Insanity Runs in My Family...It Practically Gallops!

Monday, May 18, 2009 - What Does the Bible Say About That?

Welcome to another edition of Crossway Book Blog Reviews! I hope you will enjoy reading about this edition's book called What Does the Bible Say About That?. As always, I encourage you to check out the Crossway Blog at http://www.crossway.org/blog/. Thanks!

What Does the Bible Say About That?

Carolyn Larsen, the author of this book, took on a monumental task when she began the writing of the book. The book, geared for 8-12 year olds, is a collection of short writings on several topics, explaining exactly what a Biblical perspective of these topics are.  As you can imagine, the topics that are discussed are numerous--from topics such as sin, death, and hell that we all struggle with, and topics that are particularly of interest to the younger set--such as movies, siblings,  homework, and classmates.

Ms. Larsen does a wonderful job of explaining each of these topics. She presents a scripture that is related to the topic, then explains in her own words the Biblical position on the said issue. Finally, each entry is concluded by giving the issue some practicability--showing the child how he learn an applicable lesson on how to deal with the issue.

This book is a great reference for children, and parents will welcome it as a great devotional starter. One note--because this book is geared towards 8-12 year olds, there are some topics that may not be as appropriate for the younger ones. But parents can use discernment in employing this book with their own children, and are sure to find many Biblical lessons covered between the covers of this dynamic little book.

While I don't have children yet, I can imagine that this is exactly the sort of thing I would love to use with my own kids one day. It is easy to use, practical, clear, concise, and most importantly, Biblical. I encourage parents of older elementary children to check this book out as a viable way of giving their children a spiritual head start in life.

I can't believe I haven't visited your blog in so long. And now I do, and I find all these great posts!

First thing I have to say: I LOVE "TALE OF TWO CITIES!!!!! Sorry. Ok, got that over with. That is my all-time favorite Dickens.

I loved the pictures from VA. It looks like you visited some really nice places! We used to live in Norfolk. So, you're going to PHC? That's so cool. Arya is going to a debate camp there this summer. She's VERY excited.

Your book list for the month was very impressive! I have only been working on two books for the last couple weeks. "Little Dorrit" by Dickens, and "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoevsky. I am really enjoying The Brothers "K". Little Dorrit is a little slow because I have already seen the movie, so the mysteriousness has kind've lost it's hold on me :-)

I hope you're having a nice week!

In Christ,
Christine

Hey again. I haven't been on here in forever, I'm so sorry! I've been crazy busy.
I finally finished Pride and Prejudice. It was......amazing! Of course.
We've been watching through the Star Wars again!!! Yay! Again I say that my favorite is 'The Empire Strikes Back.' It's so good!
I know, some day I'll watch the Twilight movie.
We recently watched 'You Can't Take It With You,' again. You've seen that, right?
Have you seen a movie called, 'Tom, Dick and Harry?'

That's fine. I'm sure you're extremely busy getting ready for college! That is so cool that you will be going to Patrick Henry. I'm sure my sister would love to have a tour :-) My family and I would love to see it as well! That is neat that you went to one of their camps as well. Arya's been looking forward to this camp for a looooong time! She really loves doing debate. She called last night to tell us about some of the people they met and she said "Mom it's right up my alley. All that they ever talk about is speech and debate!". Lol. She's having a great time.

Christine

Thanks for the comment. We were really excited for Arya. You should have seen us on Friday waiting for the results at home. Our club leader knew someone in TAB so she kept calling us saying "They're in quarters!, semifinals!, etc." We were very happily surprised that she made it to finals. The other team won on a 6-5 decision. Actually, as far as I know, Courney C. is planning on doing one year of online courses and then heading to PHC. But still, you could possibly all be there at the same time! That would be so cool.

I will be praying for you! I am getting mine out at this oral surgery clinic. There are three doctors, I just remember that the one doing mine is called Dr. Walzer. Where are you getting yours done? I'm not sure if they do it on base or not.

I hope all your college preparations are going GREAT!

In Christ,
Christine
