hazards of street walking in Accra

I love going out for a nice long walk and it is my exercise of choice. I love having some time alone and often have my quiet time on the road. I love being able to think about my day and what needs to be done or planning some zany excursion or event. I love looking at nature in the landscapes, flowers and gardens. I love hearing and seeing the birds. I love taking in all the scenes before me. Since our car is not here yet we are also walking to actually get to and from specific destinations as well.

I am experiencing a number of  "will make a great story later" things that make me smile, so I wanted to share them with you…

As I am walking along there are not many sidewalks, so one does need to be aware of the traffic zooming past. (The taxis and tro-tros are an  entry all thier own!)

Nothing surprises me more than a small herd of goats suddenly running in my path.

There are a number of African wild dogs running the streets of Accra. Luckily, as long as Coco is not walking with me they tend to not even notice. (Coco doesn’t get out often!)

The streets of Accra are lined with open sewers which are these very deep gutters. At times the scents wafting up can be a little overwhelming. (and it made me laugh today to see this open hole with a piece of red fabric tied on a stick to warn drivers to stay over- just like Tash)

In some spots the sewers are covered-

but one must be even more diligent when strolling along these paths as it is not uncommon for a large gaping hole to suddenly open before you.

I'm sure I wil have more to add later on. For now, I hope you enjoyed the glimpse of street walking in Accra.

In many ways it is like stepping back in time isn't it?
