New Day

Posted in On The Farm

Well today is Monday and my son is on Spring Vacation from Public School. And I"m SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad. I got to sleep in, I'm not a 6am morning person. 8am is more like it....lol.

But I got up, got dressed and put my little yappy dogs out(as my dh would call them) Then I had to get my boots and coat on to put the horses out, as dad hadn't gotten to it yet. BUT we both were headed outside at the same time.....lol.

Last night we had decided we needed to split up the horses. All winter we had all them together, that included the Stallion. Well we need more control over breeding. As we lost too many babies this past year. So we are taking a new approach on things.

We put the 3 boys together. That's 2 Geldings and the Stallion. Then all the mares together. This way we can take the Mares to the stallion when they need to be bred. Just not now. Because if any got pg right now, they would be due in Feb. And we'd prefer to have the foals any time after May. Basically Between May and August would be ideal. Warmer weather for them to grow in and no worries about it getting too cold for them.

Well I was filling up two tubs for water, for the boys and wouldn't you know it. One of the geldings come over to check out the water and the stallion got a wild hair and ran him across the corrall they were in, proceeding to run his own butt into a pole that holds up a lean too area. Then still continuted to run the same gelding towards me, Well not directly I was about 8 feet from the part of the fence he ran him into. Yup that's right Diego, the Stallion ran the one gelding into the panel fence making him FLIP over onto the other side, and Diego followed.

Man I was LESS then thrilled. He ran him full force over that fence. Poor Cutter, the gelding, he was born crippled. A hip displacement or something like that. So he's not the regular runner. He was brought to us for us to try and mend his one leg that got wrapped up in a rope. But it was too late, We couldn't get the swelling to completly go away. And in the end my mom bought him. So he's got a great home. Grated you can't ride him and a lot of people would have gotten rid of him. But it is possible to have a couple horses you can't ride and just enjoy and spoil them......LOL.

We only have 2 that had been injured and we just spoil them 2 more :) The rest are rideable. So 2 out of 13 isn't bad.

Anyway dad and I got the fence fixed and the boys back where they belong. Its obvious we have a few mares in heat. But like I said now is not the time.....lol.

So let's just hope that Diego doesn't run the boys anymore. I'm generally here alone most days, and its not the easiest thing to deal with.

My kiddos want us to get horses so bad, and every now and then my husband talks about it... but we need fencing and shelter and they cost more than the horses would! There are some breeders right up the road from us that invited us over to meet the horses and learn about them, and maybe ride them... that sounds like fun, just waiting for the weather to warm up!

the fencing and shelter do cost more. We got lucky and already had the stuff from when my parent's milked cows. They are a lot of fun. And hey if you can get down the road, enjoy the animals. I hear ya about waiting on the weather. Me too, I can't wait to get back out riding the horses again.

About Me

Everyday ramblings about my family life, with my husband and son, on the farm. I'm Emily, mom to one son who I'll refer to as CJ. Married for 12 years been together almost 14 years. We live in North Central, Minnesota in the boonies. We are on our 4th year in Homeschooling and its been fun and a great descision. Sometimes my posts will relate to personal issues I'm dealing with while trying to give my son the best education I can. We've tried several things along this short journey of ours and hoping somethings will stay or we'll find things that work better soon.
