Blue Like Play Dough GIVEAWAY!!

Posted in Contests
I have a copy of Blue Like Play Dough: the shape of motherhood in the grip of God by Tricia Goyer to give away right here on my blog. (Read my review here.)  I was thinking of ways to dress up this giveaway, other things to include, etc -- and then I decided to just keep it simple.

To enter, just leave a comment here on my blog.

I'd love it if you spread the word to others.  So if you blog about it, or pass the word on in some way (email, facebook, twitter, whatever), leave a second comment to let me know.  This will earn you a second entry.

Please include an email address or blog URL so I can let you know if you win.

If you're reading this in my Notes on Facebook, please come to my blog (http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/elcloud) to enter.  That just keeps it simple for me.

I'll draw a random winner on August 10, 2009 at noon (or shortly thereafter).  Then I'll contact the winner for their mailing address and mail the book out for them to enjoy.

Take joy,
April

I won ... books!!

Posted in Contests
Last month, Judy W from Growing Students Who Love To Learn was having a bookshelf contest.  She wanted people to send pictures of their bookshelves in, for a chance to win a packet of books.

I sent in this picture of one of our bookshelves in the living room.  My Dad built me this bookshelf, and then he and Steve built me a wider version, as well.  This particular bookshelf holds my favorite parenting books, homeschool support books, some old Hardy Boys books, and many more books (including mine and Steve's old yearbooks on the bottom shelf).

As you can see, it's double-shelved on every single shelf except the top one.  But even on the top shelf, I have books laying across the top of the other books.  You can't see the bottom shelf in this picture because a wooden doll house sits in front of it and blocks the view.

Anyway, to get to the point,  I won!   I don't know which books I won, but I can't wait to receive them and try to squeeze them onto one of our seven overstuffed bookshelves!  (they aren't all as big as this one)

Trusting in Him,
April

The winner of Enduring Justice Is ...

Posted in Contests
Well, this morning I woke up and my daughter had left her little doggie "A" post it notes next to the computer, so they came in handy for choosing the contest winner.

I then got out this lovely floral pitcher I once won at an auction for a very very low price.  I was so excited and couldn't figure out why no one bid against me, until it was handed to me and I saw the cracked and glued pitcher spout.  But it is still lovely and I use it for a vase, holding bunches of flowers from our yard.  I later discovered that if it hadn't been damaged, it would have been worth something.  But with flowers in it, you can't see the damage, and I love it!

I set it onto my stovetop, and put the three entries into it.

And the winner is ...

Congratulations, Danielle!  I'll email you for your mailing address.

April

Giveaway: $30 gift certificate to Good For The Kids store!!

Posted in Contests
THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED!!

(This post will stay at the top of my blog until April 26, 2009, when the contest ends.

To see new posts, scroll down.)

Please read the contest rules!  I have had to delete multiple comments that didn't include an email address/URL to contact them, and that didn't include the name of an item from the Good For The Kids website.  Read the rules if you want your entry to count!

Angie, owner of  Good For The Kids web-store is letting me host a giveaway for a $30 gift certificate to her store!  If you haven't been to her store before, I promise you will be pleased with all she has to offer in the way of educational toys, and safe products for babies and children.

I love giving my children educational toys.  I prefer the old-fashioned toys that don't flash and whir and whizz and talk to you.  We have electronic educational toys in our home, but they aren't the foundation of our toy collection.  The less "bells and whistles" a toy has, the more it allows our children to use their imagination and creativity.  A toy may teach the ABC's and colors to your child, but if it can only be used in one way ... it won't inspire their imagination or creativity.  Sometimes education is messy, at least educational play can be messy!  But it is priceless and the mess is temporary.

In my opinion, educational toys are ones that:
  • Build Creativity -- toys and craft supplies that inspire creative play, crafts, or art
  • Promote Imagination -- toys that involve your children's imaginations
  • Inspire Storytelling -- toys that inspire your children to act out stories and create their own stories
  • Encourage Problem Solving -- toys that challenge children to solve puzzles
  • Develop Innovative Thinking -- toys that allow children to build and experiment
  • Teach New Concepts -- toys that teach our children important concepts
One of my favorite companies that creates educational toys is Melissa & Doug.  The Melissa & Doug toys not only meet my qualifications of an educational toy, but they are also well-made, colorful, safe and sturdy.

