Homeschooling Only One
Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - Blog for Relief (Kristina) - Tomorrow!
Bloggers Unite for Flood Aid for Katrina victims Tomorrow, September 1st: day of blogging focused on raising awareness of and funds for relief efforts to aid those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Glenn Rennolds posted at 2:42 pm today on http://www.instapundit.com/:
But mainstream Web sites that had jumped to pull in money for the tsunami victims showed no evidence of repeating it here in the U.S. for Katrina's. Amazon.com, which raised more than $14 million for the American Red Cross in January via a donation link on its home page, didn't have one as of mid-day Monday. Nor did Google, Yahoo, MSN, or eBay, all of which hustled earlier in the year to put up donation links on their portals. (Google slapped up an "Information about Hurricane Katrina" link on its Spartan home page, but that led to news sources and stories.)
An Amazon spokesperson said that the online retailer had no plans to post a donation link on its site. "Each case is different," she said. "The Red Cross has essentially given over its entire site to donations. The tsunami came out of the blue, so it was an 'all hands on deck' situation, but the Red Cross has been getting ready for this and getting its message out there for several days."
I don't know his sources, but that is very sad... no one knows how bad Kristina would be, and it is becoming more and more evident that her sweep into the gulf-coast states is devestating...
Hugh Hewitt came up with a grand idea and I'm just wanting to spread the news...
Glenn's roundup post
I'm offering Life Today as a charity to donate to, but there are a whole slew of charities out there. You can find them at the bottom of the page of the link at the beginning of my post here.
I also want to make it known about Project Noah.Another great charity to give to.
To: Good Afternoon Friends, In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many of you are rushing to send help to our friends in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The recovery and cleanup will be a very long process and there are things that will be needed in the future, but not immediately. This is why I am writing to you today. Project Noah is a homeschooling ministry that helps homeschooling families in crisis. We only provide curriculum and school supplies to the families that come to us with crisis needs - whether it is because their home has burned, or been flooded, or the primary wage earner has been without work for an extended period of time, or other similar crisis, we try to help. We have been serving the homeschooling community for almost 5 years now and will continue as long as there are families in need. Although some of you that receive this letter do not homeschool, you can still help. There will be a great need for school supplies, even the workbooks that you see at Sam's Club and WalMart will help. The majority of homeschooling families in these states operate through their local churches. The churches as well as the families have lost much, including school books and school supplies. Having worked in the arena of these types of crisis for a number of years, I can tell you that these things are not on their minds right now. BUT...when they begin to think about these things, Project Noah wants to be able to have those things ready for them. Books, calculators, rulers, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, teaching tapes, textbooks - all the things that we use throughout the course of our homeschooling year - these will be needed. Even lunchboxes, crayons, markers, and on and on and on. If you would like to help us help them in this unique nitch of need, we would be honored. To send us your donations please ship to the following location: PROJECT NOAH 15807 Brickman Ct. Houston, TX 77084 our fax number is 281-225-4562 Please spread the word! Your Servant, Lisa Guidry Director
Lisa started this in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Allison. When that hit Houston, there was lots of flooding (even I-10 was under water) and there were quite a few homeschoolers who lost curriculum. Since that time, they have helped others who have lost things in fires, gone through tough times.
It's a Christian organization but they help all homeschoolers. They have taken some heat for helping "nonbelievers" but their goal is to help homeschoolers in time of crisis, not grill them about the right type of homeschooler.
Consider what you can do now! Blog tomorrow to spread the word and make sure we as Christians are both on our knees and digging into our pockets (in whatever way we can).
They will know us by our love.... Let that be our Watchword....
