For the Sake of the Call
Aug. 17, 2007 - Intro to Baking 101 and My Mom Was Right |
Last night I wasn't feeling well and 2dd8 was hungry for dessert and there wasn't any. She wanted me to bake something, but I just didn't have the energy to do so. So I told her she could bake a cake herself. I got all the ingredients out for her and gave her the recipe and let her go, while I sat on a stool supervising and snapping pictures. This is the first time she has baked a cake entirely on her own with only minimal assistance (I had to help when she cracked an egg onto the countertop and with a couple of final stirs to make sure everything was blended together well).
First she grated the zucchini, fresh-picked from our garden. Then she measured

and mixed, and poured it in the pan (with a little assistance from 4dd4.5- they were twins for the day).

Then it had to bake...for 50 minutes and that meant past bedtime, which meant no cake for dessert. She wasn't very happy about that, but it did taste yummy for breakfast!

It's a good thing dh got a piece before he went to work because I'm not sure there will be any left by the time he gets home. :)

Here's the recipe in case your dd wants to make it herself. It's my mom's
Zucchini Cake
2 cups flour
2cups sugar
1 tsp cinamon
2 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup vegetable oil
2tsp vanilla
3 eggs
Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix ingredients listed above together in a large bowl.
Add
2 cups grated zucchini
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Mix well. Pour into 9" X 13" pan. Bake for 350 F for 50 mintues.
Easy and a great way to eat your veggies! :)
Now while their sister was baking (and their dad and brother were at soccer practice), I let the younger two girls watch TV. It hasn't been on much at all lately. We have Cable and as I was searching through the Complimentary OnDemand shows, I saw the Smurfs listed. When I was a kid, we weren't allowed to watch the Smurfs. We weren't allowed to watch a lot of things actually, but the Smurfs was on the list, something about sorcery and such. The thing is that my mom was never awake on Saturday mornings to know what we were watching, so we watched the Smurfs many times even though we weren't supposed to (we also stole dingdongs and twinkies that were supposed to be for my dad's lunch...what are your kids doing while you sleep? Check under the couch and see if there's a stash of wrappers, I discovered one myself not to long ago.). Anyway, back to the Smurfs, my kids have never seen it, so I selected it and we began to watch, "Lazy's Nightmare." At the beginning Lazy Smurf is having nightmares and all the other smurfs are trying to help him and noone is getting any sleep. Then Lazy doesn't want to sleep any more because of the nightmares and the other smurfs have to get him to fall asleep. Once he does, he begins to have the nightmare again, but this time, the villain in his nightmare catches him before he can wake up and locks him in a cage, THEN the Smurfs are unable to wake him up and the villain is plotting to capture ALL of the Smurfs in their dreams....Needless to say we all agreed this was a "bad show" and we quickly switched to Dora the Explorer. The last thing I need is for my girls to get the idea that whatever happens in their nightmares can affect the things in real life, and if they get caught in their nightmares, they won't be able to wake up....and I could see the inevitable sorcery that Papa Smurf was going to have to resort to in order to free Lazy from the enchantment...So with all humility, as much as I thought my mother was ridiculous in her opposition to a bunch of cute little blue guys singing, "La, La, La, La, La, La, " I must now confess that, "MY MOTHER WAS RIGHT!" And I am her daughter.
Oh, and on a similar note, after the kids went to bed last night, I watched the last two-thirds of High School Musical for the first time, and I can say that my kids won't be watching it either! But thanks to all who told me it was harmless and innocent and whatnot, my husband and I happen to disagree, in fact his word for it was "inane" and "twaddle." That's my guy! :) |

I was never allowed to watch the smurfs and you are the first person I've ever heard who's parents wouldn't let them either! It's amazing how different your perspective is as the parent, there are so many things I wouldn't want my kids to watch/do that I watched/did as a kid.
...and the cake looks yummy and a lot healthier than the chocolate chip muffins I made for breakfast :) |

The cake looks good. Isn't that funny when we have to admit our moms were right? And I haven't seen the movie, but the commercials I saw I didn't think it would be to wholesome. Thanks for your honesty about it. :)

Umm, thanks for the yummy recipe. We're beginning a grated zucchini collection in our freezer. Yay that your daughter is learning to bake independently!
Wrappers under the couch? We routinely find them under our eldest son's bed or other choice hiding places. This week we have been really trying to crack down on his bad habit of helping himself to things and hiding his sin, and it has been a struggle!! Are any of your kids "strong willed" kids? Help!!

