I'm studying the book of John using Kay Arthur's God Are You There? It's a basic study which introduces the Inductive Method of Bible Study. I started it this summer, hoping that it would be something I could do with my family, especially my youngest sister and brother, but that didn't really work out. So now, (after neglecting it for about a month) dh and I are finishing it together.
Today I was in Chapter 4 where Jesus meets the Samaritan woman-- a very familiar story. As I read, I was struck by verse 42 which refers to the woman's fellow countrymen who had come to meet Jesus, "and they were saying to the woman, 'It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.' " Initially, the neighbors believed in Jesus simply because of what the woman had said to them, now they had come to Him and heard Him themselves.
I realized that my kids are like them. Right now, they believe in Jesus and the Bible because of my word and my husband's word (and the word of other believers in our family and at church), but my prayer for them is that they would come to a point where they believe, "no longer because of what I have said," but because they have heard for themselves and "know" that Jesus "is indeed the Savior of the world." That is my prayer for my children!
Lord Jesus, Please reveal Yourself to my children, that they may come to know You as their personal Lord and Savior. I thank you for the honor and privilege to teach them about You and to teach them Your Word. I pray that You would open the eyes of their hearts that they might see You and put their trust in You and believe in You alone, that they would recognize that You are indeed the Savior of the world and the Savior of their souls. I pray that they would desire to read and study Your word themselves. Thank You for Your faithfulness. Help me to be faithful to the task You have given to me.
In Your Precious and Holy Name,
Amen |
