DS8 asking for more lecithin to help him remember.

I've forgotten to make DS8 Lecithin Muffins...this is crucial for ADD/etc.

FERDINAND DAY 4

Posted in Five in A Row Diary

3 R's

A - Right Brained Phonics/Dictation/Handwriting pages 61,66,67 (this is improvement, we usually only make it through one page of reading before he gets flustered!  -  Visual Tracking Difficulties.  This is so hard to remember there is no consistency in his learning struggles, and it shows from day to day...some days will be fine, and others he's writing words backwards right to left, or mixing up  p's and d's ....it's a day to day challenge.

Today I noticed he isn't consistent  with his O's.      I pulled out my manual and reviewed right/left brained dominance.  A -  is MIXED DOMINANT and supposedly wired to be right handed; but he is left handed.  My conclusion...was to have him write just "O's" on paper not in words...they all were consistent.  So, it's the pressure of the Dictation and handwriting that sometimes it's either way....?

that sometimes his o's were clockwise and some were counterclockwise.

I flipped back through his notebook and realized this inconsistency has been there, just didn't see it until today.

MIquon Math - both boys did different pages. E worked on number line addition/subraction  A - worked on greater than less than, he drew his little sharkies to eat the numbers. He loves Sharks!

Hoping to see our SIMPLY NUMBERS workbooks soon! Miquon just isn't the right fit for E.  He doesn't get those math rods, they almost seem to hinder him.

It's a KNEX day!  and lots of FALL weather, so outside to get those red noses and cold hands!

LINKS  Wallbuilders has a nice 16x20 FIRST THANKSGIVING Poster--on my wish list!

will add more to journal later today.

I would rather type than handwrite...so this keeps the journal going.

Not sure I like the whole BLOG idea.?  Still under test drive.

FERDINAND DAY 3

Posted in Five in A Row Diary

We usually don't start lessons until the babies nap around 10 am.

This morning we got a head start and got more done than usual.

FERDINAND  Day 3...

SCIENCE  studied cork, learned it comes from bark of the CORK OAK TREE.

Looked at links online showing photos of harvesting cork etc...

Boys played with corks and made a boat, reviewed Bouyancy. They both came up with completely different cork boats...one was alternating up and down and wrapped duct tape around it to make more like a raft, the other was a simple flag on a pin in a cork...both floated in water and had fun blowing around in the bowl of water.

Boys did an online color blind test...talked about why Matadors use red cloth and color blindness.

SOCIAL STUDIES  etc... we read a book called EL CHINO "The Chinese" story about a chinese man who had a dream of playing basketball and ended up becomine a matador. The story held the kids attention.

ART We made a  papercraft of a Matador off of the files in the FIAR yahoo site.  I did most of the cutting and was some too tedious for the boys...they seemed to like the project.

OUTDOORS  today the kids found a garter snake and a orangish fuzzy caterpillar the held in a jar for a couple hours before releasing.  I know I should have had them looking up what kind of caterpillar it was and noting in their nature journals, but we just went on a fuzzy cute caterpillar ...no scientific names kind of day.

Lots of outdoors today.

FAMILY Reading - Mousetales, Richard Scary books, I SPY with a magnifying glass!...we all have fun seeing who can find it first, ooh, I'll miss these young years that we get to read such fun books!

BFIAR  What a Wonderful Day to be a Cow!  light row, girls colored cow pictures.(I still need to get to www.homeschoolshare.com website and print the lesson plans!)

3 R's

waiting on our new Math curriculum by www.shoelacebooks.com

Dianne Craft Right Brained Phonics etc...we repatterened (mix of exercises and reading practice, A read an I SPY book)  we're seeing great progress in this routine!/Dictation  was very good today!  Worked on "ea" and blends.

E  -  Reading Made Easy/copywork/drawing  Lessons 19-21  the lessons are still very easy for him.

Yeah, Wed kids eat free at Pizza Hut!!  We did this through the summer; but it's been about a month since we've been.  Tonights the night.

Day 2 Ferdinand

Posted in Five in A Row Diary

I feel so relieved that the boys have taken a interest in Ferdinand.

Yesterday was a struggle since A thought it was a sissy story.  We had a little bump in our lessons yesterday with his attitude.  It could partially have been he wasn't "vitamined up"

He's on a non medicated vitamin plan by Dianne Craft. www.diannecraft.com

He takes a vitamin called 5HTP and it does miracles! Night and Day difference in behavior and outlook on life amd he knows it, he wants to take it because it makes him feel better.   I can't explain it scientifically; but it somehow replenishes or immitates Seratonin in the brain.  We purchase at our vitamin cottage by Nature's Way. We are so thankful God has made us aware of a natural alternative to "drugging" our children.

