Chest-High to a Corgi

Snow this time of year, or even in mid-September. isn't unusual here, but typically only a dusting.

This unseasonal storm dumped enough to require getting out the shovel (and even the tractor), and came chest-high to Bryn.  Now, being that Bryn's a corgi (Welsh for dwarf-dog) that's not saying a lot, but to the children it was magical!

Chest-High!
Everyone enjoyed a romp in the winter wonderland:

Well, maybe not everyone enjoyed it equally:

And I watched them from the door, enjoying a cup of hot tea:

Daybook: Monday October 12th, 2009

Outside my window…
the sun has just barely set, leaving behind a wintry, twilight glow; with the snowy fields and sky above both a surreal blue in the fading light.

I am thinking…   that days like today are my favorite: simple pleasures and productivity snug at home.

From the learning rooms… the children are excited to be back to our Tapestry Studies.  (History/Literature)

I am thankful for…  children who are eager helpers.

From the kitchen….  a big pot of beef stock simmers on the stove, and we have plenty of leftover stew from tonight for our neighbor as well as another meal for us.

I am hearing... water running as Kaira cleans the kitchen from dinner,  Kieran humming "Joy to the World", and Ken sighing at the Rockies' score.

I am wearing … a brown corduroy skirt with a green sweatshirt with deer silkscreened on it.  (I always think of Psalm 42:1 when I wear it (As the deer panteth after the water...)

I am reading… What Lies Within by Karen Ball

I am hoping... that a recurring and somewhat debilitating itchy rash on my hands will go (and stay) away.

I am creating… um... nothing really this week; other than playing with the camera as usual.

I am praying…  for God's priorities to be mine; that I'd use my resources (energy, time, money) for His purposes each day, and each moment.  I tend to fall into praying that my plans will be His.  Instead, I'm trying to pray that His plans will be mine.

Around the house…  fall cleaning continues.  The master bedroom is done and I'm working on the study!

One of my favorite things… fresh raspberries (or blueberries, or strawberries or peaches) and cream.

A few plans for the rest of the week…  harp ensemble, piano lessons, school and fall cleaning.

A picture thought to share:

Frost on the Leaves

Poor, Poor Clifford

Clifford the big red van continues to be buried and Kermit (the little green tractor) is planning heroics, much to the children's chagrin. They love both Kermie and Clifford, but hate to see the pristine snow churned up. Unfortunately, it is a necessity if we plan to leave the driveway!

Ken was scheduled to work the weekend, but yesterday evening after dinner when we checked road conditions, the road between here and there was closed! He was frustrated, knowing that the money would be nice, but I'll confess it was nice having him home. (Although, I was thinking, "Must be nice... sleep all day and all night too!") Seriously, he deserves the rest, and amazingly he was able to sleep most the night, rising just early enough to make us all a yummy breakfast while I was just rolling out of bed.

This morning is school as usual (with a bonus of extra Daddy involvement!, then snow-play scheduled after lunch!

The Season's First Snow

Clifford the Big Red Van has spent the last few nights outside under the stars.  Ken's painting the barfice (barn-office), causing barfice contents to temporarily explode into the garage area, which in turn forces  poor Clifford out in the cold.

This morning, the following sight greated us!:

Snow on Clifford
Great excitement filled the house as the children woke to a wonderland of snow blanketing the fields behind us!  Something about the season's first snow thrills a child's heart.  (And mine too!)

Cabin Report: Fall 2009

We've been home several days now, but I'm only now getting a chance to post pictures from our get-away!  We had a lovely time, playing in the mountain meadow and climbing on the rocks:

swinging on the mountain swing:

following mountain paths:

and even dipping our toes in the river:

On one of the chillier days we went into a charming tourist town nearby to shop, enjoy delicious "homemade" ice cream, and watch the craftsmen.  The glass blower demonstrated and talked about his craft, and the pewter maker allowed the children to pour their own pewter ornaments into molds!  The four oldest have pewter humming birds they poured by their own hands.

Daybook: Monday October 5th , 2009

Outside my window…
A dark, cold, winter's night.  (It is technically early autumn, but brrr!  It's cold out there!)

