Jan. 3, 2008 - Sour What?

This evening was my first attempt at a Pennsylvania Dutch New Years' culinary tradition: Pork and Sauerkraut.  My husband's family is all PA Dutch (Deutsch=German), and I've acquired a taste for this dish over the years.  I was doubtful that the kids would appreciate it; nonetheless, each child was required to eat a small "no thank you portion."   After a couple of bites, 4dd4 announced quite emphatically, "I am NOT going to eat another bite of Pork and Sour Crap!  I am never going to eat Pork and Sour Crap again in my life!"  She'd been refering to it as Sour Crap repeatedly throughout the meal, and persisted in doing so even after correction.  It wasn't intentional.  I don't think she really knows what crap is, and it's a word that's used in our home only occassionaly; she truly couldn't pronounce kraut.  Regardless, each time she said Sour Crap it became more difficult to keep a straight face.  (And I really didn't want to encourage her by laughing!  All I need is for Sour Crap to be added to the kids vernacular!)

Later, after the incentive of Chocolate Chocolate Chip Banana Bread was offered for those who finished their dinner, she came running into the kitchen gleefully announcing, "I've finished my dinner!  I ate up all my Sour Crap!  I LOVE Sour Crap now!  I love it even more than PIZZA!!!"  "Really?  More than pizza?!?!" I questioned.  "Yes," she responded with that certain lilt in her voice which means, I know it's hard to believe, but it's TRUE!  You have no idea how it warms my heart to hear that my daughter has now acquired a taste for Sour Crap!  What about you?  Are you fond of Sour Crap?  We've got plenty!  Come on over!

That's hysterical! I love Sour Crap! Kenny's stepmom is PA Dutch and always had that for New Year's Day dinner. We happened to eat out on 1-01 this year and only too late did I think that we should have hunted down some pork & sauerkraut. Wonder if they serve that on NYDay as far south as VA? Guess I'll have to wait till '09 to find out.

I'm not big on sour crap but I just might be willing to try it if I can hear her say it!

I am still laughing! Hilarious.
I LOVE sour crap, too. Not more than pizza, but I really do love it. When I was pregnant with Shelby, I actually CRAVED it all the time. We ate so many ruebens and pork and saurkraut dishes for those few months. Poor Scott.

My musuem membership expires in March, so we MUST meet up before then!!!

Well, I'm pretty sure you know how I stand on the issue! heehee This is very funny stuff.

Thanks for your prayers. Boy is doing better today--his neck hurts. He does say everything feels like he's in a dream. Not sure what that means. I'll keep you posted.

I hope we can get together soon!
Blessings,
Melissa

We had a similar discussion over collard greens--- but neither of these words rhyme with anything funny. They just had to get over eating "melted leaves." Smiles and happy New Year!

I like it alright, but my 3dc Olivia, Loves it. She eats it almost every day. I buy it from our local farmer's market; it is homemade by some PA Dutch folks. Authentic!!!

I love sour crap. I like it cold & hot. My step father is from KY and they eat pickled bologna there. He always has some at our Christmas gatherings to put on crackers. My son tried it for the first time this year. He almost threw up. I've never made Ashley try it, b/c once when we were at a baby shower, I had her try some chicken salad, b/c there was nothing else there that I thought she'd like. She loves chicken, so I thought, 'Okay, she may like this.' She threw up instantly. So embarrasing. Hope you have a great week.

Blessings,
Lori

Jan. 7, 2008 - I'm on my way over for some sour crap.....

Posted by stillgrowing
I absolutely adore sour crap! I just never make it around here because my husband would probably vomit! He's not big on fragrant dishes! But I love meat loaf with it, steak with it, chicken with it, almost anything with it!

Of course you know that Emily, Cindy and Gayle are all together in real life right now......I'm getting over it. I'm adjusting. Someday I would like to get together with you, Marsha, Cindy, Chickadee, Emily, Gayle, etc and fellowship together........there's one hang up and that's that my husband has to come along because he couldn't let me go on a plane by myself ever. There's too much risk. But he's so awesome and so great to be around and you all can bring your husbands and they can all talk all night too......

Love the sour crap post!

Jan. 7, 2008 - Sour Crap

Posted by Mason Moments Mom
In our family Mason Moments and I like it. My husbands mom made it by cooking it with brown sugar and he likes it that way. Being German, I love it straight up, but put it on mashed potatoes. That's what my family always did. Cut's the sour I guess. My husband has to put his own brown sugar on it. Maybe they'd like it that way.

Really I do I love sour crap on Hotdogs and in Cabbage rolls I do like pork ribs and sour crap, but in Maryland (which as you know is close to PA) they eat Neck bones and sour crap and I do NOT like neckbones and sour crap. I really like Amish pepper cabbage too which tastes a bit like sour crap.

And I am wondering since she is four what she would think of Purple Sweet and sour cabbage? After all it is purple and tastes like sourcrap..... hee hee!

Thanks for the giggle.
