FourJewels asked about the 1st grade graduation requirements. Basically these are the groundwork we want our children to have somewhere around age 7. To determine these goals, we thought through the skills we want the children to have on finishing ALL their schooling, and then worked backward, mentally, thinking through what the basics in each area should look like. The idea being that without an idea of where we are going, we are likely to wind up somewhere else.... so, we thought through where we want to go, and then outlined some benchmarks to show us we are steared in the direction we intend to go.
We don't really have specific requirements for each subsequent grade in the elementary years, nor do we plan to. Really, we more just progress to the next "step" in every area after mounting the previous step. These 'requirements' are just to help us ensure the foundation is laid to build ON.
One more disclaimer: This "scope and sequence" is just what we felt was important for a child in OUR family. Other families will have different areas of focus, and may have entire categories that I don't even touch on. For Keegan we may add a few "boy specific" life skills as well, but I've not gotten that worked out yet.
These aren't all done within one year. Some of them the child may be doing at three, some they may not master until age 7--or perhaps later. So I guess "first grade" is a long year in our school--form birth until we decide the requirements (which we can also change, by the way) are met.
Ok, deep breath, this is going to be one LONG blog entry!
