Daybook: Monday November 16th, 2009

Outside my window…  the sun is low in the sky, casting a beautiful light over the snow-covered fields.

From the learning rooms… we are wrapping up a Tapestry unit this week and preparing for a week off as we enjoy Ken's vacation days!

I am thankful for…  Ken having two weeks home and my restored health!

From the kitchen….   a pan of water begins to boil on the stove--we'll have spaghetti for dinner

I am hearing... the washer and dryer running, pages turning as the girls read from the book baskets.

I am wearing … a white blouse and a windowpane denim jumper with a long 50's circle-style skirt.

I am reading… Goodness and Mercy by Esther Davison

I am creating… another flannel petticoat.  I think this winter is gonna be cold!

I am praying…  to be faithful in the small things, daily, hourly, and minute-by minute; for the big things are often just small things compounded.

Around the house…  I'm finished with fall cleaning except for a few light fixtures.  I hope to do those this week.

One of my favorite things… a cup of tea, a good book, a quiet evening and a gently glowing candle.  (Ok, that wasn't one thing, but I like them all together.)

A few plans for the rest of the week…  Ken's off this week and next.  This week is a family work-week, next week is play!

Daybook: Monday October 12th, 2009

Outside my window…
the sun has just barely set, leaving behind a wintry, twilight glow; with the snowy fields and sky above both a surreal blue in the fading light.

I am thinking…   that days like today are my favorite: simple pleasures and productivity snug at home.

From the learning rooms… the children are excited to be back to our Tapestry Studies.  (History/Literature)

I am thankful for…  children who are eager helpers.

From the kitchen….  a big pot of beef stock simmers on the stove, and we have plenty of leftover stew from tonight for our neighbor as well as another meal for us.

I am hearing... water running as Kaira cleans the kitchen from dinner,  Kieran humming "Joy to the World", and Ken sighing at the Rockies' score.

I am wearing … a brown corduroy skirt with a green sweatshirt with deer silkscreened on it.  (I always think of Psalm 42:1 when I wear it (As the deer panteth after the water...)

I am reading… What Lies Within by Karen Ball

I am hoping... that a recurring and somewhat debilitating itchy rash on my hands will go (and stay) away.

I am creating… um... nothing really this week; other than playing with the camera as usual.

I am praying…  for God's priorities to be mine; that I'd use my resources (energy, time, money) for His purposes each day, and each moment.  I tend to fall into praying that my plans will be His.  Instead, I'm trying to pray that His plans will be mine.

Around the house…  fall cleaning continues.  The master bedroom is done and I'm working on the study!

One of my favorite things… fresh raspberries (or blueberries, or strawberries or peaches) and cream.

A few plans for the rest of the week…  harp ensemble, piano lessons, school and fall cleaning.

Daybook: Monday October 5th , 2009

Outside my window…
A dark, cold, winter's night.  (It is technically early autumn, but brrr!  It's cold out there!)

I am thinking…   about the Literary Framework view of Genesis 1 and 2.  While I'm not seeing solidity to the view as a whole (although I'll confess I don't really comprehend all of it), it has some interesting points about the ways in which the Creation account points to God's covenant, to Christ, and to a precedent of lordship and dominion on earth.  Personally, I see those things as being in tandem with a more literal view than the Framework folk tend to take, but studying the Framework stuff is giving me a deeper appreciation for the poetry within the literal than I'd grasped before.  Big stuff for my small mind.

From the learning rooms…  school is back in session and we are enjoying the steady rhythm of reading and math and spelling and phonics.

I am thankful for…  home.  Snug, familiar, cozy, and to my eyes beautiful--cold weather makes me love the warmth of home and family on so many levels.

From the kitchen…. I hear the sound of the tea kettle just before it whistles; in a moment I'll make my evening tea.

I am hearing..
. the hum of the refrigerator, the click of my keyboard, and the tumble of clothes in the dryer; all are noises usually lost amid PrairieFrog bustle, but they whisper their rhythms assuringly in the evenings when the children are in bed.

I am wearing … a cozy, old fashioned, flannel nightgown

I am creating… plans to add a bit more school for Keegan and Kieran.

I am praying… to grow in joy.  It has always been the fruit of the spirit I've felt I understand (and manifest) least..

Around the house…  I'm half way through my two months of fall cleaning!  This week's focus is the master bedroom.

One of my favorite things… a new package of crayons.

