Online Learning - What have I learned?

Building an Online Community - Technology Issues
Time4Learning already has a great parents homeschool forum. It's booming and useful. It remains focused on issues about using (yes/no) or how how to use Time4Learning. Sometimes, what to use it with.
We are looking at creating at least two new communities.
1. Kids. Our students would like to be able to have their own online community.
2. A grown-up community focused on how parents educate their children in an electronic age. Focused on the benefits and limits of using technology. Most importantly, what is real education?
Systems & Technology
Drupal - Kris has a great impementation up and running. Very impressive.
http://www.21publish.com - I just stumpled upon these people. It looks good.
Bloghost.com is the engine behind the homeschoolblogger technology which, coupled with a powerful sponsor like the Old Schoolhouse, has produced a winner.
Wordpress & Blogger are obvious choices although I'm not sure how builds a community.
Joomla - We've some experience with this and so far, are not enthralled.
phpBBB - A perfectly solid forum system although we've never managed to modify the URLS to be spider-friendly.
Elluminate has alot of stuff and since they are neighbors, we should visit and check them out. |