I am thinking…   about the Literary Framework view of Genesis 1 and 2.  While I'm not seeing solidity to the view as a whole (although I'll confess I don't really comprehend all of it), it has some interesting points about the ways in which the Creation account points to God's covenant, to Christ, and to a precedent of lordship and dominion on earth.  Personally, I see those things as being in tandem with a more literal view than the Framework folk tend to take, but studying the Framework stuff is giving me a deeper appreciation for the poetry within the literal than I'd grasped before.  Big stuff for my small mind.

From the learning rooms…  school is back in session and we are enjoying the steady rhythm of reading and math and spelling and phonics.

I am thankful for…  home.  Snug, familiar, cozy, and to my eyes beautiful--cold weather makes me love the warmth of home and family on so many levels.

From the kitchen…. I hear the sound of the tea kettle just before it whistles; in a moment I'll make my evening tea.

I am hearing..
. the hum of the refrigerator, the click of my keyboard, and the tumble of clothes in the dryer; all are noises usually lost amid PrairieFrog bustle, but they whisper their rhythms assuringly in the evenings when the children are in bed.

I am wearing … a cozy, old fashioned, flannel nightgown

I am creating… plans to add a bit more school for Keegan and Kieran.

I am praying… to grow in joy.  It has always been the fruit of the spirit I've felt I understand (and manifest) least..

Around the house…  I'm half way through my two months of fall cleaning!  This week's focus is the master bedroom.

One of my favorite things… a new package of crayons.

A few plans for the rest of the week…  enjoying a nice week of normal (well, it's normal for us) routine

A picture thought to share… Just before returning to the prairie from our mountain retreat I saw the sun winking expressively at us from over the mountain.  I thought the lens flare might...well... have flair!

Mountain Jaunt

We escaped to the mountain cabin for change of scenery!  It was splendid, and we were just in time to see the aspen trees in their golden glory!

Tonight, I'm heading to bed early, but here's a quick snap of two of my favorite guys. (More from our adventures to come.)

Plum Jammin'

The beautiful little plums (the children thought they looked like giant blueberries) turned into the most gorgeous jam!  We ate many of the plums fresh, they were so delicious and sweet.  The local lady who gave them to me says her tree has many small shoots, and she'd be happy to dig one up in the spring for us to transplant!  Each child except Kieran has their own fruit tree; so far they are all apple and cherry.  Kieran's I hope will be plum.

I needed more jars, and Ken bought me the cutest little squatty ones!  I also was surprised that jam jars have silver-toned lids this year.  A fun novelty from the usual brassy gold.  (Although I'm sure if I was accustomed to the silver the gold would seem elegant as a change!)

I always use honey instead of sugar and each fall I'm thrilled with how well the Pamona's Pectin works to make such natural goodness!

I spiced the jam with cinnamon, and a tiny dash of nutmeg and allspice, and the children and Ken were delighted with it and I'm "plum pleased" myself.

Daybook: Monday September 28, 2009

Outside my window…  Ken is edge trimming and weed whacking the yard--perhaps for the last time this season.  It is a gloriously beautiful autumn day!

I am thinking…   that life moves too fast and I move too slowly.

From the learning rooms…  we will be taking the week off for the most part!  Ken is off work this week and we are going to play!

I am thankful for…  bounty.  I'm blessed that what we consider a "tight" time financially means we need to cut back on what are really luxuries, and that our needs, and more are so well provided.  Bounty--what a lovely word, and so sad that sometimes my greedy heart takes that bounty for granted or feels entitled to even more.

From the kitchen…. I can still smell the blueberry muffins Ken made for breakfast. I just started a roast in the crock-pot for dinner.

I am hearing..
.
Kendra and Keegan are doing narrative-stream-of-consciousness singing.  Singing everything she thinks.  "I'm going to come over here, and do this, and that, and then I think I'll get a little water, and there is the mail man...."

I am wearing …  the same blue plaid jumper I have on in this blog's avatar--yes, it's nearly 5 years old, but still looks new.  (I need a new picture but tend to be on the other side of the camera most the time.)

I am hoping… to make a lot of memories and thoroughly delight in my family this week that Ken's on vacation!

I am creating… plans for a 10 year birthday party for our Kaira girl.

