| ... or more specifically, State Assembly Persons Leno, Laird, Nunez, and State Senators Kehoe, Kuehl, and Migden are at it again. AB 2567 is before Governor Schwarzenegger. What is AB 2567? Well, it sounds innocent enough. It is commemorating May 22 as "Harvey Milk Day" in all public schools in the state of California. Who is Harvey Milk and why is this important? Harvey Milk was the first openly homosexual politician elected to public office in the United States. His name is well known in San Francisco where he was assassinated in 1978. Why is this important? Why should we be concerned with yet another "commemorative day" on the calendar? * Because... the text of AB 2567 states that “On Harvey Milk Day, exercises remembering the life of Harvey Milk and recognizing his accomplishments as well as the contributions he made to this state” should be conducted; specifically, “all public schools and educational institutions are encouraged to observe...and…conduct suitable commemorative exercises.” Under AB 2567, what will children in government schools be taught and how will children’s minds be “exercised?” The answer is whatever Harvey Milk believed or is said to have believed:
