Lost in the South
I went to Raleigh NC today. I must say that some sadist must have
designed the road systems. I work in a mental hospital and I was
headed to another hospital to talk about the services we have to
offer. By the time we got there I was almost ready to check
in. If there is anyone reading this from Raleigh maybe you could
explain. Why do they post notice of some roads 4 miles in advance
in the center medium and then give no warning for for turn offs to
other major routes? How many Route 64s are there? It seemed
to me like there was a 64 with rt 40, a different one with route 1, and
another one with the 440. And most importantly, how did you
convince the federal government to not let anyone know which direction
Rt. 440 is heading. I dont care whether I am on the inside 440
or the outside 440. I just want to know where I am going.
Even the locals seem confused. We got directions from 4 different
people when we were lost. We got them at the same gas
station. We got what appeared to be 4 different answers on how to
get to a place 15 minutes away. Some of them even used road
names.

Here the roads have 3 different names if the road goes straight longer than 5mi unfortunately, that's no joke.

I grew up in Burlington NC, just an hour away and ever since they finished the 440 loop which was supposed to make life easier I've been confused. I think everyone is. The roads in Raleigh make no sense. I don't understand the inside loop or the outside loop or which direction they go in....N,S,E or W. I think one of the patients at that hospital you visited designed the road system there. If you ever protest, count me in!!!

You think that's bad? You should try driving in Pittsburgh. We had to buy a city map book so that we could count streets on the map and guess which one to turn on because the signage is so bad. This place has the ability to reduce me to a quivering lump of tears in no time.

Few people are humble enough to admit they don't know how to get to someplace close. Think about where you live. It is your home. You think you know everything about it. It's cozy and familiar. Then go tour your block with someone who has never been there. They will spot, with fresh eyes, things you never knew were there.
So some people have trouble admitting to themselves that they don't know where something is, within their comfortable sphere. They give directions to what they think you might be talking about. Then they feel good for having helped. And they figure that if they did perhaps tell you wrong, you eventually will stumble upon your destination anyway
Chalk it up to human nature..

Poor You. I live here and I still don't like to drive in Raleigh. Basically, we memorize how to get somewhere and that's that.
