In case you haven't heard, NSREMom is having the Best. Contest. Ever. It was no small feat to gather the pictures necessary to participate, but I must say that I've never had so much fun putting a post together!!! So, thanks, Emily!
For contest rules and explanation go here, to see the other entries, go here. I apologize for the messiness caused by scanning the photos. I did my best.
My entry begins with a picture that I hope will earn extra credit: My mom in her home-made maternity clothes (spiffy, huh?). After 3 long years of waiting and 2 miscarriages, she is finally expecting ME! Although I was due to be born on October 31st, I made her wait until November 24th, and she still had to endure a painful inducement. Here she is in August of 1974 at 6 months.
Next is a picture of me at the hospital with my daddy. Nice glasses!
I love this picture of me and my mom in January of 1975. I should have had a copy of it to pull out during those rocky teen years when I doubted her love for me! Of special interest is my grandparent's fabulous davenport (and yes, my grandpa actually called it that!). Another reason I love this picture is because it was taken just days after my dad became a Christian. No wonder we're so happy! :)
Here I am at 3 months. I am confident that my parents still possess every single one of the albums pictured here, and some of that stereo equipment too!
By 4 months of age, they called me "Moose." After 4 kids and countless half-gallons of ice cream, I'm working on reproducing these rolls. Too bad they're not so cute 33 years later! Please note the old-fashioned cloth diapers, the same kind I used on all of my own kids. No fancy-pants diaper covers or diaper services for us! I've earned bonus points for that alone. That's what I'm saying!
Skip ahead to my 1st birthday. My mom is so pretty! She made this adorable outfit for me! I love the eyeliner, and she might even be wearing fake eyelashes.
My mom wants bonus points for this picture! She hand-sewed this outfit (as in without a sewing machine) including all the rickrack flowers which she created herself. If only she would have passed on a fraction of her craftiness to her eldest daughter.
Here is a family portrait in 1977. I had to include it on account of my dad's jacket and tie. For as long as I can remember, my mom almost always had beautifully manicured nails with dark polish. I, on the other hand, didn't even manage to get a manicure before my wedding and was embarassed when the photographer wanted to take a picture of the rings!
This is my 3rd birthday party. You can't see me very well (on the couch, blue dress), but here is my little sister wearing my first birthday dress. I really tried to find a picture with macrame, but am hoping that my mom's matching leather boots & purse, plaid kilt (probably homemade), and big glasses earn me a couple of points. This photo was taken in our apartment in W Berlin, E Germany. The lighthouse picture, and the Jesus picture were transfered to my childhood home 27 years ago and remain to this day on my parents' dining room wall.
Finally, here I am at about 8 years old with 2 of my sisters and a new litter of kittens. I'm sure my sister and Emily would get along swell. (Hey, Emily, that blanket behind me is crocheted, that's kinda close to macrame, and check out the wallpaper!)
So that's a bit of my baby and early childhood days. I'll have to save the bad hair day, teenage pictures of me in more homemade dresses for another post. Thanks again for the great contest, Em! I've had tons of fun sharing a bit of my baby days and childhood with you and checking out all the other fun pictures!
Let me know if you decide to join the fun! It's the best thing that's hit the blogosphere in...ages!
Grace and Peace,
Angel |
