May. 3, 2007 - The Hand of God

Do you recognize the hand of God in your life?

As I was chatting with a friend this afternoon, we started talking about recognizing the hand of God in our lives.  Both of us are very aware of God’s hand even in the smallest details.  She’s always sharing her latest “God-story” and it’s never a challenge for me to recall one of my own.  What some people call coincidence or chance, we recognize as God’s providence.  The biggest example that I have is of the number of providential occurrences that brought us to this particular house and the church where we now worship and serve.  The Story of His House For Us has become an oft repeated testimony, even to unbelievers, and an encouragement to us that we are in the center of His will!  As I’ve grown in my understanding of God’s sovereignty, I just assumed that other Christians saw things the same way that I do; so I was quite surprised when my friend shared with me the story of a Christian couple who don’t view such things in the same way.  After a week of house-hunting and school interviews, everything was coming together beautifully and when my friend's husband marveled at how wonderfully God was working everything out, the other couple disagreed and the comment was made, “Well, you’re Calvinists and we’re Armenians.”  Do Arminians not recognize God’s hand in their life?

I grew up mostly in Baptist churches, and when I would make comments on things like “age of accountability,” I was often called an Arminian by my ultra-Calvinist professors at my Presbyterian college; but when I understood the Arminian views, I emphatically denied any connection with them, although I could never fully embrace the 5 points of Calvinism.  I was somewhere in the middle, not willing to be tied to either camp.  As I continue to grow in my faith, and study the Word, I have grown ever-more convinced of God’s sovereignty and His plan for my life.  There are countless verses in the Bible which speak of His sovereignty, “It is I,” God says repeatedly in the book of Isaiah.  “For I know the plans I have for you…” He tells us.  The New Testament is full of such statements as well; to the extent that Paul writes that God “determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,” on Mars Hill in Acts 17:26.  These are just a couple of the many verses that come to mind as I type.  As I read these verses, I realize that some of the teaching that I’d heard in the past that God doesn’t really care who I marry (as long as they are a believer), and that God doesn’t care where we live, are not exactly accurate.  God is intimately acquainted with me and desires to be included in every decision that I make.

Discussions of God’s sovereignty and human free will are often passionate and rarely resolved.  Our minds can’t really grasp how both can exist in harmony.  In the end, God only knows.  Still, despite the disagreement, I hadn’t realized how significantly your interpretation of Scripture impacts your perception of circumstances in your life, until my friend shared this conversation.

I won’t argue theology, but I must say that I am distressed and actually feel sorry for Christians who are unable to see God’s hand moving in practical, tangible, ways in their lives.  More importantly, when we refuse to recognize the hand of God, we neglect to give Him the glory He deserves!

He deserves the glory when He provides a great deal on purchase at a yard sale.

He deserves the glory when our husbands get a bonus.

He deserves the glory when our kids remain healthy during a lapse in our health insurance coverage.

He deserves the glory when a homeschooling family moves in across the street.

He deserves the glory when our kids grasp a challenging mathematical concept.

He deserves the glory when we are protected in a car accident.

He deserves the glory when we are blessed by the warm sunshine and a cool breeze.

He deserves the glory when we have an opportunity to share a testimony with a stranger on the playground.

He deserves the glory when the right size of jeans that your rapidly growing son needs are on sale on the clearance rack.

He deserves the glory when a widow at church offers to watch the kids so that you and your husband can go out on a date.

He deserves the glory when _______________.

These are all evidences of God’s hand working in your life.  He cares about the details!  Recognize His hand, look for it, be blessed and encouraged, and give Him the glory!

We also need to remember that neither Arminianism nor Calvinism are Biblical terms. The truth is that we don't "have" to be in either camp!

What a good reminder to look for God in everything (sometimes it can be hard to remember, especially in the not-so-good things).

Though I don't label myself at all by doctrines/denominations, I do agree with you on the fact that we should give God the glory for everything. I have gotten laxed on that, a story to long to go into here, but lately the Lord has been showing me more and more not to cut Him out of my everyday life. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Oh, I hear your heart's cry in this and all I can say is "yes!" and "Amen!" Truthfully, I don't even know the extent of what those two sides are/mean; I am just a Bible believing Christian woman who also sees God's fingerprints in my ever waking moments. I am truly thankful for them, and yes, to God be the glory forever and ever (Amen!)

Blessings,
Keri

Amen and Amen!

I vividly remember being criticized because I was thankful that God protected us when we ran out of gas on a dangerous road where HE provided a pull off just the size of our van and in just the spot we coasted to. Some argue that He doesn't need to be concerned about parking spaces and trivial things; that they have no eternal significance. ALL things work together for good... God is awesome!

preach on sista'

Yep, several of my last dozen posts have shown God's hands in my life.

Running out of gas on the freeway in Seattle.....big one!
Making double my prayed over ammount in my garage sale.
Well timed books recommended by a friend I never see.

and the latest post about the dentist money.