We have their wooden peg puzzles, their wooden 25 piece jig saw puzzles, their wooden 40 piece jig saw puzzles, their magnetic activity sets, their dress up toys, their mini jigsaw wooden puzzle sets, a 200 piece wooden jig saw puzzle, their musical instruments, their Pound A Peg toy, their Grasping Caterpillar toy, and some of their cardboard jigsaw puzzles.  We've given their toys to our nieces and nephew, as well as our own children.

When I first went to the Good For The Kids website, I immediately zoned in on the fact that she sells Melissa & Doug toys.  I could spend hours browsing through the Melissa & Doug products!  (Not to mention all the other great items Angie sells for our children!)

YOU have the chance to win a $30 gift certificate to Good For The Kids from Angie.  Then you'll be able to shop, and not just browse through her wonderful store yourself.   And while you're there looking around, go ahead and create a wishlist to share with your friends and families before the next birthday or gift-giving holiday rolls around.  And don't forget to bookmark Angie's website so you can go back again and again, to shop for your family and your friends.

And now for the giveaway!

Contest Rules:
  • You can enter multiple times, but only once per day per type of entry.
  • There are several ways to enter, and you can enter using each one, but only once a day per type.
  • If your entry comment doesn't include a product, and your number is drawn, we'll draw a new winner.
  • Any entry that does not include an email or blog URL will be deleted.  I must be able to contact the winner, but I will not be adding you to an email list, or anything.  The sole reason for the email/URL is to contact the winner.  I will not sell it, give it away, or use it to annoy you.  You will need to type your URL or email address into your comment, because the form doesn't have a slot for them.  You can use text to enter your email address such as "busyfolk at gmail dot com" in your comment..
How to Enter (only one entry of each type allowed per day):
  • 1st way to enter -- REQUIRED:  Browse Good For The Kids website and leave a comment here telling me what item you'd buy with your gift certificate, or which Melissa & Doug toy at Good For The Kids is your favorite.  Remember ... if you win and your comment doesn't mention a product by name from the website, we'll draw another winner.  And if you enter this way on different days, please list a different item.  Don't say the exact same thing each time.
  • 2nd way to enter -- optional: Post about the contest on your blog and then list the URL in your comment here.
  • 3rd way to enter -- optional:  Include a picture of your children in the midst of educational play in your blog post about the contest
  • 4th way to enter -- optional:  If you don't have a blog, you can email a friend about the contest and Carbon Copy Me in the email
Who can enter?
  • Anyone over 18 years of age, worldwide.
  • You do not need to have a blog to enter.
  • You do not have to be a homeschoolblogger member, just use the Anonymous function and put your name and email address or URL in your comment.
When will the contest end?
  • The contest will end on April 26, 2009 at 11:59 pm EDT.
  • The winners will be drawn using Random.org on April 27, 2009 and announced by April 28, 2009 ... barring an emergency such as surgery, an electrical outage, or a death in the family!  I'll do my best to post a winner as soon as possible after April 28, but you can't sue me if I'm a little late.
  • I will contact the winner and notify them that they have won.

Thank you, Angie, for the great giveaway!  Good luck, everyone!

Trusting in Him,
April

Homeschool Share Blast Contest!

Posted in Contests
If you haven't heard of Homeschool Share (also known as HSS), they have a great collection of free unit studies and lapbooks, created by other homeschool Moms just like you.  I've used a few of their unit studies (Curious George was lots of fun!) and we're getting ready to do a Nim's Island unit study from Homeschool Share once we finish our Crew reviews.

Well, it's Homeschool Share Blast 2009 time.  This is when they hold a contest for new unit study submissions.  They're giving out prizes for the best unit study (or lapbook) in 8 different categories, as well as honorable mentions.  They have some great prize sponsors, including The Old Schoolhouse magazine, CurrClick, and Homeschool In The Woods

If you've always wanted to try to write your own unit study, now's your chance!  If you're an "old hat" at writing unit studies for your kids, join in the fun!  Although we've used unit studies in the past, and I've "rowed" non-Five In A Row books with my kids in a very unplanned manner, I've never written a complete unit study.  But, I'm hoping to finish one up to enter!

Go check out the contest details and the list of prize sponsors at the Homeschool Share Blast contest page

If you don't want to submit a unit study or lapbook, be sure to check the HSS website later this year to see all the great new items that are submitted during the contest.

Here it is! My 1000th comment contest!!

Posted in Contests
Now that I'm actually at 1012 comments, I'm finally able to post my contest!  I'm sorry I didn't get it posted last week.  I didn't think about how close I was to 1000 when I signed up for the Ultimate Blog Party.  Then, comment 1000 actually arrived while I was out bridesmaid dress shopping with my sisters 4 hours away.  I came home the next day, but my parents and 2 sisters came with me.  I try to limit my computer time when I have guests, so I couldn't post it then.

