• Oct. 12, 2008 - Craft Corner ~ Super Easy Mittens

Posted By HomeschoolBlogger Company Blog in CraftCorner

This project is for some super easy mittens.

SUPPLIES:

Fabric (I'm using polar fleece, but you can also use old sweaters, sweatshirts, etc.)

Sheet of paper

Marker

Pins

Scissors

Needle

Thread

To begin:

Lay your hand on a sheet of paper with fingers close together and the thumb sticking way out to the side.  Trace around your hand, make sure you leave enough paper on the sides for a half-inch seam allowance.

Draw around the hand outline, again, going out about a half-inch all the way around for the seam allowance.

Cut out the pattern on the second line.

Fold the fabric you are using double, right sides together.  Pin the pattern onto the fabric.

Cut through the fabric, around the pattern.

Remove the pattern and pin fabric together, still with right sides together.

Here is a fast and effective way to make a knot on the end of your thread.  First thread the eye of the needle with the thread.  Take the end of the thread and cross over the needle leaving a little tail, hold down against the needle with your thumb.

Now take the thread that leads off from where you are holding it down, and wrap around the needle several time (the more times you wrap it the larger the knot).  Then hold the wrapped thread with your thumb also.  Pinching the wrapped needle between your thumb and finger, with the other hand pull the needle out through the wrapped thread.  Continue pinching and pulling until it won't go any further.  TA-DA!! Knotted thread.

Beginning at the cuff, hand stitch all the way around the mitten, only coming in about a 1/4" for the seam.  Continue all the way around making very, very small and close stitches.  When you get back to the cuff, leave it open across the cuff and knot the thread again to finish it.  Trim the threads.

Take the scissors and clip the corners and curves so the fabric will lay nicely when you turn it right side out.  Be very careful not to accidently clip through the stitching.

Now, turn it right side out and smooth it out.

You have now made yourself a beautiful and easy mitten.  If you'd like a pair, just repeat all the steps above! LOL!

I'd like to apologize for not posting any craft ideas for the last several weeks.  The easy carefree days of summer had apparently spoiled me.  However, you can expect some wonderful craft ideas again.  It's taken me a little while to get back into the swing of doing school again.  Between that and the activities we've been doing with our local homeschool group and babysitting my beautiful baby grandson once a week or so, I'd been just a little distracted.  However, with the holidays right around the corner, I will be posting some great activities for you to do with your children.

As for this craft posted here, if your child would like, they could make these for gifts (of course, be sure to trace hands of a comparable sized person as the recipient), or made much smaller and used for adorable ornaments.  You could also embellish these with buttons, patches, and so on.  The possibilities are endless!

I'm Dianna, and we are homeschooling our three children for our 5th year.  We are having a great time with it and are so happy we have this right.  What a blessing our children are, I couldn't imagine sending them away to strangers for the best part of their day.  Homeschooling suits us to a T!

• Oct. 12, 2008 - Sunday is finally here

Christian Myspace Layouts

I thought that was a good graphic for a Sunday.  I need a day of rest today.  I am so happy to have it be Sunday.  I hope everyone has a great day today.

I don't even know what my plans are for this day.  Paul got a call around 2:40 that his load was ready and he needed to come get it.  He has been gone since 3.  He unloaded and is going to pick up his back haul and head this way.  He just amazes me.  We got in bed around 10.  I stayed up and read for a bit after he left.  I finally went back to sleep and he had to call me @7 to get some directions that he had forgotten to take.  lol  I read again and another girl called at 8.  So, I am awake now.  My son is up and about to go and feed the cats.  I guess it is get up time for us.  I still feel really tired.  Other son is moving but doesn't look like he wants to get up yet.  LOL

Have a blessed day.  HUGS

• Oct. 11, 2008 - Yard Sale

Posted By Christy in Family

Well, the yard sale was a flop.  We made enough to cover the food we ate.  LOL  Most of the time we do really well when we sell.  I guess I should explain that we don't just do yard sale stuff.  We go to an auction and buy a lot of scratch and dent stuff.  Most everything we get is new and has minor problems.  The good part is that we needed to pack the trailer different and that did get done.  The funny part is that I packed it wrong and didn't leave enough room for all the other stuff we need on it.  LOL  OH WELL!!!  Go figure.  We will be going to the auction next week and then selling again at the first of November.

Paul is going to work tomorrow.  The company needed help pulling some loads from a place locally.  He has to go 4 hours away and then 4 hours back with unload time in the middle of that.  That is a real bummer.  I keep trying to visualize the extra money but I would like to see him instead.

