Moments like these remind me of why we're doing this! In an effort to encourage one another to read the Word daily, a dear friend and I decided we would get together twice per month to discuss our Bible readings... Adalyn was so impressed by this that she read her Bible for the entire day and much of the week! She even got out 2 other Bibles and had me help her find the verses so she could compare the different "versions." Wow. I'm so thankful to have had the opportunity to teach her by my actions how important God's Word is to me! |

This is a question we asked ourselves before deciding to homeschool. This is a question many people ask us when they find out we have chosen to homeschool. I will ramble on this topic. We chose to homeschool for spiritual reasons only. I have written about some of these reasons here: We Homeschool Because. So, first of all....yes, I want my children to have "good social skills" but, I'm not choosing to homeschool because of social skills. Social skills have little to do with whether or not we homeschool because the other deciding factors were much more weighty. What are "social skills" anyway? And who determines if they are "good" or not? Do you take into consideration individual personalities? Some people like to talk...some people like to be alone...some people like to listen... I remember growing up as "weird." I was public schooled all my life. I was not like all the other kids. This was because of our morals and religious beliefs. I did not dress the same as everyone else. My shorts had to come to my knees. I did not wear a bathing suit in the presence of males. I did not watch the same movies or t.v. shows all my friends were talking about. I did not talk the same as everyone else. I was not allowed to go to some of the parties or dances attended by my friends. Sure, there were a few other "weird" ones like me, but mostly I was different. In fact, possibly some would have labeled me "lacking in social skills." I hope my children will be different from the world because of our morals and religious beliefs, too.! We should be different! "Set apart, sanctified!" The world should be able to look at Christians and think, "There's something different about them." We should be lights all the time, showing others what God is like! Public school is not like the "real world." In the real world, you do not spend your day with people the same age as yourself... In the real world, you interact with people of all different ages and you interact with your family. This week my children will spend time with, have conversations with, and play with children their own age, an 80 year old woman, children older and younger than them, adults at the grocery story, adults at the library, adults at a resteraunt, etc... My children will observe my behavior in the real world. My children will have opportunity to practice social skills in the real world. I think they are learning beautifully! I welcome your comments on this topic! |

That's what I told my 5 year old yesterday when I spilled a plate of mexican casserole on the kitchen floor!
She was very excited to hear me say that and she said, "Yeah, and sometimes it's hard being a kid, too!" whew! what a day we had... but, we at least finally got caught up to where i wanted to be in school. i think we're back on track! |

Today Adalyn said, "Momma, WHEN are we gonna have school again?!" Ha! :) I told her in January. She got a few chapter books from her sweet Uncle Bubbs for Christmas. The good classics: Polyanna, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women. They are all adapted. So, they're still big chapter books, but not as big and "hard" as the originals. She loooooves to read! She's been reading Polyanna since Christmas Day. We went out to eat today with my husband's family. Adalyn was being very quiet and when I looked over at her, there she is sitting by her cousin she adores and couldn't wait to see, READING. I had to make her put her book away. Eric and I have read a couple of chapters to her, but for the most part she's been reading independently. I've been asking her review questions and she seems to be understanding the basic story. I told her today that when she finished the book, I would let her watch the movie. When we got home from lunch, she disappeared for awhile...she came in my room a little while ago telling me the wonderful, happy ending! Guess we'll be watching Polyanna tonight and Adalyn can't wait to teach everyone how to play The Glad Game because "I know all about it!" "WHEN are we gonna have school again?!" Sweetheart, we've been having school and you didn't even know it! |

i've decided to start a new tradition with the girls. we have this white (bottlebrush?) tree that they get to decorate by themselves in the schoolroom every year. i usually do the top so it will look "nice." from now on they decorate it and i'm going to take a picture every year. it will show how much they've grown from year to year b/c they're standing by the tree and shows how far up they can reach to decorate. cute stuff. emma's really cheesing out!![]() |
