• Mar. 27, 2008 - Potato Cannon
|
Hello. It's been awhile since I blogged but not much has happened. Oh, except for Christmas, Easter, and my BIRTHDAY! On January 25 I turned 14. I got parts to build a potato cannon. Yes, I said spud chucker. Here's how it works: It has 3 inch PVC pipe as the chamber, a 2 inch PVC pipe as the barrel, and a threaded end cap with a lantern sparker as the trigger. First you load the potato. Then, spray about 3-4 seconds worth of aerosol hairspray in the chamber and slap the end cap on. Then flick the sparker and Ka-BOOM! It can go 200 feet, probably more. At night, the whole barrel will light up and flames shoot out the end. Anyway, it packs a punch.
Gloria's first birthday is coming up on the 31st. We noticed that with Easter being so early this year, she actually had two Easter's before she's one year old. Until next Easter, she'll have had two birthdays.
Nothing really exciting has happened. Well except that the Giants whupped the Pats and sent them packing. Maybe whupped is too strong a word, maybe defeated would be better. Other than that, no extremely exciting things have happened. Oh well, summer's almost here. My favorite season.

• Dec. 21, 2007 - French Revolution
The other day my mom gave me a choice between putting a book report that I wrote on my blog or putting a report about the French Revolution. Since the French Revolution is more interesting That is what I decided to do. So here goes:
The French Revolution
The French Revolution started in 1789, claimed thousands of lives before it ended in 1799 with Napolean Bounaparte took control of France.
In the years leading up to 1789, the lower and middle class people became more and more ungappy with Louis XVI and the Nobles. Louis XIV had spent a lot of money on his own comfort and Louis XV lost the 7 years war. This made the country sink into debt and theking heavily taxed the lower and middle class people. Theis might not have been so bad if the Nobles were taxed but theyeither paid bothing or very little. At one time Loues XVI tried to make them pay taxes but they refused.
In America, when the Declaration of Independence was published, the people of France read it and became more interested in rebellion. Onceagain Loues XVI tried to make the Noblemen pay taxes. They said they would only pay taxes if all three estates met and voted on the matter. The first estate was the priests; the second was the Nobles; the third was the middle and lower class people. Unfortunatly, it did not go well. The higher estates were more priveleged than the third estate. Som of the higher people were convinced to vote for taxes but the other Nobles told the king to lock the third estate out. The third estate then promised not to leave until a new constitution was writen. The Revolution began.
Back in Paris, a mob gathered and marched toward the Bastille, an old prison, to capture the gunpowder that was there. They succeded and then in the following days, invaded the Nobles homes and murdered them. The king's family was put in a palace and guarded.
The people drew up a constitution, which the king agreed to. Other countries were not pleased with this treatmeant of the king. Prussia said if anyone hurt the king, they would attack to protect him.
This made the people angrier! They jumped to the conclusion that the king was telling other countries to attack. Ther people then dragged the king's family to a dungeon. People grew more angry after hearing Robespierre's speeches. On the 21st of January in 1793, they executed the king.
After thes, other countries grew worried that the revolution would spread and declared war on France. The French soldiers were victorious in some batles. The people formed a Commitee of Public Safety with Robespierre in charge. The first thing he did was put the people who rebelled to death. Theis was the Reign of Terror. Anyone who wasn't for the revolution was put to death. Thousands of people were sent to the guillotine, a beheading machine. Soon, the guillotine wasn't fast enough. Peole were lined up and the shot down with a cannon. Marie-Antionette was beheaded October 16, 1793.
The Reign of Terror lasted from April 1793 to July 1794. It ended with Robespierre, along with Danton and Marat, other leaders of the revolution, all dead.
A new form of government was formed but it was not stable. Problems contiued until Napoleon came and took control of the government.