Hey girlfriend!
Well...
I got one puny zucchini off of 2 plants--period. Pathetic. Save ME some cake :)!!
I was never NOT allowed to watch. As a matter of fact, I distinctly remember telling my mother what SHE shouldn't watch. I was pretty much in front of the TV if awake & home from school. I don't remember much about the smufts except everyone trying to draw them. What was that about???
So remind me to ask you about HS musical. Haven't heard about that one. I'm so sheltered. heehee!
Love,
Me |

Hi. The cake looks good. In fact, I might just make it next time my mom brings me some. Along with my vegetarian lasagne rolls. Hmm, a full meal based on Zucs.
I didn't mind High School Musical, but I would agree with inane. |

Some of those old movies are tricky. Like The Flinstones. (we rented it a while back and there was a discussion of a wife killing off her husband for the insurance money, which leads Fred to worry that Wilma's going to off him....no joke!)
The cake turned out beautifully. Have you ever tried any frosting? As cake without frosting or icing....well, looks necked.
:)
I've never seen highschool musical, but my kids are gradeschool, so anything involving highschool aged kids I tend to avoid anyways. |

So glad I read your entry... I was going to watch High School Musical 2 today on the Disney channel because my kids are begging to see it. I haven't heard if it is good or bad. I'm very conservative with my television watching. So, reading your post, I'm probably not going to watch it! Thanks. I needed an honest posting.

Hi there! I really like your blog, after linking to it from duckygirl, nsremom, AND grace4gayle, who are my real life friends. I'm so glad I did! I've added you to my friends list......I'll check on you often!
My husband and I never take advice from our friends anymore on what to watch, after having to turn off more movies than we can count. We don't have cable or satelite, but we can watch videos and DVD's, and we are VERY VERY STRICT with what we let our 6 kids watch. We just have very different standards on so many things than some of our friends.......
If you want to, surf on over to my blog and browse a while. I hope we can be friends!

What a beautiful cake. Yummy!
And cake for breakfast is best.
About the smurfs...I try to discourage it and a lot of other shows.
High School Musical..personally I agree it is "twaddle". But other people tell me, oh it's innocent..there's no swearing, drinking or sex. They are/have watched it, but I discourage watching much teenage disney shows. In my experience they breed attitudes that are contrary to righteous living. Not immorality, but self-centered attitudes.
Again, I enjoyed your daughter's baking. The pictures are awesome.
Blessings,
Linda |

That zucchini cake sounds delicious!
I hope you'll still be my friend when I confess we've watched both HSM movies. We liked them and the fun music. I was glad to see in #2 that while it was summer and they were at the pool, there were no bikinis! I thought that was pretty amazing for this day and age. I appreciate that they are still attempting to make positive movies without the language and all the other stuff. I would say that like every tv show or movie out there, of course there are better things to do with your time, but when we're ready for inane twaddle, HSM comes through! :)

Thank you for the recipe. It sounds wonderful. And thanks for the opinion of Highschool Musical. We've avoided it so far and I think we will continue that pattern.

I love zucchini anything so that cake looks wonderful! I haven't done much baking with my children this summer and hope to get back to that soon. Can you imagine a day when one of your children will make something completely on their own without any assistance needed? At this moment, I can't but I know it is coming soon and I will enjoy a little break. :)
Your topic of the Smurfs is something my husband and I have been discussing lately. I did watch them as a child and so often I wish that my parents had been more strict in what I watched or paid attention more to if I didn't obey their rule for me not to listen to certain music, etc. Now I find that my mind if filled with things I rather it not be.
We have done the same thing in turning on a show we watched as a child thinking it couldn't be bad, after-all we watched it, only to say, what?!? and turn it off. It gets difficult at times when family members don't understand why we are strict with what we watch but the bible says in Phil. 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things." Most of what is on TV I do not consider to fall into those categories. I am thankful though to have learned the lesson of what we don't want filling the minds of our children!
Sorry so long! Maybe I'll have to blog about this topic. :) |

Looks like she had a lot of fun- Ellie can't wait until she is old enough to follow a recipe on her own. Noah also loves to "help" in the kitchen. I am going to have to try this recipe. We have gotten tons of zuchinni from the co-op this summer, and I am always up for a new recipe.
About the smurfs, I was at a restaurant this past weekend with my family and in-laws, and it was on the tv in the "kids' room" I loved the smurfs as a child, but have not seen them as an adult. I was unable to hear the dialogue, and was planning on renting them on netflix for my kids. Maybe I will preview it first. A great show we have been watching together as a family is Planet Earth. We get it through Netflix, and it is awesome, in the true sense of the word, displaying the beauty, wonder and majesty of God's creation in a way that causes you to be in awe of God as Creator, and worshlp him. The only thing is, you need to be ready to discuss the narrator's comments on evolution, which can be a good thing. |

The cake looks delicious. I think we'll try it!
We watched the smurfs when I was young, but I only remember vague impressions of Gargamel and the song, so I don't think I've been brainwashed...totally, har har. Anyway, I've never heard of HSM, which shows you how out of the pop culture loop we are. But that's ok with me.
I love how we can see out the windows of your house in the one photo you posted. It reminds me of our old stomping grounds in OH and is so serene and pretty. BIG SIGH...nostalgia. I liked the pace of midwestern life and the garden.
Keep writing!! |

That is seriously amazing...
...now come to think of it, I'm not sure which is more amazing, her baking the cake all by herself or the thought of letting her do it! I am mess-freakout-woman, and even more so with our house up for sale.
It was good to come by, I haven't been in quite awhile and lots has changed. I love all the pictures you have up! cool.
