Following Him at Home

Jul. 25, 2008 - Now how about that?

Yesterday I checked the mail and received a package from Little-Lions again.  It wasn't a surprise as I was waiting for two remaining diaper covers that had been backordered.  What was a surprise was to open it and find a fitted diaper in addition to my two covers!  It was a nice surprise, lol.

I had been wondering about these because they are very affordable and I thought they would make great diaper bag dipes, or even overnight dipes.  But I wasn't sure because you can only tell so much from the picture and description.

Well, after holding one in my hand I think it's a great diaper.  It is soooo soft and cushy.  I have one leftover Motherease one-size diaper from previous babies, and this has more thickness than that diaper as a comparison, so I anticipate it being more absorbant.  My ME I never considered super absorbant for a heavy wetter.  It seems sized generous, so if you wanted them to fit your newborn you would totally need the newborn size.  Unless you wanted to do some creative folding and didn't mind the extra bulk.

And pricing is fantastic!  They have a special where you buy 2 you get one free.  That makes them $6 each.  Such a deal.  And if you want them a bit fancier they do have colored versions, but they aren't included in the sale.

My thoughts are that I think I will try to get some of these when I can afford it.  This paycheck it won't happen as we have a birthday coming.  Yay!  But next paycheck.....you never know

I have to say that my experience with Little-Lions this far has been excellent, and I highly reccomend them.

Jul. 24, 2008 - Letting go of what you want

Today has been one of those days.  You know the type.  The kind where you have something that you want really bad, but try as you might you cannot figure a way to get it.  So, you fret and fret and wonder how you will manage it.  In your mind you are convinced that what you WANT is what you NEED.  I'm sure that you have experienced those types of days....or maybe you haven't, lol.

Well, after spending the day contemplating how to get what I want or should I say what I think I need, something wonderful happened!  The Lord changed my heart so fast it was like flicking a light switch.  He just popped the thought into my head that nothing awful would happen if I didn't have that item.  It sounds silly but it was an INCREDIBLE revelation to my slow self that I didn't NEED it.  Boy do I feel rediculous now for fretting about something so silly.  And boy am I SO happy that the Lord spoke to my heart and freed me from the foolishness of my self.

Jul. 23, 2008 - Just cruising around and having fun...

Posted in This and That

Looking at cloth diaper sites, lol!  I was having so much fun looking at all the cute diapers.  You know the ones I'm talking about.  The adorable dipes that you won't buy because baby will grow out of it so quickly, lol.

Well, I just saw the CUTEST diaper ever for a tiny baby girl.  Here is a pic so you can ooh and ahh over it with me:

Now don't you agree that is the MOST cheerful diaper you have ever seen.  Makes you completely forget what you are using it for, lol!

Now, I won't be buying this little diaper gem, because as I said baby will grow out of it quickly.  And to spend money on something purely for it's cuteness is just not an option right now.  But it sure is fun to look

Jul. 15, 2008 - Little-Lions

I just wanted to share an update about my Little-Lions order.  I emailed them about the extra cover in my order and said that I am happy to pay for it.  They were very nice and said to keep it free of charge.  What a blessing!  Isn't God good???  Little-Lions is a great diaper store and if in the future you need some cloth diapering supplies I really reccomend them.

Jul. 14, 2008 - I recieved my diaper order!

I'm so excited!  Today I recieved my cloth diaper order from Little-Lions.  I ordered 3 dozen infant Indian unbleached prefolds, 3 snappis, 5 small Bummis Super Whisper Wraps in white, 2 small Bummis Super Brite's in white, and 6 microfleece liners.  Most of it came as a package together, I added a dozen prefolds and the two Super Brite's to my order.

I recieved my order within two weeks, which is really fast.  I had sent an email correcting my shipping address to them, but never recieved a response.  My order was shipped to my correct address though, so my email was recieved.  My 2 Super Brite's are being shipped separately, which I assume means that they were backordered at the time.  In my box I recieved one extra diaper cover of the type and size I ordered, so I need to contact them to pay for it.  I also recieved a free sample of their cloth wipes.  They are really nice quality.  I am really glad that I didn't see it before I bought my baby washcloths to use as wipes, or I would be wanting them, lol.  They are about $1 each unless you buy multiples then they are slightly cheaper.