A few plans for the rest of the week…  enjoying a nice week of normal (well, it's normal for us) routine

A picture thought to share… Just before returning to the prairie from our mountain retreat I saw the sun winking expressively at us from over the mountain.  I thought the lens flare might...well... have flair!

Daybook: Monday September 28, 2009

Outside my window…  Ken is edge trimming and weed whacking the yard--perhaps for the last time this season.  It is a gloriously beautiful autumn day!

I am thinking…   that life moves too fast and I move too slowly.

From the learning rooms…  we will be taking the week off for the most part!  Ken is off work this week and we are going to play!

I am thankful for…  bounty.  I'm blessed that what we consider a "tight" time financially means we need to cut back on what are really luxuries, and that our needs, and more are so well provided.  Bounty--what a lovely word, and so sad that sometimes my greedy heart takes that bounty for granted or feels entitled to even more.

From the kitchen…. I can still smell the blueberry muffins Ken made for breakfast. I just started a roast in the crock-pot for dinner.

I am hearing..
.
Kendra and Keegan are doing narrative-stream-of-consciousness singing.  Singing everything she thinks.  "I'm going to come over here, and do this, and that, and then I think I'll get a little water, and there is the mail man...."

I am wearing …  the same blue plaid jumper I have on in this blog's avatar--yes, it's nearly 5 years old, but still looks new.  (I need a new picture but tend to be on the other side of the camera most the time.)

I am hoping… to make a lot of memories and thoroughly delight in my family this week that Ken's on vacation!

I am creating… plans for a 10 year birthday party for our Kaira girl.

I am praying… for my great-grand children.  If the Lord tarries, I pray that He'll grant grace to my children, and their children's children to a thousand generations; that they may have a rich spiritual heritage and shine His light even as the world around us darkens.  Today I'm praying for God's grace and faithfulness to be a hedge of protection around my children; that they may serve the Lord all their days, marry Godly ladies and gentlemen and teach His precepts to their wee ones diligently.  May God show His grace to each generation, that my great-grand children (and the generations preceding and following) will know Him and walk in His ways.

Around the house…  I've finally cleared out the clothing bins from the great-seasonal clothing switch out!  The children's fall/winter wardrobes are now filling closets and dressers and the summer things are cleaned and packed away until balmier days.

One of my favorite things… girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes (I guess I'm having a "Sound of Music" moment?  Still, I'm hopeful that by  spring I'll have white dresses with blue satin sashes for a photo shoot of the three girls...  It is one of those silly dreams I have...

A few plans for the rest of the week…  enjoying my husband and children through our outings and stay-cation!

A picture thought to share… of a contemplative Keianna.

Daybook: Monday September 21, 2009

Outside my window…  a cold, cold drizzle!

I am thinking…  that I need to get our Tapestry week in full gear.  We got a slow start today.

From the learning rooms…  we are still in the throes of the War Between the States.

I am thankful for…  baseboards.  My laundry room now has baseboards!  Nothing fancy, but it is beautiful to see projects finished!

From the kitchen…. Kaira's cleaning up the dinner dishes.

I am hearing..
.
lively children enjoying a last burst of energy before bed.

I am wearing …  a brown tiered corduory skirt and a brown floral Lands End blouse.

I am reading… A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain (Once again, In keeping with our Tapestry studies this unit)  I'd read it years ago, but am enjoying revisiting it.

I am hoping… to make up a big batch of plum jam this week!

I am creating… fall jumpers for Kaira and Kendra.

I am praying… for marriages.  Ken and I were talking last night of how we've seen so many marriages struggle lately, attacked from within and without.    Yet, at the same time, we've blessed to see God's hand in so many marriages--young married couples with God honoring weddings, old couples (like us *laugh*) who God has blessed despite our own follies...  At any rate, this week I'm praying for all the marriages God brings to mind.

Around the house…  my deep cleaning project for the week is windows!

One of my favorite things…  sweaters.  I love to see Ken in a sweater.  The children are likewise just so huggable in sweaters!

A few plans for the rest of the week…  preparing for fall!

A picture thought to share… Kendra called me outside yesterday to see the makeshift playhouse they built  from fence boards.

Daybook: Monday September 7, 2009

Outside my window…  kind Mr. L has trimmed the trees in the dog run, and things are looking tidy.

I am thinking…  about the beauty of the book of John.  (Where our sermons have been for a few weeks now.)

