Lupton's Loving Life
Jul. 6, 2009

Bright and early this morning I headed up to the orphanage to do a little work.

I arrived early enough to catch the little ones at bath time. (the babies were so cute as they were getting their scrub down... but breaks your heart doesn't it?)

I spent a lot of time this weekend coming up with ways to show what the hand motions mean. He doesn't have ANY "words" that he knows or communicates with... It's going to be tough.  I sure hope my ideas will work!

All weekend I was trying to get back in the habit of signing things as I say them… well, not EVERYTHING that I say.. goodness knows I’d have to have bionic hands to keep up with that. (grin) I am also rearranging my words in ways that I am able to sign, simpler sentences to go along with my vocabulary.

This morning we went all around the orphanage on a photo hunt. I took pictures of everything I could think of. I am going to print off all the pictures and make him a book with common words from his everyday life.  That way he can sit on my lap and we can go over the signs for those words.

I am also going to print and laminate a second set of pictures so we can use those to be sure he understands. I plan on placing the pictures on the table and telling him , “ I want the ___” and he can find the picture and give it to me or “ where is the ___” and he can point to it “give ____ to your sister.” “Put the cup under the plate” or whatever. You get the idea... I think this will be the easiest way to get us started.

He was so cute this morning! With the help of the trampoline he learned the signs for jump, stop and sit in no time at all. He was not too thrilled when some of the other little ones tagged along during our session, I think he is going to really enjoy one on one time. Ü

I’ll be working with him three mornings per week. I sure hope I don’t lose my heart!

On Friday I will go in and do a lesson with all the kids in class. I think I’ll take along some small treats to bribe them all to learn the signs. Just cause I like to bribe kids. Ü AND because it never fails to amaze me how much more attentive, alert and receptive any kid is to any lesson if your tossing out tootsie rolls to the ones that are giving the answers in the correct manner.

This afternoon Addison had her friends over for lunch, a movie day and a play outside once the rain stopped. She is having a fun summer.

We so enjoyed our three day weekend… and I’m missing all the guys heaps today, after having them around all weekend!

We have soup on the stove and corn bread in the oven with a yummy chocolate cake for dessert. Stop by if you have the chance. Ü

So thrilled to hear your plan for teaching a deaf little boy to communicate! How great it will be if he and the ones with whom he lives all learn! Yes, do not lose heart! What a treasure you are giving him!

My heart goes out to you and what you are doing? I am amazed at you and all you take on and the good you do! Please let me know if you need anything. we have some kid sign language books and maybe even still a vhs video for sign/kids version with music...not sure if any of those would be helpful? we only ever used the basics when the kids were babies...wish I'd learned more. Let me know! :)