All in all, I'm pleased with Little-Lions.  I'm sure that my other two covers will come soon, and that there won't be any problems in correcting the slight problem of the extra cover.  And honestly I'm glad they sent the extra because an extra is always a good thing.

This weekend, I ordered from Cotton Babies a Bum Genius One Size diaper and one One-Size Insert Sock.  As far as the diaper goes, I can only afford to buy one at a time, lol.  But if I buy one every two weeks then by the time baby comes I should have about half a dozen.  The Insert Sock I want to see dimensions and how it is designed.  If I can get my sewing machine to cooperate, I will try making my own, but right now it's not working right.  I recieved a shipping confirmation from Cotton Babies today so I know they shipped my order out.  That is just with the economy shipping there, so that is pretty fast I think.

It's just so exciting to see things coming together in preparation for this new member of our family!

Jul. 13, 2008 - How do you budget for Christmas?

With baby and Christmas coming within a month of each other and certain things for the home and baby needing to be purchased before baby.  I have been wondering how I can fit everything in.  You see, in my world each paycheck barely squeeks to make it to the next paycheck.  And any money that I "save" from one the other ends up getting eaten up by surprises.  For instance, my current surprises that will come out of this paycheck are a new light fixture for the living room, and a new faucet and pipes for my kitchen sink.  The light fixture was unfortunately shattered by some rough housing boys.  And mysteriously my faucet has broken and become unattached to the sink itself.  And at the same time that happened my pipes under the sink have all decided to leak.....big time.  So, my sweet husband gets to become an electrician and plumber.

So, that is why saving money at this time in  our life is such a challenge.  I keep trying, I really do.  Also before baby comes I need to repair or replace my dryer, it depends on how much the repair costs.  I don't want to be without a dryer in the winter with a new baby.  And of course the children have had the nerve to grow, so winter clothes need to be purchased.  And as far as my boys go, they can't be purchased at a thrift store because they are all odd sizes, sigh.   And three of my children will have birthdays before baby comes.  So I of course will want to get them each a gift, lol.

So, figuring out how many pay periods are left before Christmas and what still needs to be bought/repaired, I was really wondering how Christmas was going to happen at all.

I have come up with a solution I think.  Every two weeks when I go shopping from here until the end of November, I will buy a gift card from Walmart.  That is where I primarily buy my groceries currently (it's what's available).  I will hide these, (probably have my husband hide them, lest I decide to go on a baby shopping spree in a moment of weakness).  Then in December I will use these for my groceries, and I will use our actual cash for Christmas shopping.  That way I'm not limited to doing all my shopping for Christmas at Walmart, I will be able to shop wherever.

It may make more sense to get all of the Christmas prep done before baby comes, but sometimes children say they want one thing and then at the last minute they change their minds.  And so for that reason, I decided to do it in December.  Also, in late pregnancy shopping is more torture for me than enjoyment.  I would much rather be out shopping briefly when I can walk comfortably with baby.

So, for now this is my plan.

Jul. 11, 2008 - Yummy and easy grilled cheese sandwich

For a yummy and easy grilled cheese sandwich do this:

  • Take two slices of bread and butter one side of each slice.
  • Then take out a block of Colby-Jack cheese and slice off enough thin slices to fit between your slices evenly and make a gooey sandwich.  To do this use your hand cheese slicer, it's really easy and you get nice thin slices.
  • Next place one of your bread slices in a skillet butter side down with the heat turned up to medium.  Not too high or your bread will scorch and your cheese won't be melted.
  • Place your cheese onto your slice of bread.
  • *Key ingredient:  Sprinkle the cheese with garlic salt.
  • Place second slice of bread on top with butter side up.
  • Grill until each side is nicely browned and the cheese is melted.

Enjoy your yummy sandwich!