From the learning rooms…  I'm printing our Tapestry sheets for a new week.

I am thankful for…  a weekend spent with my husband off work; precious family time of church family, Uno games and botanic garden visits.

From the kitchen…. Ken and Kendra are making muffins for breakfast.  My coffee pot is calling to me.

I am hearing..
.
Kaira playing harp; a fun, showy song called Purple Bamboo.

I am wearing …  a blue floral jumper.

I am reading… (In keeping with our Tapestry studies this unit) The Real Lincoln by Thomas DiLorenzo

I am hoping… to tend the garden a bit this week.

I am creating… a few new petticoats.

I am praying… for my nieces and nephews.  I have three fabulous nephews and two sweet nieces.  They all make me smile!

Around the house…  kitchen deep cleaning is done!  This week I attack the back bathroom and laundry room.

One of my favorite things… watching Bryn (our Cardigan Welsh Corgi) run.

A few plans for the rest of the week…  gearing up for another trip to Utah.  Keegan's casts come off next Monday!  (It won't be a whole family trip this time,, but just a quich jaunt.)

A picture thought to share… Kaira again.

Contemplative Kaira

Daybook: Monday August 31, 2009

Outside my window… "our" family of hawks are soaring, swooping and calling to each other.

I am thinking… about how to add more read-aloud time into our days.

From the learning rooms… Kendra is getting her work gathered for me to check.  The other children are working independently this morning--Kaira's grappling with writing a paper discussing, "Does the end justify the means?"  Keianna is reading about the underground railroad, and Keegan's waiting to read a little book about Mark Twain to me.

I am thankful for…  an almost re-finished laundry room and back bathroom, and a new dryer that isn't snagging and eating holes in our clothes!

From the kitchen…. rice is cooking in the oven and beans are simmering on the stove for lunch.

I am hearing..
.
little boys playing with leggos.

I am wearing …  a green tiered skirt (with some pinks and browns in the pattern) and a light-weight pink short-sleeved sweater.

I am hoping… to restart an exercise routine (T-Tapp) next week.  I got off track this summer with being sick so long.

I am creating… some photo collages and picture arrangements to decorate the bare hallway.

I am praying… for friends with loved ones deployed.

Around the house… I need to begin fall cleaning.  Where did the summer go?

One of my favorite things… hearing Kendra tell me about the books she's read.  Her narrations and memory for details are amazing.

A few plans for the rest of the week… to teach the children the basics of Chess and finish the kitchen deep cleaning that didn't get accomplished last week.

A picture thought to share… of my Kaira

Daybook: Monday August 24, 2009

I thought I'd try something new for Monday entries:

Outside my window… the wind is blowing the unmowed grass in the field behind us. It looks deceptively cool outside, but we are finally having summer heat–which has been slow to arrive this year.

I am thinking… that I need to start getting to bed at a decent hour.

From the learning rooms… children are deeply engrossed in their work. Kaira is contentedly sitting amid a sea of books and papers in the middle of her bedroom floor.

I am thankful for…  a wonderful church family. We’ve been so blessed; In the past ten years we’ve fellowshiped in three different churches. All three have shown us the true sense of church family.  Our present church is a delight in a world where so often it is “each to their own.”  What joy to be part of a fellowship that uplifts each other, praying together, rejoicing together and even struggling together!
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. John 13:35

From the kitchen…. the smell of guilt wafts. Ken asked me to plan a crock pot dinner as we’ll be doing an evening errand. I’ve not started it yet. I’d better hurry!

I am hearing..
.
Keegan humming Christmas carols. (Angels we Have Heard on High at the moment–why? I’ve no idea.)

I am wearing …  a jumper in modern bohemian conglomeration of prints.

I am hoping… to consciously delight in the children this week, and enjoy some play together.

I am creating… not exactly creating, but using a creative part of the mind perhaps. I’ve been working hard on some Asian songs for the harp ensemble. Although my parts are the simplest in the ensemble, they are challenging me.

I am praying…to live and breathe the beauty of 1 Corinthians 13,.

Around the house… I have several projects to wrap up.

One of my favorite things… my aerolatte coffee frother that my my mother gave me in my Christmas stocking years ago--Such a fabulous little gadget!

A few plans for the rest of the week… deep dleaning the kitchen.

A picture to share… I had to capture Keianna's intentense fascination....
 Intensity Unposed
