Daily Perspectives of a Deaf Mom
Jul. 30, 2006
Back AGAIN! LOL This time for VERY real!
It seems......... "Back again" is all I say in these blogs. I'm actually chuckling as I type this. I was thus determined to stick with this last month and try to write on a more consistent basis but alas.... the demands of summer.
Summer and children = no vacation time for Mommy
Tmw is a big day for us all. According to Florida school schedule (which will be changed in the year 07-08) School officially starts tmw, July 31st. What does that mean?
This means....my oldest daughter Hannah (soon 8) will be in second grade and will be attending a public school because Hannah is my oldest from a previous relationship and her father disagrees with homeschooling. His family are very "pro education" and think homeschooling is absolutely wrong and they believe in common misconceptions such as the child being shut out from society. We homeschoolers know better.
I have been homeschooling Clarissa "unofficially" but tmw is her official day as a kindergartener. Tmw is also my first day as an official teacher. Tmw is also my son's unofficial day as a pre-schooler. :-)
Since this is the start of a school year, I should be taking this blog more seriously and be adding notes and thoughts about homeschooling throughout the year.
I will be starting Clarissa somewhat with the "unschooling" mentality. I have been reading about several teaching methods such as Montesorri, Charlotte Mason, Robinson Curriculum, as well as Unit Studies. I think because each child is so different in their own right, I think we should adapt and change our teaching styles along the way as we see fit. I don't believe we should stick firmly to one rigid schedule. A open guideline and a set list of goals should be a definite for the school year.
Hey I'm the kind of Mom that would buy a broken beat up pick up truck for $50 bucks and challenge my son Zachary to get it up and running with this set amount of $ per month (learn budgeting skills along the way) and so forth. Part of learning is interaction and I'm very big on that.
If I find some time tmw, I will write down some of my goals for the year that I listed down for my children.
For starters, my goal is to get to bed in the next 10 minutes. :-)
God Bless ~Julie Ann~

...as a friend!
I "studied" ASL when I was in college... I took two semesters of ASL. But, having not used it much, I'm not at all fluent. Thankfully, you can read my typing. :-) My dh and I use the sign for "I love you" with each other and with our girls daily. But, other than that, that's about all we say in ASL.
Thanks again for adding me as a friend!

I think you're off to a great start! Part of my problem with homeschooling has always been not be flexible enough over the years. I also tend to put things off if I don't have some sort of plan, so I have put together a routine check list so I don't forget the things that need to get done, but it's not on a time table. That's helped a lot.
In Him,
Amy

Hey Julie,
I just started a co-op last week. Two other moms offered to teach a class, sewing and computers. I ran with my passion of signing... although I'm teaching ASL to the kids (29 to be exact and 4 moms signed up for the class too), I really want to teach them to sign a Praise and Worship song.
I knew I wanted to know sign language in fourth grade, when I read my first book about Helen Keller! I had a friend who showed me how to worship the Lord with signs during Praise and Worship, took an ASL class at a community college, went to a deaf church to take a signing class from a deaf teacher, and later I changed my degree plan from being a nurse to being a special education teacher. I still want to become an interpreter, but in the meantime, I'm teaching others the gift of signing.
My son had a 10 yr. old friend who lived across the street for about 6 months; he was completely deaf and I watched and learned and shared the experience with my kids... They finally understood why I always tell them, "Knowledge is never wasted...you should learn all you can, be a life-long learner.... you never know when you might have the opportunity to use what you know."

Hi I am from New Zealand, my husband (hearing) and myself (HOH) are thinking about homeschooling our children in the future. My husband and I uses NZSL and oral. I am searching info on how deaf mom homeschool their hearing children and would like to know more and what books to read, etc. Are you happy for me to join in your blogg so that I can ask any questions regarding homeschooling, as I am still not 100% sure if this is what we want to do. Thanks. Karyn

Glad you are back! We are also getting ready to start school. We moved to a new state and the homeschool laws are a little different here. It sounds like you are off to a great start. We use the unit study approach with our deaf daughter. That seems to work for us.

Welcome back!
I am a hearing mom of eight hearing children, but I was an interpreter for 8 years before my eldest was born. I use English Sign Language, as I worked in the public school system. I taught myself sign language from a dictionary as I was growing up. I think I would have done well if home-schooled!
I look forward to reading of your experiences with your children!

I see another month has passed and you haven't been able to post. LOL. Oh well, you tried. That is just an example of life and how it changes all the time. What you are doing at home with your kids is so much more important than posting on a blog!
Now if I could just detach this computer from my fingers . . .
