For some reason Genas puppies got me
thinking about getting a dog. Not one of her puppies mind you, I
was thinking about a cute one. I used to be a cat person. Then
over the last several months I thought I would like to have a dog in
the home to look after my family while I am working late. Then I
started thinking how nice it would be to have a dog looking out for my
daughters when they played outside. I already watch them like a
hawk. I just realized at some point before they turn 18 I will
have to let them outside by themselves.
For some reason we have centered on Australian Shepherds. They
are smart, loyal, and very trainable. However, there are multiple
adoption/rescue agencies devoted to these dogs. I have never
heard of a Golden Retriever Rescue Association. There is a reason
why people drop these dogs off at the pound. They are high energy
and smart enough to get bored. Like children they can make their
own fun. Kind of scary. Yet I feel drawn to do this. It is
kind of like the temptation to jump in a cold swimming pool. You
know it is going to hurt, but somehow you feel compelled.

We just gone one a few months ago. She has her own blog...( popcornpuppy). You will not be sorry- we have a Sheltie and we love her more and more every day. It's a little work at first (ok-it's A LOT of work at first...lol...), but just like children, if you train them well, you will have it made after awhile. So, get a puppy!!! :-)

Sorry but still trying to get over the fact that you're a CAT person! Helloooo??? With a name like Duct Tape Dad it is absolutely illegal for you to be a cat person!!!
We had the most perfect and loyal and smart and loyal and protective and beautiful dog. She was an English Springer Spaniel. Great with kids, very alert and protective, and the absolutely most perfect dog. I think a neighbor down the street killed her somehow-- probably shot her. People are quite protective of their "property" down here and she would never have just run away or gotten lost. *sigh* I miss her.
I hope you get your doggie. I always had such comfort knowing that our faithful dog was out with the boys in the driveway!

Golden Retriever Rescue groups exist too and they are a lot more easy going than the Aussies seem to be-- and every bit as protective as the next dog with a concern for his/her pack.

the best dog we ever had when I was a kid was Misty our golden retriever, she would gently take my 4 yr old bro by the hand and lead him away from the road and she wouldn't let anyone outside the family touch us kids, she even grabbed my dad's hand when he was roughhousing with us (she didn't bite hard enough to bruise or break skin, she just held his hand in her mouth)
Our current dog is an australian shepherd
She is so great with the kids even at 10yrs old she is running around keeping up with them. I think those are my two top picks for family dogs.
