Educacation Show

I went to an event called the Education show with some fellow home schooling chums on Saturday. The place, NEC in Birmingham was huge and you feel like you are in a large airport terminal. We wandered round getting freebies thrust into our hands as often as we got odd looks when they read our badges. Home Educator at a school exhibition, talk about walking into the lions den.

Alot of the stuff was completely irrelevant to us but I managed to find some really good stuff that will help loads. The thing that struck me most is just how daunting it must be to teachers when they look at all the subject material and try and decide how to cover all they have to teach to 30 kids from such varied backgrounds with such varied needs. I was reminded again of how glad I am that we can home school our children and meet their individual needs in an environment that nutures and develops our fanily's Christian beliefs.

I just read an article from http://homeschoolblogger.com/MiddleEarthMom/88640/#c182814 I am surprised to see the fracas ongoing in England concerning homeschooling. I thought there was freedom of speech and religion in the UK, too. It's bizarre that all those people are trying to prevent an American homeschooling group from presenting seminars there, spreading misinformation the group sponsors child abuse techniques (i.e. spanking).
I hope that you can hold the seminars there.

One of these years I'd love to tour England and meet other homeschoolers there. I've always wanted to go there, as I have ancestors from Kent and South Ormsby and want to see if I can discover their gravesites.

Hi, I saw something on the education show and wondered if it was any good for home schoolers! I think I finally decided what "scheme" to follow to teach my children to read - I'm relaxed about it now I've made a decision (daft I know but...) I'm not in any rush - she just seems to be getting the idea of what letters are and the difference between A and B etc, so we just have fun at the moment and I know she'll learn - it is great to have encouragement from others who are already further on the road!

Wow, how exciting to be able to attend that event, yet how nerve wracking! I know what you mean about the whole 'lions den' thing. We have a couple who lives 2 doors down and they're both school teachers. When they found out we homeschooled they decided they didn't want to be friends with us. They felt that we were taking away their jobs. Oh puhleeze! We said nothing bad about the school system either (outloud anyway! hee hee). Go figure. Glad you were able to find some useful information though!!

Hi Deb,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I've seen your name popping up a few times too. I'm really glad we're getting some decent UK blogging going! I think it can only be a positive thing. I think we might have met once at the Nottingham club. I'm not sure. Anyway, we'll stay in touch and keep blogging!
