Aug. 4, 2007 - Multi-level Teaching with Saxon Math?

I need help.

Has anyone ever tried to do multi-level teaching with Saxon Math 1-3?  I enjoy Saxon Math and have invested in all the manipulatives and everything, but Math 1, 2, & 3 are very time consuming to teach and it has always been a challenge to teach two separate levels of Saxon.  Last year I ended up doing more "kitchen-math" and "real life mathematics" with my younger girls which works well, except that they are BEGGING me to do Math.  My oldest daughter does not claim to like school, but when I ask her what she does like, she says, "Math."  They don't see baking as Math; they want to do Saxon.

With all the repetition inherent to Saxon, I've thought that I should be able to teach them at the same time, providing more depth when necessary for the younger child, but the books aren't laid out in a way that it's easy to do that.  I've been googling to see if anyone has tried this before, but have been unsuccessful in finding any help.  So, dear homeschool friends, have any of you tried this before or do you know of others who have.  My thought is that I will use Saxon 3 with my 3rd and 1st graders, but I'm afraid it might be too fast for my 1st grader...thoughts? opinions?  comments?

Thanks!

I have a friend who has done it successfully. She has two boys...when she started this one was in 1rst grade, the other in 3rd. She used 2nd year material and tailored it herself to make it fit for both boys. They are now in 6th and 8th grades, she's still using that principle, and it works great. She plans to sepereate them next year when the older begins high school.
That's the beauty of homeschool..make it work for your family! I used the same principle with my 3 boys when they were in elementary, but we didn't begin Saxon until they were in middle school.
Hope this helps!

But you might get some good ideas at www.livingmath.net and there is also a great yahoo group related to this site.

No advice here, but you may be glad to here that Barb and I are homeschooling for the first year this fall with Cameron in Second Grade. Owen is in Kindergarten, and we're enrolling him into Honey McCallom Christian School up the street for one year before we bring him into the homeschool fold next year. Pray for Barb!

I bet you could do their math "warm ups" (ie calendar work, etc...) and then let one do a drill while you explain a concept to another and vice versa. My children respond well to racing a timer. I bet your first grader will surprise you with the way she can keep. You can always take it a little slower with her at the start until she picks up the nack.
I also spend 30 minutes or so on math with my younger ones and then take a "break" and read history, science or First Language Lessons before I have them move on to more math. It seems to help them make less "tired" mistakes towards the end. I'm not using Saxon anymore for my younger ones, (Horizons) but the idea still works well for my gang.

I'm sure you'll do great!
Warmly,
Maggie

I can only say I'll be praying for you on this.
It is an awesome idea though.

I enjoyed your scheduling post. I remember when I was single and childless I could schedule every single moment. Each additional person into my life brings a new "component" to the scheduling of time.
I have stayed away from MOTH, because simply stated I don't need anymore guilt in my life. I bring enough on by myself.

I'm going to blog about the sweet award you gave me, I hope today.

Blessings and {{{hugs}}}},
Linda

I came by thinking "Where on earth is she? She hasn't posted in FOREVER." Then I remembered you just did; I simply didn't have any knowledge of Saxon. Just wanted you to know I miss you. :)