• Dec. 7, 2007 - Snow and Shakespeare
It's been a few days since I last blogged. I havn't done much. Oh, I forgot. IT SNOWED THREE DAYS AGO!!! We went sledding all three days. We had our share of wrecks though. My brother bent the front of our runner sled after hitting a rock which we managed to fix. And then he also banged his knee on another rock. And then the time I fell off the taboggan. And then...let's just say there were others. No one was hurt bad. My biggest wish right now is that the snow will get icy this year. Icy snow is the most dangerous snow (One time my neighbor and I turned a cartwheel after we hit a bump) This poses a tough question. In the words of Shakespeare or someone like that. "To sled, or not to sled. That, is the question. To cartwheel through the air, or not to cartwheel through the air. That is the other question." |

• Nov. 27, 2007 - Catching up on my catching up entries
My, this is bad if I have to catch up with my catching up entries! Okay. School. We finished last years school and started again! I have about 70 days in so far. We started co-op a couple weeks ago and now we're on Thanksgiving/Christmas break. In case you don't know what that is, let me refresh your memory if you read other parts of my blog and forgot. A few weeks before it starts, a paper comes in the mail with classes that you can take. You choose your classes and then on the day that you go there, you get to do your classes. The classes that I pick were Art, Civics, and Orienteering. Oh, by the way, if you like to play Mad Scientist, my science book helped me figure out a way to do that. This is waht you do.
Ingredients:
-
purple cabbage
-
distilled water
-
vinegar
-
baking soda
-
saucepan
-
a small glass
-
measuring cup
First, you rinse out the saucepan, the small glass, and the measuring cup with distilled water. Second, put a few leaves of purple cabbage in the saucepan and put 2 cups of distilled water in it. Put it on the stove and boil it for a few minutes. After its done boiling, pour some into the small glass and add some vinegar until it turns from purple to pinkish red. Then get a teaspoon or two of baking soda and dump it in the vinegar/cabbage misture.
WARNING: Do this outside, as it is messy! Pretty cool, isn't it?
We also had a vacation back in September. We went to Niagara Falls. It is big. It is huge. It is Ginormous (pronounced JI-nor-mis).
Some pictures.

Horseshoe Falls

Horseshoe Falls at night.

American Falls.
We left about 5 in the morning, got there around lunch. We first went down and looked at the Falls and then we were going to go on the Maid-of-the-Mist (a boat that goes in the mist from them) but it was closed. The second day went on the African Safari. It had a drive through where you could watch African animals that wern't caged in from your car. We ended up staying at someone's house for the night and Sunday morning we left. On the way home we went to the Welland Canal. We watched the big 700 ft. ships going through lock thingies. One end would let the ship in and close. Then it would pump water in until it was at the next level and then let the ship out again. We got home at midnight.
Then in October came my long awaited Birthday present. It was actually closer to my 14th birthday than my 13th. My dad took me to a NASCAR race at Martinsville Speedway. Once again, we left about ive in the morning but we got there around 10:30. More pictures.

Me and my dad beside Jimmie Johnson's show car.

Jimmie Johnson won.
Finally we are up to date. How was everyone's Thanksgiving? We got off school Thanksgiving and Friday, and now, back to work. Anyway I should go. See ya! |

• Oct. 10, 2007 - I'm finally back after ignoring this for the whole summer!
Hello! I'm finally back after ignoring this for the whole summer and if you think I'm copying the title you're exactly right! Now, let's get down to business.
The first thing is Gloria (my baby sister, if you'll remember). She gained about 6 pounds and is the cutest thing on earth. She is eating solids (mainly carrots and prunes), is getting a tooth and absolutely has to have every piece of dirt on the floor.
This is Gloria then:

And now:

She grew a lot! This is also my other sister, Emily (looking rather goofy), and YES, that is a leaf in Gloria's mouth!
That's it for now because I have to go to bed.