But they're gone now, so I can take pictures and post my contest.  There are going to be several prizes, and 3 winners!

Winner #1
will receive a lovely brown, pink, and multi-colored stripe half-apron for garden or kitchen use, along with their choice of 1 out of 3 Spring wall hangings I made,  inspired by Molly Green!

Winner #2 will get their choice of the remaining 2 Spring wall hangings.  If they want it, they will also receive a copy (used) of Raising Happy Kids On A Reasonable Budget

Winner #3
will get the last Spring wall hanging, and possibly the Raising Happy Kids On A Reasonable Budget if winner #2 didn't want it.

I love this Mumz apron.  I bought several of them when I found it on sale.  One for me, and several more to give away as gifts.  Besides it's bright colors, it has handy pockets and a sturdy fabric.  If you use it outdoors, it has a natural bug repellent in the fabric, made from chrysanthemums.  Raising Happy Kids on a Reasonable Budget was one of several books I've gleaned from as a Mom living on a budget.

Molly Green
showed me how to make this in the February issue of Molly's Money Saving Digest.  I made several of them at once, in different colors.  Then my family chose which one we'd keep and which we'd give away.

Here's a closer view of one of the wall hangings.  One is a turquoise floral print with chocolate brown and pink layers.  One is blue with a white floral print layer and then the pink.  The other is a pink abstract layer with a blue abstract layer and the pink again.

If my secret sister at church finds this blog somehow, I'm going to be "found out".  I gave her an apron and a wall-hanging already this year.  Oops!

How do you enter?
  1. Post a comment HERE, with your email address or blog URL!
  2. For a second entry, blog about this contest and post another comment with the link to your post HERE.
Who can enter?
  • Anyone over 18 years of age in the United States.
When will the contest end?
  • The contest will end on April 10, 2009 at 11:59 pm CST.
  • The winners will be drawn using Random.org on April 11, 2009 and announced by April 12, 2009 ... barring any unforeseen circumstances like a child breaking a leg climbing a tree, or the basement flooding, or well, you get the picture!  I'll do my best to post a winner as soon as possible after April 10, but you can't sue me if I'm a little late.
If I forgot anything I should have explained, please leave a comment and let me know.  Thanks for reading my blog, and good luck!

Two Great Blog Giveaways, and 4 Great Blogs to Enjoy!

Posted in Contests
Well, I was over at Sheri: 1 of 100's TOS Crew Review Blog, because she gave me an award (which I'll post about later).  And I looked at her friends list.  Well, We Are THAT Family jumped out at me.  So I spent over an hour browsing the THAT Family blog yesterday.  Wow!  I think we are THAT family, too.  "You know the ones ..."
And then I saw a blog linky thing (those pictures you click on, whose name just totally eluded me) that caught my eye again.  A Soft Place To Land, because I have friends who talk about being a soft place for their husbands to land.  I have no idea where that phrase originated, but it caught my eye.  So I went to her blog this morning ... and Kimba's having a GIVEAWAY!  It's for a great book by Jeanne Winters entitled, "Inspirational Home.  Go HERE to enter before 2/20/09!

A Soft Place To Land

Also, Kimba pointed out that Jeanne Winters has a blog, and is also doing a giveaway of 5 items to 5 people!  So go HERE to enter before 2/27/09!
Inspiring Ideas Simply Inspiring by Jeanne Winters
Anyway, besides the giveaways, these are 4 great blogs by 4 Christian ladies, and you'll enjoy reading them.  Have fun, and don't get lost in the blogosphere. following links endlessly.  Wander back out to take care of your family ... otherwise your 2 yo might paint your table with glue, or color all the way down the hallway wall, or melt the end of your vacuum cleaner crevice tool.  Ask me how I know.

And the Peterson Handwriting winners are ...

Posted in Contests

First, this is the "sophisticated" way we selected our winners.  We made a chart with 3 columns, each labeled for K, 2, or 4.  Then we went through the entries in order and wrote them in the appropriate column.  Then we numbered the entries within each column.  We had 8 entries for K level, 6 entries for level 2, and 8 entries for level 4.

We then went to http://www.random.org/integers/  and we had it randomly draw a number between 1 and 8 for the K level, between 1 and 6 for the level 2, and between 1 and 8 for the level 4.  Then, back to our list, where we found the appropriate number in each column!