God's hands....all over my life. Just keep on testifying about what He's doing in your life. I guess it's up to each of us to tell others. How on earth will we know how AMAZING He is, and what He's doing if WEEEEEE don't tell others.

Amen, sister!
I've always felt the same way - you articulated it so well! Thank you!
Timing is a big one - we're running late and come across someone needing help with their car - and they were running late, too! He is always working in the midst of us!

While I don't know much about Armenians and Calvinists (and I'm assuming you're not talking about people from Armenia?), I have to agree with you whole-heartedly!

I would have to be an absolute fool to think that I could have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and him NOT care about me? Not care about the details in my life? That blessings are just chance and of my own doing?

That just doesn't make sense. I know, recognize and appreciate that God is not only in charge of the big picture of my life, but that He cares for me and loves me enough to show me His presence in the every-day. Life is a lot of little things put together... not just a few big things.

I feel truly sad for those who don't know the comfort and assurance that God is in the everyday. How scary and lonely it must be to feel like you have to face each day alone!

I hear you!! I don't think you DO have to "camp out" in any one spot...

We are actually studying Romans 9 this week at church, with the AWESOME theme of God's Sovereignty... it's SUCH a comfort, to know... KNOW God's hand IS involved in my life, to KNOW His control... even in the midst of free will, choice, etc.

AAHH!! such a mystery! I have come to love that we cannot understand... it keeps me from thinking I'm all that and then some, and to keep me from trying to wheel and deal with the Almighty... and then to to try to grasp this amazing huge sovereign powerful God... my best friend, Redeemer, Groom, Lover, Daddy.... pretty wild!

That is a subject that is taught, over and over, in our house. Give God the credit! He DOES care about the details (big or small) in our lives. I teach my kids that there's no such thing as luck or coincidences. I staunchly believe that! I have great difficulty giving myself any credit if something goes well - to me, it's the Lord's doing. Now, if something is botched, well then, I'll take the blame, no problem! That may be extreme but that's just how I feel. We look for God's hand in our lives all the time. It helps my kids to believe in a God that cares about them, and loves them dearly. It is so cool to hear one of my kids say "God did _____ for us!" You are right about our minds (being finite) not being able to comprehend the idea of a free will and God already knowing the outcome (pre-something, the word escapes me at present!) But the good news is that we DON'T HAVE TO COMPREHEND! That's where faith steps in and allows us to believe! Gosh, this is going on too long - sorry! I don't get to discuss spiritual issues too much with adults. Thanks - you are a gem! God bless!

Beautiful post!

I have to agree with Marsha (drewsfamily)--how can the Lord desire for us to have a truly intimate relationship with His Son, if He doesn't intend to return the favor? Marriage won't work that way, either--a great marriage is one where we are *intimately involved* with our spouse.

I loved your thoughts, and the way you put them together as well. This has been something I have noticed in my own life, especially the last few months. That is, I am *noticing* more of those "little things" that show the love of my Father in my life.

Thanks for sharing!

I agree with you in that we need to recognize God in our lives. I believe that sometimes He works through us in many different ways, even sometimes allowing us to make our own choices, and then confirming whether or not we made the right choice. I am so grateful to Him for all the direction that He has and continues to give me.

I too feel sadness for those who do not recognize His hand in their lives. I don't think I believe in coincidence anymore. When they keep piling up on each other over and over again, it's time to re-evaluate the situation.

(I'm personally very grateful that God inspired someone to come up with indoor plumbing. Aren't you?)

This is such a wonderful post, and a great reminder. I needed to hear that so I can remember to point out God's provisions to our children and not let them slide by unnoticed! I have so many God-stories that point to his direct interest and love for us, his providence and provision. Wonderful writing!

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and sharing such encouraging words. I appreciate you letting me know if my RSS feed was working too. Thank you, thank you!
I love what you wrote on this post. I so agree with you that we should acknowledge God in all things in our lives. He truly has blessed my life and it is no coincidence that he guided me on the path to my marriage, my children, and now homeschooling. Thanks for sharing your testimony of God with us. It surely strengthens mine.

May. 7, 2007 - don't armenians see God's hand? - YES!

Posted by javamamma
Very interesting... I suppose if someone would look at my 'theology', I would be classified as Armenian. And I absolutely SEE and give God the glory for what He does in our lives. I'm not studied up on either 'side' but my view is - God has a plan, an amazing one - and we need to pray it into existence. 'Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN'. And when it happens, He gets all the praise!

Great post. And I enjoyed reading all the comments too!

Amen and Amen! That was a great post! Thanks for the reminder to always see God's hand even in the little things that we often take forgranted. It is also a good reminder to point those things out to my children so that they can also see how God is working in our lives. -- Amy

May. 9, 2007 - The soverignity of God is biblical

It doesn't belong to just one theological view or shouldn't. It is sad when Christians don't see this.
I thought of you today as we drove up route 15 past LEesburg. Last year was when we stopped in to meet you all. I am glad we did that, especially since you moved soon after.