• Apr. 16, 2007 - Gloria Faith
|
Hello! It's been awhile since I blogged because we havn't had any school. The reason we didn't have any school is because I got a new baby sister!!! Gloria Faith was born on March 31. Over two weeks ago. Today is the first day we are doing school since she was born. In the morning she was born, the midwife's helper got here and we went up to our neighbors house (they're also our cousins). Up there, we went fishing, and played a game and then, their mom (who is also going to have a baby in a few weeks) said that we could go down now. When we got down there, Mom made us guess what we thought it was. I guessed girl and I think most of my siblings did too. She was born at 2:17 in the afternoon but we didn't get to come down until four something. We did get to watch them weigh and measure her though. She screamed for a while after she was born. Apparently, she did not enjoy being born. After they weighed and measured her they wrapped her up tight and then she stopped crying. That night, I went to a friends house and Emily, Brady, Connor, and Justin went to my Grandma's house.

• Mar. 22, 2007 - Connor's sick
|
Oh boy. Connor got majorly sick two nights ago. My mom took him to our chiropractor. She might take him to the doctor today because during the night he could hardly breath. It has something to do with his lungs. The chiropractor said to watch it because it could turn into pneumonia. I hope he get's better soon because I want to go to the park this week.
It looks like it's really warm outside. I want to go out today.
I'm almost done with school and then I'm free for the rest of the day except for chores. My mom is going to a store called Country Pantry to get something for Connor.

• Mar. 21, 2007 - Why, Why, Why?
|
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Why does it have to snow the day after two days after seventy degree weather? Why, why, why, why, why? However, luckily, it is supposed to be getting warmer by the end of the week.
If it's going to snow, I want it to make my Mom have her baby. (She keeps saying there will be a blizzard right as she's having her baby.) Hopefully, she has it before the end of the week. Her due date is tomorrow but if you will read the entry below, you'll see why it probably won't be tomorrow. Connor got sick yesterday. I hope he feels better because we might not get to do what we might do this afternoon. I can't say because it is supposed to be a secret from the rest of them and they might read this. I'm going to going to go do my other school now. (This is part of my school.)

• Mar. 9, 2007 - Sick and tired of snow
| Good morning! I was down here by 6:45 and am almost done with school! I didn't have a lot in the first place so that helps. Two days ago I got a new cousin! Her name is Christiana Sue. My mom is due to have her baby less than two weeks from now. The fact that I was 9 days late, Emily 2, Brady 9, Connor 2, and Justin 11 days late does make me think that it will probably be three weeks. How does everyone like the snow? I hope it is gone as soon as possible because snow that isn't icy on top makes me bored less than a week after it's done. I get tired of winter real fast. Maybe I should move to Florida when I'm old enough. We went there a few times before. The one time for a week in April. We went swimming in the pool with the resort every single day. I should probably go do science now because my dad just brought it in. P.S. The entry right before this one may have the day screwed up because it's getting posted the same time this one is and I don't remember the exact day. |

• Feb. 20, 2007 - Sledding
|
Hello! We just got back from piano lessons. I had three songs: 2 from the mennonite hymnal (one of them #606) and another one from a another book. I enjoy songs that are jazz/rock and just plain jazz.
Today we a lot of stuff to do. We already did piano lessons, we have to finish school, clean our bedrooms, clean the upstairs bathroom and do laundry. Our mom makes us do our own laundry every Wednsday.
Sledding was awesome! I absolutly love it when it gets hard and slippy. The last couple days we had a sledding party. A family from church came over and our neighbors came too. It was so slippy you didn't need a sled! Cardboard would work really well too. They would go fast without getting dangerous. Plastic sleds were dangerous. Our neighbor went on a saucer sled and almost ran into the electric fence at the bottom. The electric fence is far away too. Two days ago we went out and went skiing! We probably could have went farther but if we didn't sit down we would have ran into an electric fence (this one was much closer.)

