May. 7, 2007 - Getting Back to Normal

Well, here I am again.  TeenPact was great!!
Thirty-seven 4-day students,
Twenty-four 1-day students, and
fifteen staffers for the week.
Most of us stayed at Camp Good News, so the learning and fellowship did not end when we left the capitol at the end of the work day.  If you haven't heard of TeenPact or sent any of your children to it yet, you seriously should consider it.  It will change your lives.  Not only theirs, but yours as well!  You'll wish you got involved earlier!

Going out on a limb, I bet to talk to KayinMaine, you might get a similar suggestion.  I saw her husband there during the 1-day class as we observed the class of 8-12 year olds!

Apr. 28, 2007 - New Template

Ok, I got tired of the old bookshelf thing.  If I had time I would use some of my kid's photos and try to figure out something original and different.  Then, however, I would need to relearn the html enough to make my way around and set up what I want.  I can'y do that now. It's hard enough to figure out how to make the avatar photo the right size to be accepted and appear.  That is a nightmare in itself, so for now, this must suffice.

And tomorrow we all depart for our TeenPact week.  I'll be bushed by next Saturday.  Still, it's a good tired.  Have a good week!

Apr. 25, 2007 - It's Parenting, not Homeschooling

How many times have I done this?  I change my curriculum every year or even mid-year.  "Things just weren't working with the old one."  "I needed to change so that I could make sure my student had the right type of learning opportunity for his learning style. "

I've come to a preliminary conclusion.  The problem all these years has not been my curriculum.  It's been my parenting.  The fact that they don't get their work done is all about the standards I make for them, and also the consistency with which I hold them to the standards.  I've failed miserably.

So, now, I embark on a new road.  Admit my mistake and now embrace correcting my bad parenting habits.  Give them fewer choices and clearer, unambiguous instructions.  They will have plenty of choices later.  They will have plenty of opportunity to use subjective reasoning on the pathways and roads they choose to follow.  For now, I need to make it a little easier for them to succeed.  The way to do that is to stand my ground and guide them with simple guidelines f or cooperation and compliance.

There, now, how do I do all this?  Hmm.....

Apr. 22, 2007 - It's Been Way to Long

While about 4 months have gone by since I've posted, not a lot of progress has taken place in my "homeschooling slump."  I even just returned from the ME homeschooling convention, and I'm not quite as encouraged as I'd hoped to be.

I guess my dilemma truly needs to be solved between me and God and not through carefully crafted speeches at a gathering of homeschoolers.  It was nice to see old friends and meet some new ones.  I picked up a couple books for my daughter, and even one for my teenage sons.  The title sort of slung itself at me and I had to buy it:  Created for Work: Practical Insights for Young Men, by Bob Schultz.  Have any of you read it? What did you think of it?

Look at me, writing questions to other homeschool bloggers as if I think anyone is even reading mine.  Silly me!

Jan. 15, 2007 - School Takes a Back Seat

While my husband is home on leave, I'm just not worrying to much about school.  At times they do some, at times they don't.  Dad will only be here a few more days, so we must make the most of it.  School is life....I need to keep remembering that and not get so trapped into the thinking of everyday culture.  I really need to find a balance, but this week is not the time to do it.  So, phew....take a deep breath and make the most of the week.  School work will be waiting after he leaves on Sunday.