Another funny, my cat keeps moving her 2 babies.  My youngest son got them out this morning and now she moved them to a tiny place that isn't enough rooms.  Cats are so strange.  The kittens are almost as big as the mom.  It is so fun to have babies around, even if they are just kittens.  I will try to get a pic of them soon.

Have a great night!!!  HUGS!!!

• Oct. 11, 2008 - Did you.....?

Posted By Indigo

.......know that there are actually Professional Matchmakers for the wealthy and famous? Weird, right? I understand why there is still - to this day - village matchmakers in the Middle East or in tiny Amazon tribes, but in America and Europe? No way! I thought the profession had been degraded to the lifestyle of a community busy body, not a college educated scholar.

It's amazing what you can do these days. Who knows, maybe when I grow up and move to Christiania, Denmark I'll be the town's Professional Matchmaker. That would be unreal!

• Saturday, October 11, 2008 - Banana Bars

Posted By Jodi W in Home Arts

For some reason we never seem to finish all the bananas I buy before they get too ripe.  Which means I have a freezer full of frozen bananas.  I decided that since they’ve started falling out and nearly breaking familial toes, I needed to start using them up.  I love banana bread, but I wanted to try something a little different. Thus my foray into the world of Banana Bars.

The recipe originally came from Taste of Home, but I don’t know if it’s been modified since then or not.  I did change the icing recipe a little bit and it tasted a lot like glazed donut icing.  Yum!

Frosted Banana Bars

1/2 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1-1/2 cups mashed ripe bananas (about 3 medium)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
Dash salt

In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, bananas and vanilla.  Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; stir into creamed mixture just until blended  Transfer toa  greased 15 x 10 x 1 baking pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.  Cool in pan on a wire rack.

While the bars are still hot, prepare the glaze.

Powdered Sugar Glaze:

1-1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 Tablespoon butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-2 Tablespoons milk

In a small mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and beat until smooth.  Add milk until glaze is a nice drizzling consistency.  Pour glaze over hot banana bars and spread evenly.  Applying the glaze when the bars are still very warm allows it to sink into the bars a little bit and helps keep them moist.

You could also use a favorite cream cheese frosting on these (which is what I would normally do) and that would taste really good, too!

This is a big pan of bars and they were gone in about 3 days with basically 2 people eating them.  :-)  It’s a keeper!

• Oct. 11, 2008 - Saturday, in the park. NO, Saturday at the yard sale. LOL

JellyMuffin.com - The place for profile layouts, flash generators, glitter graphics, backgrounds and codes
We are heading out to set up and yard sale today.  I hope it's a great day.  We are really doing well right now on our budget.  That is a blessing.  With the economy so wishy washy, I would love to be debt free and not have to think so much.  That is an awesome dream.
Hubby made it home late last night and will be leaving in a few minutes to go and drop a load in Glasgow.  He has to haul a load tomorrow and the go to tomorrow night for a load that unloads in IN on Monday morning.  So, we really won't see him a lot this weekend.  I thank God for a man that provides for us.  I wish we could see him more.  I hope this isn't an every weekend thing.
Well, I almost have me tea drunk.  It's time.  Have a blessed day!!!  HUGS!!!

• Oct. 11, 2008 - It's early...are you awake?

Posted By MilkMaidMama

I was up this morning at 4 am fixing muffins...banana muffins to be exact... would you like the recipe?  I got it from the Breadbeckers' Recipe Collection cookbook.  Want to visit their website?  Click here  I posted about them in a recent article.  Here's the recipe:

Banana Muffins

2 1/4 cups freshly milled flour (I used Soft White)

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. soda

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1 tsp. vanilla

1 cup buttermilk (I just used regular milk)

1 egg

1/2 cup oil (I use coconut oil)

1/2 cup honey (raw is best!)

Mix together dry ingredients.  Add liquids and mix just until well blended.  Drop by spoonfuls into greased muffin pan.  Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.  (Smother in fresh real cream butter and stuff your face!!!)

We are helping out with a garage sale this morning... thus the reason for my early morning cooking.  The chickies are very excited for some strange reason.  They are hoping to make a lot of $$$$$!!  They actually have a plan that includes several new "Littlest Pet Shop" toys and some of those animals you get from Tractor Supply.  (they love to play with and properly arrange the toys at the door of Tractor Supply!)

Anyway, we have a full day ahead of us...and my oven is beeping at me!  Gotta go get more muffins in!!  Have a great day!!  And go make some muffins!!!!