• Feb. 3, 2007 - Superbowl
|
I love Saturdays. There's no school, we normally have homemade pizza for supper and tommorow is the Super Bowl! I want the Bears to win. Every year we go to same person's house (I went to someone else's house last year) and tonight, me, my dad and Emily are going there to set up a projector. My dad is going to put an HD signal through it and project it out on a screen. It's neat. Every year we eat and eat and eat! I'm excited.
I just finished my last chore for the week. Yesterday we went sledding down in the pasture behind our house. It has a steep hil that is perfect for sledding. Sometimes, if you're in the right sled, (we have several) you'll hit a bounce and go in the air (the sled doesn't but you do!) I think toboggans are designed to spray snow in your face because that happened to whoever sat in front.

• Jan. 26, 2007 - Chickens
|
Hello! Yesterday, I turned 13 and got a brand new bike! I didn't get it yet because my Mom and Dad wanted me to pick it out.
We just got done feeding our rabbits. Their water was frozen (duh) and we took out warm water to put in their dishes so it doesn't freeze as fast. Emily came out to do the chickens' water. One of our hens hatched about 13 chicks earlier this month (don't ask me why) and now only 2 are left only they don't stay with their mother. My Dad put a heat lamp in the chicken shed for them and they finally decided to stay under it. Their mother doesn't want to stay under however, so she just leaves them there. We tried to give them water but they ran out into the ice and started drinking the water that spilled when we watered the other chickens. Brady was able to pick one up and all the mother did was puff up and growl (she's supposed to whip the tar out of whoever messes with her chicks.)

• Jan. 17, 2007 - A story entitled "Zippy's Story"
|
Once there was a cat named Zaplagrogbadash. Wait, that's not it. Zipplagogmadabber. I don't think that's it either. We'll call him Zippy. One day Zippy went into the forest when he tripped and fell into a pud muddle. When he came back up, he found a dog 3.52 times bigger than the biggest dog he had ever seen. I mean mud puddle. He immediatly decided to make friends with it. (Most people want to make friends with a 352 pound dog.) The dog didn't want to make friends and chased Zippy up a tree. Now Zippy was a big cat (as big as his name) and when he ran up the tree, the branch broke and he landed in the pud muddle again. He was amazingly still alive because the dog got knock on the head with the branch. I mean mud puddle. Now you can't blame the dog for what he did next because most people would do this if they got hit on the head with a branch. He pounced on Zippy. Now Zippy got out there real fast and headed for the hills only it wasn't the hills he headed for. It was very busy Interstate 78.3 .
Now hear comes the exciting part. They flew across the interstate, caused a 48 car pile-up, and then smashed through the front door of a store called "Chainsaws and Dynamite". They then crashed through the back door (got ya), and smooshed there way through barnyard behind the store. They jumped on an open tractor and caused the driver to crash into the propane beside the first store. Don't ask me why they built next to each other. Now when you crash a tractor into a propane store, there's gonna be sparks and if you have sparks in a propane store there's gonna be fire. Propane always catches on fire until you try to light the grill. Don't ask me why. All of a sudden fwooooosh x 1,892. That's how many propane tanks there were in the store. Then, they zoomed out the door only to find 48 mad car drivers, 2 mad store owners, a mad farmer and tractor shooting smoke rings, 10 police cars with 40 police men, 11 fire trucks, lots of animals running around, 1,891 propane tanks flying through the air and a banjo player. I don't know why the banjo player was there. Just as they were about to head for hills athough it was probably the city,
B O O M !
Unfortunately, that last propane tank found it's way into "Chainsaws and Dynamite". Suddenly, the air was filled with wood, fire, chainsaws and just about everything else. Both the dog and Zippy got blown way over to the forest. And they landed in, you guessed it, the pud muddle.
THE END
I mean mud puddle.

• Jan. 11, 2007 - Time to catch up
|
I'm finally back. How was everyone's Christmas? We went Christmas caroling with people at church, went to about six gatherings and went to the Pennsylvania Farm Show where Emily and two of my friends square danced and won blue ribbons.
Does anyone out there play the harmonica? I got one for Christmas. It's pretty neat.
Yesterday Co-op started. It stopped over Thanksgiving and Christmas. My classes are: Gym, Sign Language, and Health. My health class counts for half a credit. This school year we have to learn to type, which I'm doing right now. I only go about ten words per minute.
It's almost lunchtime and I need to do my laundry. See-ya without seeing you!