I am praying… for my great-grand children.  If the Lord tarries, I pray that He'll grant grace to my children, and their children's children to a thousand generations; that they may have a rich spiritual heritage and shine His light even as the world around us darkens.  Today I'm praying for God's grace and faithfulness to be a hedge of protection around my children; that they may serve the Lord all their days, marry Godly ladies and gentlemen and teach His precepts to their wee ones diligently.  May God show His grace to each generation, that my great-grand children (and the generations preceding and following) will know Him and walk in His ways.

Around the house…  I've finally cleared out the clothing bins from the great-seasonal clothing switch out!  The children's fall/winter wardrobes are now filling closets and dressers and the summer things are cleaned and packed away until balmier days.

One of my favorite things… girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes (I guess I'm having a "Sound of Music" moment?  Still, I'm hopeful that by  spring I'll have white dresses with blue satin sashes for a photo shoot of the three girls...  It is one of those silly dreams I have...

A few plans for the rest of the week…  enjoying my husband and children through our outings and stay-cation!

A picture thought to share… of a contemplative Keianna.

A Mom by Any Other Name

Until a few weeks ago Kieran flatly refused to call me anything.  He'd come to me or point, and was full of loves and adoration, but didn't see a purpose in using a name.  Oddly, he rarely says his siblings names, but constantly says the names for friends at church and even the piano teacher's dog.

When I came back from Utah, Ken and Grandma both insisted he'd been talking about mommy while I was away. I was skeptical.  The word he'd been saying was "mama", which all my children used for "grandma" when first learning to talk.  I was always "mommie", never "mama."  I was certain that "mama" was grandma.  Sure enough, after Grandma left, often said "mama" and "bye bye" then make the sign for "drive" (indicating that she'd gone away).  To further cinch it, each time he'd sign grandma as well.

Just this last week he decided to christen me!  It seems about time, since he says, "Dadeee!" quite constantly.  Now in addition to "Dadee!" he has "Mommu."  Not "Mommy", but "Mommu."  (Or is it spelled "Mommoo?")

Why?  I've no idea,.  But, it is good to finally have a name, even an odd one that makes me feel a rather bovine. When he falls down, he comes running, calling for his "mommu".

Daybook: Monday September 21, 2009

Outside my window…  a cold, cold drizzle!

I am thinking…  that I need to get our Tapestry week in full gear.  We got a slow start today.

From the learning rooms…  we are still in the throes of the War Between the States.

I am thankful for…  baseboards.  My laundry room now has baseboards!  Nothing fancy, but it is beautiful to see projects finished!

From the kitchen…. Kaira's cleaning up the dinner dishes.

I am hearing..
.
lively children enjoying a last burst of energy before bed.

I am wearing …  a brown tiered corduory skirt and a brown floral Lands End blouse.

I am reading… A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain (Once again, In keeping with our Tapestry studies this unit)  I'd read it years ago, but am enjoying revisiting it.

I am hoping… to make up a big batch of plum jam this week!

I am creating… fall jumpers for Kaira and Kendra.

I am praying… for marriages.  Ken and I were talking last night of how we've seen so many marriages struggle lately, attacked from within and without.    Yet, at the same time, we've blessed to see God's hand in so many marriages--young married couples with God honoring weddings, old couples (like us *laugh*) who God has blessed despite our own follies...  At any rate, this week I'm praying for all the marriages God brings to mind.

Around the house…  my deep cleaning project for the week is windows!

One of my favorite things…  sweaters.  I love to see Ken in a sweater.  The children are likewise just so huggable in sweaters!

A few plans for the rest of the week…  preparing for fall!

A picture thought to share… Kendra called me outside yesterday to see the makeshift playhouse they built  from fence boards.

PrairieFrog Apothecary

For several years we've been making our own herbal tinctures and infusions.  He does the tinctures and I do the teas.  Today Ken, along with his lovely assistant Keianna made up five tinctures that were running low.

Below I share a rarely glimpsed area of PrairieFrog land (drumroll...)  Ken's barfice!   ("Barfice" is short for barn/office--a little room in the barn.)

Here's Ken and Keianna's five steps to a perfect tincture:

1. Get down the herbs from vast stores, high on the barfice shelves.

Getting Down The Herbs

Assemble Herbs
2. Add appropriate herbs to a quart jar for steeping

3. Put away herbs.

4. Add rum.  (This step isn't pictured because I have an alcohol free blog. )

5. Steep for about a month.   (Also not pictured because it would require time lapse photography and be rather dull.)
