Dec. 31, 2006 - Reading Through the Bible in a Year

One of the most common New Year's resolutions that I hear in the church is to read through the entire Bible in a year.  I tried once in college and only made it through Deuteronomy.  I was reading it in my flesh and not in the Spirit, so I kept getting hung up on things.  I was in that collegiate mindset of challenging everything so I really wrestled with the Lord.  Then, I got exasperated and quit.  I've matured significantly since then and have grown to understand better things like God accepting Abel's sacrifice and rejecting Cain's.  I think I'm ready to try again, but this time, I want to do it in the Spirit, praying continually that I would grow in my relationship with the Lord through time in His Word and that I would be challenged to change my actions, my attitudes, my idea of things, as I read and His Truth is imparted to my heart.   I don't want it to be a pride thing or something I do just so I can say that I've done it!  I want to do it wholeheartedly and am committed to seeing it through to completion.

I was given a Bible that is divided into daily readings which combine the daily reading with a Psalm and a Proverb, so I could just read that, but I was thinking that I might want to read the Bible chronologically- in the order that it happened.  I found a great resource here at Back to the Bible which has several options (chronological, historical, Old and New Testament together, Begining to End, and Blended).  I think I'm going to go with the Chronological and dh and 1ds9 are going to do the same.  Let me know if you'd like to join us!

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." II Timothy 3:16-17 (NASB)

"The Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." Hebrews 4:12 (NASB)

It is one of my goals for 2007 too.
I'm using a Discipleship Journal plan. I like it because it has built in "off" days to catch up.
How awesome your son is going to do this too.

Happy New year,
Linda

Jan. 5, 2007 - Reading through the Bible

I'm doing the same thing through Back to the Bible. Chronological makes the most sense to me too. I always got hung up around Leviticus so I'm hoping to be able to make it this time. This time I feel a "need" to read it, not just a want. Probably had a pride thing getting in the way in the past!

What a great idea! I've been reading The Message like a book....starting in Mathew and I'm in Galations now. It's not real great for memorization but for understanding and meaning you just can't beat it.

Thanks for the tip for bible study for the kids. I immediately went to Rainbow Resources and ordered some for the kids. They look just awesome!

Oh, I have committed to trying to read the Bible in less than a year before I start seminary. Getting through Moses' books are tough. One thought, if you are open to it, is reading The Message by Eugene Peterson. It is a good way to read through the Bible. In fact, they now sell it in a side by side version with NIV, so you compare his translation next to a "Biblically approved translation". I think it is a great resource.
