Studying an illustrator

The work of Johannah Bluedorn:

This week, In addition to our usual studies here at PrairieFrog Academy, we are studying the work of author and illustrator Johannah Bluedorn.  Her delightful books have been PrairieFrog favorites for several years.  One day while reading the bedtime story, I chanced to mention that the books were done by a homeschooled young lady who was only seventeen.  My girls' eyes lit up with wonder!  A real person--someone they could even relate to a little--lovingly painted the pictures and wrote the text!

The most recent issue of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine featured a wonderful interview with Johannah.   As soon as I saw it, I determined it would make a fitting introduction into discussing authors and illustrators.  We will look closer at the "behind the scenes" of writing, illustrating and publishing.  Between the Bluedorn's Trivium Persuit website, and Johannah's interview for TOS, we shall have a virtual tour of Miss Bluedorn's studio!

Today we snuggled on the couch to read one of our favorites, My Mommy, My Teacher. After reading it we went back through, enjoying each of the charming and detailed illustrations.  The children took turns pointing out the things they saw, and we discussed the definitions of "author" and "illustrator".

Earlier in our school day, while studying Bible, we had reflected on how Creation tells us some things about the Creator.  Kaira and Kendra shared how things they've made can give clues about themselves. In keeping with this theme, both girls shared what they can guess about Miss Bluedorn from her books and paintings.  They concluded that she loves animals, loves the outdoors, loves her family, looks closely at things, and doesn't wear shoes. (I assume the last observation was based on barefoot children in the pictures.)

Thanks for your comment. :-) My daughter's name is Faith. The Lord taught me a lot about faith through her birth. Blessings to you and your children. I love Johanna's work too.

I just wanted to let you know that Emily's Dad, Scott, left a comment that I've posted on my blog (as well as a prayer request for his wife). Crystal (Emily's Mom) also added a post to her blog tonight as well.

Thanks for keeping them in prayer,
Amy

Johanna Bluedorn makes the most beautiful paintings doesn't she? We love them too. My 6 year old loves the book My Mommy, My Teacher. She even remembered the time line on the wall when we read another book together, The Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick Hill, when the wonderful teacher in the book makes a timeline on the wall for the students in the small Alaskan school.

I haven't read all of my TOS mag yet, I go slow to make it last until the next issue! But I think I'll pull it out today and read that article. :)
Blessings,
Becky

How fascinating to see your children's minds working that way. Very observant and good thinking. How interesting to look at illustrations like that and come to those conclusions about the illustrator. I've never really thought to relate that with seeing creation as a reflection of our Creator. I like how those parrallel with each other. A wonderful idea and tool.
We enjoy our Johannah Bludeorn books very much, too! We love to read them aloud and her illustrations are so beautiful. My eldest (13) LOVES them (she loves to draw too).
Thank you for sharing. *Ü*

...inspired!

1.) Thank you for posting about Miss Bluedorn. This is the first that I've heard of her and her talents. (I've been searching for a (good) book about homeschooled children.)
2.) Thank you for posting your chalkboard contents. I'm in awe at your two older children's ability to learn a whole octave. I'm naive... what exactly do you mean when you say that they have "memorized a full octave on the staff"?
3.) Thank you for commenting on my blog about children and their "academics." Your words were (and are still) very encouraging to me... that I'm not doing this in vain.

God bless you richly, my dear friend!

Christian Homeschooling in a Classical Style

Dell...Can you explain this to me. Do you teach in this style? I am very curious to see if I should maybe get this book. Thanks so much for introducing me to Johanna's books...how awesome they seem! I have never heard of this before. I will be ordering some perhaps this week!