Jul. 10, 2008 - Crochet Basket for wipes

Posted in Crafts

I found this really neat pattern for a rectangular crochet basket.  The dimensions shown will be perfect to store my dry cloth baby wipes (a.k.a. baby washcloths) in when baby comes.  So, I am going to sort through my cotton crochet yarn and see if I have enough to make this.  If I don't have enough cotton yarn I'm going to try with regular yarn and see how it turns out.

I love to make crochet baskets, because they are super durable, and they can thrown in the washer.  Unlike traditional natural wood baskets, lol.

I'm using this pattern in case anyone else is game to make one.

For more crochet basket patterns look here.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Okay, I made one.  I didn't have enough cotton yarn for it.  So I used some acrylic yarn for it.  I think it came out really well and it holds my baby washcloths that are 9"x9" folded in half perfectly.

Here is the finished product:

Jul. 10, 2008 - Hanging laundry in the summer when pregnant

Since our dryer is still out of commission we are still hanging laundry.  Now this is by choice for the summer because I noticed that our electric bill was $40 less each month without the dryer.  Needing to use a swamp cooler in the summer I thought it would be better to not use the dryer too.  So far it's working nicely.  The only icky thing about it has been being pregnant in the heat.  And having fair skin I don't enjoy being in the sun anyway.  So a couple weeks ago, I bought an inexpensive shade canopy for $20 and I put it over my clothesline.    Now it is so much nicer to hang my laundry out.  It is about 10-15 degrees cooler under the canopy and I don't have to squint or have teary eyes because of the sun.  It's wonderful.

While it's true I'm not using the sun to bleach out stains, I'm also not having the sun fade our laundry.  And I do have a retractible clothesline for blankets and in the future to sun bleach my diapers

Now, I paid about $40 for my clothesline, I didn't buy it from Amazon, and $20 for the canopy.  So $60 for a less expensive way to dry our laundry for the summer.  And considering that we are saving a minimum of $40 a month and have been drying our clothes without the dryer for about 3 months already I think that we saving a fair amount of money.

So, if you are pregnant and hot and need to hang your laundry outside, I highly reccomend adding a shade canopy.

Jul. 9, 2008 - Homemade dishwasher detergent

Posted in Household

I ran out of dishwasher detergent so I mixed up a batch of homemade to try.  I'm hoping that it works well because it will save us money.  But if it doesn't it will only be for a week until payday when I do big shopping again.

Here is the recipe I used:

1 cup Borax

1-1/4 cup Washing Soda

1/2 cup salt (I used kosher, it's all I had)

1/2 cup Oxy-Clean

I made my own dry laundry detergent that works really well.  I only use a Tablespoon in each load yet my laundry gets nice and clean.  And if I have a particularly nasty load of laundry I do a prewash with a second Tbs of detergent and an extra rinse.  My clothes come out really well.

The recipe for that is:

1 cup Borax

1 cup Washing Soda

1 cup Zote-grated

1 cup Oxy-Clean

Mix it up and store it in a container.

Jul. 8, 2008 - We had the 20 week ultrasound!

Posted in This and That

And it's a GIRL!  So all this time when I have felt that it's a boy, I must have been wrong.  I'm still a little bewildered though.  The doctor says she is 90% sure.  And as I'm learning with this doctor, she doesn't give 100% so 90% is as close as I'm going to get, lol.

So, now to buy cute girlie clothes for her.  I did buy some pink infant gowns yesterday at Target, and two 6 month baby rompers at the thrift store.

Which brings me to my current dissappoint in our thrift stores in my area.  The times I have gone, which isn't all that often because it's a drive to get there, but when I have gone, there isn't a whole lot of great stuff.  Lots of worn out or broken things.  Some okay things, priced similarly to what I could buy it new on sale, and occassional good things for a good price.  I mean, worn out baby rompers and gowns for $3-$4 each?  What is up with that?  I can buy a package of two brand new ones for $8-$9, so why would I spend only slightly less to get worn out ones?  My daughter and I looked through every girl infant item they had to try to find good things.  But most just wasn't worth it, as you can tell by the fact that we only bought two.

