The Terrestria Chronicles: The Quest For Thunder Mountain

~December 10, 2008

Posted in TOS Promotions

A dangerous quest to a mysterious mountain-but how will it end?

When Gavin's career comes to an abrupt end, the talented young minstrel learns that King Emmanuel has plans for him: plans that promise life and purpose. But Gavin must make a difficult quest to a mysterious mountain.

The young minstrel eagerly sets off on his quest with three companions, but the travelers are warned that Thunder Mountain is a place of terror and treachery. Will Gavin and his friends find Emmanuel's will on the mountain, or are they walking into a trap?

There is only one way to find out.

Travel back to the days of noble knights and powerful warlords... daring quests and deadly dragons... the days of honor and valor and chivalry.

The Quest for Thunder Mountain is the first book in the Tales from Terrestria, a companion series to the popular Terrestria Chronicles. The Quest for Thunder Mountain was written to help young adult readers experience the wonder of finding and doing the will of God.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to win a copy of "The Quest For Thunder Mountain: Book One of The Tales From Terrestria" and, while my opportunities to sit down and read come in fits and starts, I have been able to read the first chapter.

Now, normally I would not attempt to review a book based solely on the first chapter, and this won't be a book-report, but it is clear that Mr. Dunlop is a gifted writer. The book is well-written, and engaging from page one, which says a lot when many books can take several chapters to do the same. The vocabulary he employs paints word pictures with very specific detail, and draws the reader in almost instantly.

I have read a lot of novels in my life. A voracious reader as a child and young adult, I could devour whole books in an afternoon. I have read my share of "junk-food" books in the sci-fi/fantasy genre, and this is not a Twinkie, if you get my drift. Mr. Dunlop's wordsmithing will expand your child's descriptive vocabulary (and can't we all benefit from a larger descriptive vocabulary? I know I have been left searching for an adequate adjective myself, at times).   The books are written to draw the reader closer to Christ through allegory.  There is also no wizardry, as you might find in many novels these days.

I got my copy for free by chance, but FOR TODAY ONLY, you can get your hands on a copy for nearly that. At The Old Schoolhouse Store, they have put the book on sale at the stocking stuffer-friendly price of $4.50 (Regularly Priced at $8.99: Offer ends at midnight Eastern, December 10, 2008).

I can say this, I was not sure I wanted to spare the expense of getting the full set of Mr. Dunlop's "Terrestria Chronicles" novels that come before the "Tales From Terrestria" series, but as soon as Christmas is paid for I will be setting out to do so.  My children love to be read these kind of stories (they are boys, ages 4 and 7 excluding the toddler, although I believe the target audience for the Terrestria books is probably around age 10), and as we finish up Narnia I will be reading them "The Quest For Thunder Mountain" next.  After that, hopefully I will be able to back up and read them the "Terrestria Chronicles".