STORY OF FERDINAND  VOL 2 FIAR LESSONS

SCIENCE - focus today was on honey bees. We used our Botany book

by Jeannie Fulbright.  Lesson 4 on bees and pollination. www.homeschoolblogger.com/botany  The boys narrated and drew their own creations of orchids."SEASHELL orchids"   We taped toy bees to qtips and went outside to pollinate. (I wanted to use the real dried bees that Jeannie suggests; but we used what we had craft wooden bees)  We'll save that idea for future.  Learned bees live in Colonies and read another library book on the life cycle of bees.  Learned the word STIGMA and where it's located on the flowers./colored diagrams of bees and flowers from www.enchantedlearning.com

We gathered wildflower boquets (mostly COSMOS) and smelled the flowers while we read our story.

ART - SYMBOLISM in art, found Ferdinand in the cart facing backwards -not wanting to go to Madrid, picture in cart on way home he wanted to go home so he was facing forward next to driver.  BLACK TEMPERA PAINT and brush and HUMOR in art.  Looked at photos to see all the different ways the artist used Humor in this story.  Boys used black paint to write "FERDINAND" on their title page in their FIAR Scrapbook (This method is working great for us this year. 12x12 Spiral bound book Having all our info in one book instead of different file folder lapbooks. - tend to scatter around the house and never get looked at.)

Painting - E painted mommy a clay pot using her favorite colors while I was typing this in. :)  BOys love to paint they call it "LOOK and Paint" they just start painting objects ...worcestershire sauce bottle, any bottles in the fridge, oil lamps, flowers,  still objects...this keeps them busy for at least an hour at a time.  And they're getting some copywork in without knowing it which is good for my "dysgraphic" son.  I've carried this idea over into "copywork" using the paintbrush and watercolor or tempera paints. He is not to be doing any copywork for sixth months while repatterning right/left brained activities he does with Dianne Craft's routine. I have to admit it's very difficult to remember how straining copywork is for a dyslexic- dysgraphic child!

ON a positve note:  He has seen immense improvement on his daily therapy exercises, so it is working!!

Today we celebrated a week late due to our chaotic life lately...our son's first spiritual birthday.  I'll blog the details in my blessing journal.

I hope to get this blogging thing figured out to share photos...soon

Ferdinand Day 1 Oct 3, 2005

Posted in Five in A Row Diary

 Story of Ferdinand  day 1

Social Studies - We talked about the term Continent and learned where  Europe is located on map.  Looked at a map found some countries in Europe, and Atlantic Ocean

placed story disc on Spain.

DIscussed bullfighting:

BIBLE

God gave us dominion and control over the animals: train to help us (seeing eye dogs-we just saw a woman with a eye dog at the library yesterday!,

farming, as pets )

We are not to be unnecessarily cruel to animals (hunt/fish for a reason - food)

How would you change Bullfighting to make it more God - pleasing ?

Is it best for women to be bullfighters?

The boys had good answers and saw the cruelty in the stabbing process.  Neither thought women should be bullfighters (I was glad to hear that!)

Had to clarify there's no such thing as "BULL MILK" , A's question.

Compared Bull riding to Bull fighting since the boys had seen many rodeos and how fierce and strong the bulls were it gave them a good idea how crazy fighting bulls would be.

Language Arts/vocabulary - picadores, matador, banderillos

Read alouds misc - We're on a dragon theme, just finishing  My Father's Dragon.

Bill Peet's The Unsinkable Dragon, The Dragon with Two Heads.

Ogden Nash Custard the Cowardly Dragon.

Reference/books :  Portugal, Spain, spanish children, First 1000 words in Spanish

Before FIAR book -  What a Wonderful Day to be a Cow, sang Old MacDonald and counted farm animals.

A - likes I SPY BOOKS and SNAKE BOOKS

E - likes books on inventions, and how things work, electricity.

Quiet Time - we're focusing our narrations/drawings on our devotions: Leading Little Ones To God   *

3 R's  did not get completely through our lessons due to dentist appointments.

E - Reading Made Easy by Valerie Bendt.  It's a perfect fit for him.

A - RIght Brained Phonics by Dianne Craft.

J - is learning her abc's.

NO workbook MATH today.