It used to be that every time I went to a thrift store I found all kinds of great stuff.  Especially for infants/toddlers.  I mean there used to be good quality used baby gear, now you find only broken down stuff that is dangerous to use.  And clothes......all of my other children were dressed with thrift store clothing from infancy to the point where the clothes are just too worn.  You know the ages that happens, I'm sure.  But for this little one, I think most of her clothes will be new only because the quality isn't there any more at the thrift stores.  At least not on the days I can get there.

Well, I better get some chores done before my crew wakes up.  Have a wonderful day :)

Jul. 6, 2008 - I ordered some diapers!

Posted in This and That

I have been researching and researching cloth diapers.  I've had lots of fun looking at all the fancy diapers, and then coming back to reality when looking at my budget.  Which is not much.  I was able to do some creative financing, and I finally made a decision and ordered what will be the bulk of my diaper stash for the first 4-6 months.  Then I will need to upsize.

I ended up ordering:

A Momys friend blessed me with two nb prorap diaper covers so now I will have 9 covers to work with.  That will be my main diaper stash for this baby for the first months.  I will be trying to order 3-6 BumGenius One-Size diapers for night time diapering and for trips into town for the doctor etc.  For wipes I am buying the 4-pk of baby washcloths at Walmart that cost .97 each.  My goal is to have 4 dozen which should be enough to completely diaper this baby for the years needed.  I also would like a wet bag for the diaper bag, and a nice washable changing pad.  I'm rolling around ideas about making my own changing pad, but haven't settled on whether or not I will.

There are some extra things that I would love to have, but they are along the lines of a wish list.  Not the type of thing I am going to stress about getting.  Here would be my wish list:

  • Cotton Babies One-Size Inserts  I would like to have a dozen of these.  But at $2.99 each, that would be $30.  Not a high priority with Christmas coming just around the corner.
  • Diaper Sprayer   This would be so nice for cleaning those messy diapers.  But once again at $40 this is not a high priority.
  • Wipes warmer with replacement pillows  This is totally a luxury.  One I've never used before with my other 6 children, but one I've secretly always wanted to try, lol.

That is pretty much my cloth-diapering wish list.  Now if I was really dreaming big, I would order 36 BumGenius One-Size diapers to go from 8-35 pounds.  But ummmm, $600 is just out of my price range currently  But if I were to dream big, that is how I would do it.

Now, having ordered from Little-Lions and not heard a singe thing from them, even though I sent an e-mail, I'm a little concerned.  But when I get my order, I will let you all know what I think of the quality of the diapers and the quality of the service there.  The prices were excellent, I really shopped around comparing prices in shopping carts for what I wanted and they were the cheapest.  There is one other place to get cloth dipes cheaper.  But after looking at them, and seeing they were 2-3-2 I felt I would have to double them up and I didn't feel the durability was that good.  So I opted to spend a little more on what I bought.  And having used Dappi cloth diapers in the past, I knew they would wear faster.  But if your budget is stricter than mine this is a cheaper place to buy dipes.  The Dappi nylon pants are excellent!  The covers are awful.

So, I spent $114.70 so far on my diapers.  I will spend another $10 on wipes and another $50-$100 on BumGenius, but those will last for the remainder of my cloth diapering.  So I will have spent about $175-$225 on cloth diapers before baby is born.  Assuming I can come up with the money for the BumGenius diapers, lol.  I will need to spend more next year, but even if I end up spending $500 total for cloth diapering this baby, that is still far less than using disposable diapers for the duration of baby's diapering days.  So, I feel pretty good.  And cloth diapering is so rewarding to me.  I love not having to worry about how many diapers I have or if I need to run to the store.  It's freedom.

Baby hats I made.  I just improvised and guessed at the pattern and sizing:

Now that I have finished these I need to buy more yarn to start more as gifts because my fingers need to be busy.