• Nov. 8, 2006 - Bike Crash
Hello. I didn't feel like blogging recently. Most of the time I didn't do much of anything because I had a bike crash and lacerated my liver. We were at a family retreat in the mountains. We got there in the evening, had a snack and went to bed. The next morning, I went down below and the kids were going back up to the hotel to arm wrestle. One of my friends stayed behind and asked if I wanted to race on our bikes. We were on the first lap when Justin and his friend came down and caused my friend to swerve (he was in front of me) and I came flying into him. I remember the handelbar getting pushed in to my stomach and crashing. I got a Grade III lacerated liver and he sustained minor injuries (skinned knee). I was in the hospital for 3-4 days. I couldn't much for 8 weeks. So anyway that was at the beginning of August. I haven't blogged since but since I'm blogging now I've blogged since. |

• Jul. 31, 2006 - Monday Menu IV
|
I don't like heat waves much. I like summer but heat waves like this I don't like. About a week ago Emily's rabbit died from the heat and on the really hot days I have to put mine out in the shade.
The most fun thing since I last posted was Choral Camp. I was away, Monday-Friday. It's a music camp but they have lots of other fun stuff too lik shaving cream battle and Capture-the-Flag. The week right after that was our church's VBS and the next week was the town fair! This weekend we go somewhere again! Quite a busy summer.
Now it is time for the one-and-only Monday Menu!
Since it's so hot tonight the menu is: Fruit salad, salad and smoothies.
Smoothies
frozen fruit of your choice
milk
honey to taste
grind your fruit in the blender, and milk until you have the consistency you want, sweeten with honey.
This is what my Mom would like to have but we aren't.
By the way if I don't have the Monday Menu on Monday, check on Tuesday or Wednsday becuase that's usually when I remember. |

Hello. Today we played outside and dug potatoes. For supper we had red potatoes. Speaking of vegetables, did anyone ever here of yellow green beans? I guess they aren't really green beans if there yellow but they're supposed to be the same as green beans. We grew some in our garden this year.
We also went to yard sales today. We got a bunch of clothes but I think the best thing was a brand-new game called Cranium. I love board games.
I hope my mom gets here soon so we can read abook called Little Britches. |

• Jun. 23, 2006 - Lunch Time! (I wish)
I'm hungry! Mom says we'll eat at 12 but I wish we could eat now. She's making a dress for the March to Destiny tomorrow. The March to Destiny is a whole bunch of Civil war re-enacters that get together and do a re-enactment of what life was like during the Civil war. It's in Shippensburg so if anyone lives near there they can come. It starts tomorrow, sometime in the morning.
I'm trying to write a song for the piano. I only have the first couple measures in.
I got back from Mississippi on Sunday. On the way home I slept about 5 hours. Did anybody know it starts to get light between 5:00 and 5:30 in the morning?
Maybe Mom will get my lunch now that she's finished. |

• Jun. 14, 2006 - Mississippi
Hello from Mississippi!! This week me and my Dad are down here in Mississippi to help rebuild damage from Hurricane Katrina. We are working on a house in Waveland, 1-2 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The damage here is really bad. I think the flood levels reached about 30 feet in our area. There's tons of junk just laying on ground.
Down here, the temperature is 80-90 degrees most of the time. That's very hot when at the job site the coolest place is in the shade. My Mom and brother's and sister went to an Ice Cream social and they had to wear jackets!
Tonight we had a Rook Tornament. At the job site, me and my friend made a trophy for the winner. It said: Mississippi
June 14, 2006
ROOK Champion:
A girl named Ashlyn won .We put her name on it. I'm surprised she won because another guy is really, really good at it. I think I'm done now. I want to go see what everyone else is doing .
By the way, does anyone else like Rook?
