Did You Know?

• Jun. 1, 2009 - the Duppy Fly Trap Plantn doesn't actually eat insects?

On our recent trip to Jamaica we learned this about the Duppy Fly Trap:

Duppy Fly Trap is the local name of a plant (Aristolochia Grandiaflora) which is an insect-trapping flower. The plant does not eat the insect but use it as a means of propagation. The plant gives off an unpleasant odor which attracts flies and small insects. After being trapped inside the flower and fully covered with pollen grains, they are allowed to escape, so that when attracted into another “Duppy Fly Trap”, the powder is rubbed off and fertilization takes place.

• Jul. 24, 2008 - ...you can get free travel accomodations all over the world?

Yes, I said FREE accomodations...all over the world!  My family loves to travel and we have been to a lot of fun and unique places...from Tahiti to Africa to Turkey and many, many more.  In fact our homeschool adventure began in the Bahamas when my then Kindergardener was on Christmas break...long stroy, but that's where the Lord told me to homeschool my children.

Anyway, I first heard about free houses for vacation when my husband's family planned a trip to Washington DC a couple of years ago.  My sister in law told us about it, but it just didn't work out for us for that trip.  Well, she really took an interest in that concept and ventured out on her own.  She just launched her new Home Swap website and you really should to check it out... http://www.hsneighbor.com

I know the concept sounds a little strange at first, but read about the detail on her website...you really can travel all over the world and have a free place to stay...and it's only for homeschoolers.  Isn't that cool?

If you stop by there and register to be a host home or a home swap, please tell her I sent you.  We are married to brothers.  We used to all live on a farm together and then we moved to Texas...I miss her.

Happy traveling.

• Aug. 7, 2007 - Snakes have legs? By: SwimBug

We were studying about reptiles today and doing an experiment with a growing alligator toy.  We were reading about different reptiles and their characteristics.  Most of them have 4 legs right?  What about snakes?  Well...I believe they also have legs.  Look at Genesis 3.  After Adam and Eve ate the fruit, God cursed the serpent..."you will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life."   So if to crawl on his belly was part of the curse, then before the serpent was cursed he must have used legs.  We first learned of this through a yahoo group... SequoiaMinistry@yahoogroups.com.  This is a great group that my mom is on with lots of information on science and the Bible from Ranger Bruce... http://www.sequoiaministry.samsbiz.com/   He even has pictures of a snake with little spurs on the underside.  Ranger Bruce also says that the word serpent in Hebrew means upright shining creature.  How cool is that?  Wonder what the serpent looked like?  Do you know?