I do still have some sewing to do for baby, but I haven't been in the sewing mood yet.  Hopefully soon.  Oh and I'm missing one of the fabric prints I bought for making my nursing covers.  My sons cleaned up our misc room and it's since dissappeared, lol.  So, I guess it's good I'm not in the mood yet, lol.

Jun. 27, 2008 - Doesn't it feel good

Posted in This and That

Doesn't it feel good to get the bills paid?  Over the past few months as I've been so sick, I limped along as far as the bills were concerned.  I didn't have the energy to think and because I wasn't cooking, I couldn't afford to pay everything because the grocery budget was way out of control.  It was miserable.

But today, I paid the bills before the children woke up and sorted through a couple months worth of mail.  I got to toss a lot which eased my stress of the unknown, lol.  Then I went through everything and paid everything up to date.  Well everything except my natural gas bill, I don't have a bill for that.  I'm hoping that's a good thing as I paid two months worth last month, lol.  So next month I have only one more payment to the hospital for my ER visit and that is all paid.

It is such a wonderful feeling to know that nothing is going to be shut off.  And doing what's right and being faithful in paying things as they are due feels so good.  Even if afterwards you wonder how you can survive on what's left in the bank  I will have to come up with 61 dollars for my doctor visit on the 7th of July to cover my payment and ultrasound copay.  But with my change jar and some checks I earned for taking surveys I think I can cover that, and buy groceries, lol.

And knowing that my Father in heaven is taking care of my family, I know I don't have to worry.  We will be abundantly provided for.

So, I'm feeling pretty good that my bills are paid and I'm finally caught up.  Whew, it was a long time coming, and I don't want to get behind again......ever.

Jun. 25, 2008 - Diapers, diapers, diapers

Posted in This and That

With my new little one coming, I have been considering diapers.  I haven't had to do diapers in a couple years now except for pull-ups at night.  And soon, I will be sewing some cloth bed-wetter pants, so I won't have to do those.

But in preparation I'm considering cloth or disposable for this baby.  For my others I used cloth, but I don't have any cloth diapers left.  So, that means either squeezing out money from my already stressed grocery budget for disposable diapers.  Or buying cloth diapers again.  And  buying cloth dipes again opens up a whole new world of decisions.

There are some really cool cloth diapers out now days.  Of course most of the super cool dipes are out of my price range, lol.  I would love a stash of BumGenius dipes....but, well.....if you have looked at the price you can understand why that probably won't happen.  So, I think I have settled on trying to squeeze out money for 3-6 BumGenius dipes, and then buying just pre-folds or flats and covers for the rest.  I'm leaning towards prefolds right now because there are some really great diaper packages out there that make ordering really simple for me.  As long as I can come up with the money, lol.

So, that means that I need to save dollars as well as cents.  I have been saving up my coins in a jar for a baby swing, and I'm up to $65 now.  I think that's pretty good.  I'm going to have to save a bit more than that though for the diapers.  I'm now considering if I really want/need a baby swing.  Maybe the money I have saved should go towards diapers.  I mean how long do you really use a swing anyway?  Only a few months.  I'm pretty sure I can find a used bouncy seat at a thrift store between now and baby's coming, and I think a bouncy seat with many siblings to amuse baby will work just as well as a swing.

Planning for baby on a shoestring is a bit challenging, but I honestly think more rewarding than just buying anything and everything you want for baby and not using half of it.  I would much rather really evaluate each purchase to ensure that it is something I will really use.

Well, I'm still groggy, so I'm going to catch a few winks before my sweeties awaken.

Jun. 24, 2008 - My method to dig out of the pit...

Posted in Household

The past months while I have been so ill with morning sickness my home has become a filthy mess.  I'm embarrassed and humbled by it.  To get things back together I have come up with a method that I will follow.  The reason I have chosen this method is because I'm a bit anemic and the iron isn't helping yet, I have very limited energy still and tire easily.  Plus, I don't know if you have ever looked into a room so messy that you were at a loss as to where to even start, but that is how several areas of my home are.  Sad to say, sigh.

