For the Sake of the Call

Mar. 8, 2007 - Perfect Hospitality

“His house was perfect, whether you like food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all.  Evil things did not come into that valley…All of them, the ponies as well, grew refreshed and strong in a few days there.  Their clothes were mended as well as their bruises, their tempers and their hopes.  Their bags were filled with food and provisions light to carry but strong to bring them over the mountain passes.  Their plans were improved with the best advice.”

J.R.R. Tolkien

Describing Elrond’s House

Actually, dh is reading it to us in the evenings. The kids are captivated! After listening to my voice all day, it's so refreshing to hear his, and he's doing an awesome job with Gollum! This is the first time he's done a read aloud for us, and I hope he continues! I'm excited to hear how it all turns out, I've only read the first 6 chapters myself....got interrupted in the middle, and never finished.

Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog. It's always nice to see your smiling face! I've never read "The Hobbit" but I love the sampling you posted. Sounds intriguing! I hope you are feeling better and how precious to read of the care you were given by your children. You are blessed!

We are Tolkien fans in this family too. Sounds like you have a wonderful family! We are seriously looking at home schooling as our little one will be 5 next month.

What a wonderful place. I would love to have a home like this, but I am afraid we are far from it right now. Many people couldn't rest here because 4 dc would stress them too much. ( Although perhaps that is more of an indictment on them than on my dc.) And my house is not beautiful or particularly clean. Perhaps someday. But for now I do try to have a hospital and homey atmosphere for those who do come.

Love Tolkien and I think I might make that description a wall hanging of some sort and put it on my wall for a goal poster. What do you think?

That's so cool that your family is reading it aloud, I've done that a few times with the kids but DH has never joined in! What a lovely quote you chose - reminds me of a certain friend I have (who has since moved a few states away) - I always felt refreshed after chatting with her.

What a fun party you gave :) And I was so impressed with how your children cared for you. I remember when I was in labor with our last baby that the children came in and out of the room, giving me cards and little gifts. My eldest daughter would rub my back or my feet. My 2yo just came up to me with huge wet puckered lips to kiss me goodnight. I love being a mommy.

Blessings,
Keri
