Empty Nest!

~June 29, 2008

Posted in Nest Watch 2008

In the last four days, much has happened.  You can guess from the title that our little birdies have left their cozy home on our porch.  They are growing up!

For the last several days, we saw lots of feather preening and stretching like this:

and here you can see how they "scrunch" when they get startled (in this case a loud vehicle drove by):

Indeed, I began thinking about Thursday or Friday that at any moment, those babies would be off learning to fly and forage.

Yesterday morning we still had our three birdies:

And then, suddenly, there were only two!

(above picture and below video taken at about 12:43pm)

At bedtime last night, a quick check of Birdcam revealed we had only one left.

This morning it was there and, in the time it took to go tell the boys to wake up for church, then it was no longer on the nest.

I went outside to look around and knew it was close by because Mama and Papa were still buzzing my head when I stepped onto the porch.  After looking all around, I found it under our little beverage table.

What a cute little face!

I found one sibling about 3ft off the ground in a tall bush next to our porch, and while I (unsuccessfully) tried to get a picture of that one, the little guy flew up onto my porch furniture so I could get nice pictures of it's plumage.

(Actually this one was taken while it was still on the
ground, before I took the closeups above)

Now we have an empty nest on our porch and, by the look of this last picture, you can imagine the mess to clean up.

Actually, we may (if I can convince my husband) leave the nest alone for a few weeks and see if Mama wants to re-use it.  A pressure washer can clean up the porch, the mess isn't really too bad for having a family of birds living there for a month.
