For the Sake of the Call

Mar. 31, 2007 - Starting Over

When I lived in Pennsylvania, I had some awesome friends!  Some of the best friends ever are made during those late night collegiate talks!

When I lived in Maryland, I had some awesome friends!  There’s something special about the friendships made with other newlyweds, and during the pregnant or nursing years!  And the best friendships of all time are often made while studying God’s Word together!

When I lived in Virginia, I had some awesome friends!  The encouragement of experienced homeschoolers, when I was a neophyte, and the camaraderie of those who share the same vision for training up children in righteousness resulted in precious friendships.

I miss living close to these awesome friends!

Now that I’m in Indiana, there is the potential for awesome friendships, but it takes time, and effort.  I'm extremely thankful for honeybee, but I wish she lived around the corner and not on the other side of the city!  I have been blessed by some really neat people at church.  We began hosting a weekly home fellowship group and are growing in godly relationships with the members of this group.  And now, after dragging my feet for the past few months, I finally got connected with a local homeschool support group and am once again on yet another e-mail loop. Today was our first Park Day with the new group, and I’m glad that we went.  I met a couple of ladies who seem to be kindred spirits and live close, and I’m excited to see how the relationships develop.

It can be challenging and even a little scary to start over again, but I know that the resulting friendships are well worth the time and effort.

Mar. 31, 2007 - I can relate and sympathize

We moved out here 3 1/2 years ago. I had some great friends in Illinois. Now, out here in Idaho, in a very small town, it's hard to make friends. I do have one good one the Lord has blessed me with out here. And her and me started a homeschool playgroup because there was nothing for homeschoolers. The Lord always has greater things in mind for us than we can fathom for ourselves. It's good to hear you are reaching out, and I know the Lord will bless it all. :)

You know..sometimes God brings people across your path and you think, isn't that nice. Then sometimes he brings people across your path and you immediately love them like a sister! You cherish your time and conversation with them! That's you! I'm sooo happy God brought me such a great new friend!! Bless you for blessing me!

Mar. 31, 2007 - I agree that starting over is hard work.

I know when we moved here 4 years ago it took about a year to get some good friendships started and then another year to some them grow into something worthwhile. Now I have a number of great friendships, although one of my dearest friends is moving way in June. Anyway, you have a year down so that hardest part is over I would guess.

I so understand your heart! We've moved several times and really, this is the first place I have close friends since we were in college! It takes so much time, but then it is so worth it, isn't it? I actually just posted about a friendship of mine. Have you ever read Angela Thomas (Guffey)'s book called Tender Mercy for a Mother's Soul? There is a chapter called something like Someone to Run Beside. Beautiful! One of my favorite books. I hope you soon find several people to run beside.

So, so true! Making friends IS work but so worthwhile in the end. It's always been difficult for me since I tend to be shy and aloof at first. I've always hated being the new person in school, town, coop or church! It's one of the things I need to work on (: Good friends are hard to come by but the good ones are the ones who stick around! We miss you all and the girls loved seeing your family Christmas picture. You all looked wonderful! Take care.

Molly (:

I've moved SO often and it looks like it's in my future, so I really understood your post. But in my case there are a few anchor friends that no matter where I go, I have them.

But meeting new friends is fun too. Scary at first, but rewarding.

I so can relate to this post right now. I feel the same way. After four months of "barren" friend life, I finally feel connected and we're leaving here! But God grants the courage and strength to start again. Thanks for stopping by and saying hi at my blog. Your friendship is encouraging!!

I'm so jealous of the fact that you've had friends in all those places. I need to learn from you.
We've been in CO for 6 months now, and I'm feeling more isolated than I ever have. My hubby just pointed out that I haven't had any friends since college some 15+ years ago. (If you have an hour to read my long post...I could use some advice.)
I can make "surface" friends pretty well, it's the "kindred spirits" that elude me.
Thanks for your transparency and encouragement tonight.

I have been without physically close friends for a long time, and was beginning to think I didn't need any. But recently, we visited somewhere and made a few friends, and now I am longing for them - and I only knew them for a few days!
It is in our blood to need other relationships, as long as they don't interfere with our relationship with God or our husbands, yes?
Thank you for being my cyber-friend! :)

I have a great friend who has moved away twice. She currently lives in MI. She has called me every Friday morning at 6:30 for the last 3 years so that we can catch up and pray together. She struggles with fitting in up north, not knowing anyone, but is finally making friends. She says there is a bond that is missing because of a lack of history. I have lived here, in Indiana, for the last 20+ years. I feel very blessed that we have not had to move away and leave a great church and friends. I will pray that you too will make some great friendships while you are here in Indiana.
Blessings,
Jenn

I can totally relate to this. We've lived in a new city for two years now, and I've yet to make a whole lot of progress in the close friend department. And it's mostly my own fault. Four kids, a part time job, homeschooling. I can only be spread so thin, yet I know friendships are so important. It's nice to know it's not just me.