So, I have a plan now that I can at least think clearly, lol.  I am going to take a spiral notebook and make a list of everything that needs to be done in one area for it to be clean.  Each part of the list will done with small doable jobs.  For instance, I won't put organize the bookcase.  Instead I will put organize two shelves on bookcase.  Small jobs that I can accomplish one or two of a day along with several loads of laundry, meals and daily lessons.  This way I will systematically be getting an area cleaned and organized while at the same time keeping up with my regular daily activities.  And I won't fail because I'm working with the amount of energy that I actually currently have.  Not my mental ideal.

I know it doesn't sound like much.  But this is only my third week of cooking meals again, and doing daily school with the children.   We took a break of about 4 weeks while I was so bad off.  Early summer vacation, lol.

If I was brave I would post before/after pics of my messy rooms.  But I'm not all that brave I guess, lol.

Jun. 15, 2008 - My list is coming along....

Well, my baby list is coming along really well.  I have a few small items to buy, and a few high ticket items to buy.  I am saving for the Ergo, but won't be able to buy one until about the time baby comes.  And I have a little over half the money saved in my coin jar for the baby swing.  The pack n play would be wonderful, but isn't a super high priority because we have a bassinet and crib etc.

It turns out I'm anemic, so that explains my complete and total exhaustion.  Last night I fell asleep at 7:30 and didn't wake up until 6 this morning.  Thank the Lord for an understanding husband.  I am supposed to be taking 325mg of ferrous sulfate in the morning and at night, but none of my local stores carry it.  So, tomorrow when I go to the doctor in the "big city" I will hunt for it.  Hopefully it makes me feel better.

On July 7th we get the unltrasound that lets us really take a good look at baby.  And hopefully we will find out if this little person is a boy or a girl.

I have been feeling some little movements every day that I am pretty sure are baby.  I figure that I'm feeling them earlier than I did with my others because I have been laying down a lot more because I'm tired so much.  I really enjoy knowing there is a little person growing inside me.

My emotions however are all over the place lately.  One minute I'm peaceful and happy and the next minute I'm wanting to cry because I feel like I'm the only one excited about baby.  Gotta love all those pregnancy hormones.

Well, it's Father's day today.  So, I need to rally my energy and get some breakfast made for my sweet husband.

Jun. 2, 2008 - Today will be fun

Posted in This and That

Today my oldest and my youngest need to go to the pediatrician to have check-ups.  And I need to get my bloodwork done.  We also need to make a Costco stop.  It will be fun, just the 3 of us.  We will also make some stops at a couple thrift stores and a stop at my sisters house.

Going shopping at a thrift store is always an adventure, lol.  I would like to find an Ergo baby carrier at a thrift store, but I know that is a loooooong shot.  My youngest wants a new teddy bear and who knows what my oldest wants, lol.

I hope that you have a wonderful day today doing whatever the Lord has you doing.

May. 30, 2008 - Baby blankets

Posted in Crafts

I am making blankets for the new baby.  I have two finished using this pattern and this yarn in the powder yellow sparkle color.  My blankets only have one row of edging around the outside edge though, not the three shown.  It took 1-1/2 to 2 skeins of yarn to make each one.  I'll post pictures of all my finished blankets once I finish all of them.

I am also working on this pattern right now, using this yarn in a baby print with pink, blue, yellow, green, white so it can be either gender.  It is coming out so soft and warm.  I think this one is my favorite right now.

Another blanket I'm working on is using this pattern and this yarn in a mint color.  It's actually really soft yarn considering how it's not pricey yarn.  I bought this yarn at Michaels using a 40% off coupon, so it was really a good price.  I enlarged this pattern, because I wanted a bigger blanket for baby.

And lastly I'm making a basic garter stitch blanket using this yarn, in yellow white and pastel green.  This one I'm using smaller knitting needles, so it is taking a really long time.  But, I will have it finished by the time baby comes, lol.

Now, hopefully I will have enough scraps leftover of each yarn to make one more blanket for baby.  And then baby should be set on blankets for a while anyway.