After that probably totally unnecessary explanation which was provided in the interest of fairness, and so everyone would know we didn't just choose our favorite people, although you have to take our word for that, of course.     Anyway ... after all of that ... the winners are:

For the Level K program, Tina Cherney!

For the Level 2 program, Jesusismyjoy!

For the Level 4 program, SuperAngel!

Per the contest rules, I'll be notifying the winners by email.  If they don't respond to me with their mailing addresses within a week, I'll draw a new winner for that level by the same "sophisticated" method described above.

Trusting in Him,
April

Peterson Directed Handwriting Contest!

Posted in Contests
This will be at the top of my blog until the end of the contest.  Scroll down for new blog entries between now and January 12.

I'm giving away the Peterson Directed Handwriting curriculum we tested.  I have 3 levels and I'd love to see them go to 3 different families, so others can try this curriculum with their families, as well.

I have level K, 2, and 4.  Although when we received it, we chose to use them with the 2nd, 4th, and 8th graders instead.  The 8th grader tested the 4th-8th grade cursive curriculum, because I knew my 4th grader wasn't ready for that.  The 4th grader tested the 2nd grade level which transitions into cursive.  My 2nd grader tested the K level for me, because he can always use the extra practice.

Level K set includes:
  • a 3 sided fat pencil (not the ones sold by Peterson's because we sharpened and used those),
  • the Animated Letter Cards cd-rom,
  • 2 position guides for your desk tops,
  • Get Ready for Writing and Reading:  Lessons Plans for Teachers and Parents of Preschoolers and Kindergarteners,
  • the ABC's and 123's workbook. (This workbook was used, but we are erasing the pencil marks.  It can still be used for finger tracing, which is an important element of Peterson Directed Handwriting.   You could choose to use it for writing practice as well, or you can just use it to get an idea of the program and order a new one for yourself.)
Level 2 set includes:
  • a three-sided finger positioning black pencil (normal thickness)
  • We Write to Read Teacher Handbook, Grade 2
  • 2 position guides for your desk tops
  • We Write To Read Level Two: Getting Ready for Cursive student booklet (not written in, used for finger tracing, and then lessons are written on separate paper)
Level 4 set includes:
  • a Peterson Directed Handwriting, hand-positioning erasable ink pen
  • We Write To Read Teacher Handbook, Grades 4-8: Advanced Cursive Handwriting
  • 2 position guides for your desktops
  • We Write To Read Level Four:  Learning To Work With Adult Tools (not written in, used for finger tracing, and then lessons are written on separate paper)
Because Level 2 and 4 are not used for tracing or writing in, they are completely reusable with future students.

Each set will also come with something for the Mommy/Teacher.  The Mom gift in each package includes:
  • Mrs. Grossman's primary-colored party balloons and confetti scrapbook stickers (several sheets)
  • 1 Christmas poinsettia tea towel
  • 1 pine tree finger towel
  • 1 Colonial at Home Fresh Strawberry Rhubarb tea candle
  • 1 de-luxe  brand Aloe Vera and Glycerin Foaming Body Scrub (each a different scent)
  • 1 Burt's Bees product (either a tin of hand salve, a tin of lip balm, or a small jar of hand creme)
  • 1 Recycled Ideas note card made of handmade paper with seeds embedded which can be planted to grow flowers

Because of the holidays, I'm going to let this be a longer contest, ending three weeks from today, on January 12, 2009.

To Enter:
  • Enter by leaving a comment below, telling me which level you'd like to win.
  • Include your email address or your blog URL in your entry comment, or be logged into your HSB account so it links directly to your blog.
  • Gain a second entry by posting the link to the contest on your blog, then posting the direct link to that blog post in a new comment here.

Contest Rules:
  • You must be at least 18 years of age to enter.
  • You must live in the U.S., or Canada.
  • You do not have to be a blogger to enter, just include your email address in your comment.
  • You do not have to have an HSB account to enter, just choose anonymous, but leave your name and email address in your comment.
  • This contest ends January 12, 2009.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly from within the level they requested.  In other words, we'll be drawing 1 name each from 3 different hats.
  • Winners will be announced on January 13, 2009.
  • Contest winners will be notified by email, or by a comment on their blog.
  • If after one week a winner doesn't reply to the notification email or comment, a new winner will be chosen.
So, tell your friends, and don't forget to enter for a chance to win one of 3 levels of Peterson Directed Handwriting.

Trusting in Him,
April
