And I quote...

My time is short (Are you surprised?), but I had a fun idea that I wanted to try.

Welcome to the First Occasional First-Line Fest. Rules are as follows:

Read each of the lines below, they are the first line from a book. Your job is to guess the book that the line starts!!!! I have tried for some that are hard, and some that are easy. If you don't know, guess!!!! The prize for the most correct will be bragging rights, and I will officially praise and laud your literary prowess in my next post....

Ready? Go!

1. "Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.

2. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…

3. Buttercup was raised on a small farm in the country of Florin. Her favorite past-times were riding her horse and tormenting the farm boy that worked there.

4. I am Sam
    I am Sam
    Sam I am

5. All children, except one, grow up.

6. Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.

7. There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.

8. It was an afternoon in late September. In the pleasant city of Stillwater, Mr. Popper, the house painter, was going home from work.

9. Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that.

10. Not long ago, there lived in London a young married couple of Dalmatian dogs named Pongo and Missis Pongo.

Here are some bonus quotes, they are a bit harder...

12. He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad.

13. A surging, seething, murmuring crowd of beings that are human only in name, for to the eye and ear they seem naught but savage creatures, animated by vile passions and by the lust of vengeance and of hate.

14. Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

And one last one, for good measure...

15. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Don't look at the comments of others, that would not be fair! Have fun! Maybe you now have a few more books to add to your reading list?

Later!

The reason there is no eleven is because that is a tribute to all of the great literary works that are yet to be written...

I wish... It is simply the product of a blog post written at 11pm, while talking to a bunch of people on gmail! Besides I am a college graduate, there is no reason for me to remember how to count.

Here are my uneducated guesses. By the time I get done with an entire book I have usually forgotten what the first sentence was...

1. Little Women
2. A Tale of Two Cities
3. Princess Bride
4. Green Eggs and Ham
5. ????
6. Emma
7. The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
8. Mr. Popper's Penguins
9. 101 Dalmations
10. ????
11. ????
12. ????
13. ????
14. ????
15. ???.... oops... I know this one... The Bible

Now I will go and compare my guesses to all of the other people who actually know where these lines come from.

Now that I have looked at others answers, I can see that I didn't do a good enough job to qualify for the bragging rights. Bummer.

Hey Kelsey from NM!! How's it going? I heard that one of our stops on our trip this month is going to be NM... You guys up for an invasion from the Hectors?

It'll be great to see all of you again!

Kelsey,

We could not bear the thought of driving within 150 miles or so of your house and not stopping by... Besides, the CD is only so good for so long, there comes this hankerin' for some live fiddling! Only one cure for that malady!

Is it not interesting how a line from a book can seem so familiar, but escape our memory? They tantalize the edges of our minds, but like a will o' the wisp, the are gone whenever we try to grasp hold...

If you haven't looked them up already, which you can, I'll post the names of the books next week.

I am, and will remain, a friend looking forward to our visit,

BFH

Kelsey...

I was debating on whether or not to bring it... I wasn't sure if I would have time to actually pull it out and play! Now that we are for sure swinging by, I think I will be able to find some nook of the RV to stash it in.

See ya later this month!

May. 6, 2008 - Regarding Your Comment:

Posted by Ebell1993
I am being very honest...I am not some fifty year old trying to be a youngster I really am 14 years old. My dad has a doctrinal degree in theology so us children in the family have to study a lot about the Bible and we have to read many theological books. Like this year, I did a study on angels, which was so cool, and dad gave me all these theological books to read for it. It was definitely worth it!!

As for the books, yes I have read them all, even Anna Karenina. My dad has a large collection of rare books so we read a lot. I also have a great BIG passion for reading. Like last month, I entered a contest and read 40 books in two weeks. That is no joke!! Now you know what I really love to do....read and blog!!

Thanks for stopping by Ben!!

Later, Miss Elizabeth
