Jun. 2, 2007 - Garage Sale Success (but not mine)

Garage Sales make me crazy!

Finding the diamond in the rough is not one of my gifts.  When I go to a garage sale, all I see is junk.  Looking through piles of other people’s trash is more liable to push me into a panic attack than to cause me elation over the thrill of the treasure hunt!  I admit to becoming quite envious after listening to my friends’ tales of the great bargains they've found.  They make it seem so simple and at times I’ve been inspired enough to give it another try as a result, but I never have the kind of success that my friends do.  Besides that, sleeping in on Saturday morning is much more enjoyable to me than rummaging through often unorganized piles of stuff.  So I’ve pretty much given up on “garage-saleing.”  (I know; some of you are absolutely appalled!)

Imagine my surprise to awake this morning to the sounds of children emptying their piggy banks to count their money.  I thought the ice cream truck was around the corner; but no, our next door neighbors were having a garage sale!  To my elation, my eldest daughter found quite a treasure for quite a bargain.  She hasn’t had a bookshelf in her room and has wanted one.  I never could have found anything as cute as the one she bought for $5!!!  She and Daddy split the cost and prayed together; thanking God for His provision and for giving her the desire of her heart!  After she scrubbed it down, I helped her organize her room.

I’m thrilled for her!  How precious to have procured her own bookshelf!  She’ll always have the satisfaction of knowing that it’s hers and that she bought it with her own money!  My Mommy imagination started fast-forwarding to the day she’d take it with her to her own home, and how it may even end up in her daughter’s room someday, and before I knew it, I was in tears.  It happens so easily!  J

That was so sweet! Such a look of pride and joy on her face as she lovingly cleaned off her new bookshelf.

Wow, what a bargin. I don't mind trying to find them, but somehow I never do. But that is a beautiful bookcase. She did such a good job cleaning it and setting her things on it. :)

AWWW.The shelf almost brings me to tears as I had one almost exactly the same that my parents had made for me when I was around her age. I remember the pride in dusting it and rearranging all my nick nacks on it. What a wonderful find for your daughter......she will probably remember it forever as I recall mine. Thanks for the post and my memory of my past.
Have a great weekend.

That shelf is beautiful! Great job, daughter! :-) I love yardsales and thrift shops. I love rummaging through piles of junk! :-) My mom is the master. She can find amazing things for pennies! I learned it from her.

Now that's a girl after my own heart. I usually don't garage sale because like you.....I love sleeping in on Saturday morning, but getting a good deal like your daughter? it makes it worth getting up.

What a nice daddy to pray with her and thank God for his provision.

I loved this post, friend! Everything about it. That bookshelf is a treasure- not just because it is so stinkin' adorable that it would be my favorite thing in my girls' room, but because it was such a demonstration to her about God's provision! And her own money- wow. Too perfect. :)

How funny - I just finished having a garage sale! They make me crazy, too, but I enjoy going to them much more than having my own. I don't like piles of junk either and my criteria is this - if it's a house I wouldn't mind going inside, then I'll stop and look at their sale. Otherwise, forget it! My son loves sales and he visited the other sales going on in our neighborhood, checking out the "Free" boxes. How wonderful that your daughter bought her own book shelf? God is good! It's a nice one, too, she looks very pleased. Thanks for your prayers - I am grateful. Todd is well, as far as I can tell. Have a great week!

Cute shelf. Wish I had found it first! :)

I love garage saling, but I don't go very often because I'm too tempted to buy things that I don't really need.

Congrats on the new book shelf. Your daughter did great!!! We had a garage sale last weekend... well, my son had one. He was determined to make some money to go towards this item he wants to purchase. I got up early, helped organize all that he wanted to sell... I sat outside with him and sold just about everything (mostly toys that my son put out). It was fun... but, like you, I'm not a garage sale kind of gal. It was great to see him count his money after it was over - nice reward.

That really is a beautiful bookshelf - perfect for a little girl!

You had me laughing about thinking of her passing it on to HER daughter. And then I started thinking of mine doing the same... and I joined you with the tears. :) Thanks a lot!
