Aug. 6, 2007 - The First Day is not all it's cracked up to be

We started "school" today.  The longer we homeschool, the more of a lifestyle it becomes, but there is still a place for "academics" and "bookwork."  So when I say "school," that's what I mean.  Anyway, I'd originally planned to do school through the summer, but with all the traveling and company, it hasn't worked out to do that, so today we started up again after about 2 months off.  In the past, I've started the day after Labor Day, so we're a full month ahead of schedule, but with all the time we lost last year with moving and getting settled, and my typical habit of taking off a whole month around Thanksgiving and Christmas in addition to having a 4-day schoolweek, I figured we needed to start school earlier.  So we're starting.  And our first day went okay, I guess.  My much anticipated planning weekend didn't really yield the time that I needed for planning, so I still have to figure out a schedule for Science and History and get a few more things organized, and after having maintained a decent order of cleanliness for much of the past couple of months, the house is a wreck again, and there's still a huge pile of unfolded laundry that needs to be folded and put away and a sink full of dishes, oh, and I-- who so rarely get sick-- am fighting Bronchitis and my four extremely healthy kids all have colds, so why not?  Doesn't it sound like the best day to start school to you?  Ha!  I thought about waiting until after I'd cleaned the house again and folded the laundry and we were all healthy, but I decided it was better to just start.  You have to face the first day at some point, who's to say that any other day will be better than today?  The one good thing was that even though I set my new alarm clock to go off at 6:45pm instead of 6:45am, I still awoke on my own and actually Got. Out. Of. Bed.   If you had seen my lazy self the past two months, sleeping until 9am or 10am or 11am, and known the insomnia that has kept me up until midnight the last few nights, you would understand what a miracle it was that I got up on my own when the first number on the clock read SIX!  I'm so glad that I did, as I would never have been able to make it to this point in the day without spending that quiet time in the Word and Praying!   God is good!  I praise Him for getting my lazy butt out of bed!

It's almost 3pm now and the kids are still working on a couple of things.  My older two struggled to get out of bed at 8am and everyone was slow moving in the morning and I did have a couple of interruptions, so we didn't work as efficiently as possible.  I've also had some griping about copywork, "This is too long!  I can't write this much."  It's not really, they've just gotten out of the habit and need to get used to doing "schoolwork" again.  But it was good to be in God's Word with the kids again and recommence our Bible Study.  I regret that I have neglected it!  God is gracious and the Spirit was bringing conviction not only to me but to the kids as well.  I had a wonderful opportunity to encourage my daughter (who tends to internalize things) when she very openly and honestly mourned her sin.  It was amazing to see her respond to the Spirit in the way she did and to be able to lead her through repentance and restoration!   And that's why I do what I do.  Because you never know when those moments will come and you can't force them to come on your own timetable.  It's in the quantity time that you really experience the quality time and are able to take advantage of the teachable moments.

That being said, I really need to make myself another cup of tea and go fold some laundry or something.  I'd really like a nap, but the insomnia is bad enough without one, I'd be up until 2am if I yielded to the urge to sleep now.  So, I press on, glad that the first day is behind me (almost) because it's just not all it's cracked up to be.

Hang in there! I'm so proud of you for getting up :) I hope I can. Than ks for your note. We are actually not starting until next Mon. I've given myself a whole week to do nothing except scrapbook--that is no school stuff. Unfortunately, a few things will probably creep in. Then there's "life" to contend with! HA!

On another note. I have a verse for you that I meant to tell you yesterday. Good ole Romans! "The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable". How's that for a doosey! For what you are called and the gifts you are given...there's just no going back! They are irrevocable! I was so excited when I read it (and immediately thought of some of our recent talks--which I've loved by the way:)). Just thought I'd share! heehee
Blessings,
Melissa

Wow, that's great that you're getting a head start to your school year! I'm just barely beginning to think about starting again. I am proud of you for getting up so early & getting a good start to your day! And here you have all this time left in your day now, too. Make it count! :~)

You got to sleep until 9am??? Wow. I haven't done that for YEARS!!! My oldest is an early riser, my middle one is a late riser, and my baby... well, she does what she wants at the moment. I think sleeping until 7am is late and a good night sleep. lol.

Congratulations on your first day. Keep it going. Us homeschool families always plan as we go - smooth the corners and change things up a bit... no worries.

Sounds like important, intimate times! So happy for you. It ALMOST inspires me to start school, but nope, not really. The big ones will start PS on the 15th; the littles will wait until after then; maybe even until after Labor Day, but I doubt it. I'm starting to get excited!! :)

you'll fall into a routine quickly. the first day is always hard. even the first day of each week is hard for us.

we alternate history and science each week. one week history, the next week science. it has worked out very well.

I'm glad things went 'ok' for you on your first day. Ours is next Monday. Sorry to hear about everyone being sick, that does make it hard. I pray things keep improving for you. :)

You're on the ball girlfriend! But I am inspired by your openness. It's so hard to read that others don't struggle in the areas that I do. (like sleeping in...)

It' s nice to read that another godly woman who loves her kids and hubby and the Lord....also likes to sleep in. :) (my bed is realllllly comfy)

I am also inspired by your bible study that you worked on with your kids. Care to share? Was it just reading the Word? Any memorization? or is that where the 'loooong' copywork came in?

Jot me a note. I'm really curious.

I am glad you went ahead with your plan and even weathered the interruptions.
My Favorite Homeschooling moments were like the one you discribed with your daughter. You never know when they fell into your lap. Aren't you so very thankful that conversation was with you and not a guidance counselor or a girlfriend. She chose you!
Happy First day of School may you have many such moments of growth together.

I could have written this post...even down to the basket of laundry that is sitting behind me as I type. Yes, I confess, there it sits. Alas, some things have to give, right? Especially on the first day of school. Laundry takes a back seat. Thanks for your great sharing...upbeat, enjoyable. It was our first day too, and I managed to get up in the 6:30 range too! Wow. That was a big first, and I was really hoping it would actually happen, since I've been LAZY for the last months. Great post!

I admire you. I not very organized, one of the reasons that I choose not to homeschool. When I read posts like this, it encourages me to get up a little earlier and try again.

Your awesome!

I started yesterday too... with what we had here... just math and Language Arts and a little history stuff that we are still finishing up from last year... I want to continue it, even if it will be sparodic... its fun and includes a time line so why not?!?

good for you for starting and getting out of bed... that is my struggle right now... I just want to go back to sleep! Of course that wouldn't be possible without TV first thing in the morning... I know that is not healthy... Aagh! :) bad habit of mine from survival days when my boy got up between 5 and 5:30am.

Oh, even the thought of starting school right now makes me shudder. Sounds like a good 1st day. You are a wise woman for starting early. I did that last year, and boy, it sure helped me feel a lot better about not getting around to school pretty much all of December. Hey, I'm going to add you to my "Blogs I Like To Read" links. Hope that's OK. ~Karlie

For some reason, I have the date of Sept 1st thrown out there. I really should just start tomorrow. Okay, okay... the day after tomorrow.

I should have attainable goals, right?

The laundry, dishes and stuff will always be there... Clean it up today and more will magically appear by the morning. So I will just do it!

It is almost 1am. Not good when I need to reinstitute the decent wakeup time myself!

Praying that tomorrow goes even better than today for you, my friend!

Sounds like you were able to accomplish much, despite all the challenges. The Lord is so tender to us, isn't He?

We had our first real week back at school last week and although it went fairly well, we have been and continue to face two weeks filled with interruptions and outside-the-family needs. Sigh...

Warmly,
Maggie
