PLEASE READ ~ Books for 8 year old boys

Posted in Books or Movies

I need HELP in searching for books, Please read and pass on suggestions.

Alrighty, I'm seeking suggestions for books for my 8 yr old son, he'll be 9 in Sept. He loves books. Whether they are books I read to him or he reads on his own.

I used to read the Magic Treehouse Books too him but he took over reading. BUT he's not reading at this time.

So I'd love to give books for him to read then talk about and for me to read books to him.

So any and ALL suggestions please pass them on, there are so many kinds of books out there and just curious to what others his age on HSB are reading.

Thanks for suggestions.

Billy and Blaze books by?? We found them at the library. I wish I could remember the author. I'm sorry. Anyway, it's a series of short books about a boy and his horse. They could be read in one sitting. Not a chapter book, but not dumbed down reading either. They are black and white, but the illustrations are awesome! My son loved MTH books too and took to these horse stories just fine.
Henry and Mudge, Grandpa and Gus,Frog and Toad...are easier reading. We have heard things about Hank the Cowdog, but when I read some out of one of the books, it seemed "sassy" and a lot like a Junie B. book. Not entirely wholesome.
Both our kids LOVED the Abeka readers. They can be found at Half Price books and used HS stores. They have books on through fourth grade level. Most books are a series of stories. My dd is in first and is reading through them now. Good wholesome and engaging stories. My kids never thought of them as "readers".
You could also go Charlotte Mason...type in "twadle free books" and you'll come up with some good reading lists for each age group. Hope this helps.

Ok, I have 3 girls, so I'm draing a blank on books for boys :)
This Series is by Gary Paulsen we got it on tape from the library, and enjoyed every minute of it. main charcter is a boy
Subject: Adventure, Indians, Gold, Mountain Men, Wagon Train
1Mr. Tucket
2Call Me Francis
3Tucket's Ride
4Tucket's Gold
5Tucket's Home

Subject: Funny
Hang the Cow Dog series

Subject: Mysterys,

I Like getting them into a series, you don't have to look for reading material right away again. The afore mentioned Billy and Blaze Series is written by C.W. Anderson the artwork is amazing!!

My boys enjoyed the Hardy Boys series at that age. The older versions are better if you can find copyrights prior to 1972 at your library. The newer ones are PC and have dumbed down vocabulary, IMO.

I agree that Hank the Cowdog can be a bit on the "sassy" side, but I would predict your son would love them, so check them out and see how they register for you.

Along the lines of the Magic Treehouse Series, and not unlike Harry Potter, are the Secrets of Droon series and the Dragonslayers Academy series. The Geronimo Stilton series is also fun and colorful, and not "magic" oriented.

If Magic Treehouse books are getting too easy, all the Roald Dahl books are great fun, but can also be sassy, gross, and creepy. That delights our family (well, not the sassy, but in his books the sassy characters tend to be the bad ones, whereas in a Junie B. everyone is sassy), but again everyone has their own tolerance level for such things.

We have Ben and Me on our reading list for the year (subtitle: An Astonishing Life of Benjamin Franklin by His Good Mouse Amos).

Have fun!

About Me

Everyday ramblings about my family life, with my husband and son, on the farm. I'm Emily, mom to one son who I'll refer to as CJ. Married for 12 years been together almost 14 years. We live in North Central, Minnesota in the boonies. We are on our 4th year in Homeschooling and its been fun and a great descision. Sometimes my posts will relate to personal issues I'm dealing with while trying to give my son the best education I can. We've tried several things along this short journey of ours and hoping somethings will stay or we'll find things that work better soon.
