I was really proud of Boyzer the other day. He received an invitation to a birthday party next week. It sounds like a fun party. Some of his best buddies are going to be there and they are all going to a comedy show that evening.
He was so excited until he got to the date on the invite. The party is on the same day and time of his choir concert. Wow! I could tell by the look on his face that he was crestfallen. Yet, without any prompting from me, he declared to his little sister that he couldn't go because he had a concert that night and he had promised his choir director that he would be there. It was a hard decision for him, and not without a few tears, but one he made very quickly.
I told him later how proud I was of him. It's not easy to see your child disappointed in what life gives him. I wanted to make it better and find a way that he could do both, yet I couldn't. A choice had to be made and he decided to do what was right. He had already made a commitment, and even though he would rather have done something different, he remained faithful to his word. That speaks loudly to me of his developing character, and gives me a little glimpse of what he'll be like as a grown man facing much harder decisions than this. |
