up and it gets messed up again or I feel like I'm running round after them all and my dh is busy working day and evenings for the majority of the week so I don't get much help from him, it's a case of cooking tea, clearing up, vacuming (as we eat in the living room), washing up then getting them all ready for bed and doing the bedtime routine as well as tidying round the living room (again) so  I can relax in a relatively tidy room. The other problem is knowing what they are capable of, my dd (5) surprised me the other day, I allowed her to wash up for me - and she did a good job!!!! I was amazed and I think this is part of what's inspired me to think of starting a system. She also emptied the washing machine for me and helped me load the tumble dryer - she is great when she's in the mood. I don't want to force things too soon and make it all drudgery but I also don't want to miss this age and make chores become a big issue as they get older!  I'd start with getting them to tidy their bedroom but to be honest it really needs me doing it first to get it to a state that they can keep it in (it really is that bad) - oh for an easy way to parent and produce decent children lol :-)

Even the foster children in our house get some little chores to do! Our little nearly two year old already throws the nappy tied in the bag in the bin after being changed, gets the changing mat out from under his bed for changing time, puts it back under when we are done, has to help put away toys before we eat a meal and helps me empty the tumble dryer! Yes, we totally believe in child labor in this house! LOL!

Our lives haven't had much routine since moving but I'm definately adopting some kind of system for chores for September!! Good for you.Yes bedrooms!I found the easiest way was giving them a set of shelves each was the easiest way for them to keep tidy, cheap too.I got freestanding ones from Argos.
