I'm always looking for books to read. But lately its been more books on helping my child or understanding my child. What have you.
Do you have an recommendations on books to read. I am truly looking to raise a Christian son. I know there are many out there that are not here for religious reasons, and I'm not either, but its been wonderful to find like minded people. And I've also like meeting others as well.
So any books whether they are religious views or not are welcomed here. |

Shepherding a Child's Heart. I thought it was a wonderful book. What I liked best was that it help redirect my thinking. My goal is not to produce a well behaved child. Rather, it is my hopes to produce a child that passionately loves the Lord. Good behavior is only a "fruit" of being submitted to a heavenly Father.
This book does advocate spanking. The word translated throughout Proverbs as rod (shebet) can also be translated sceptor or tribe. It is a term of authority and protection. We establish authority in our kid's life in many ways. Additionally, in Psalm 23, we are told that the rod is to comfort us. Tripp's book does outline other methods, but you will read scathing on-line reviews.
What I found worked best with my daughter, by far, is a concept known in attachment therapy as Tomato Staking or Lego Level. Marissa preferred Mommy and me time. Essentially, until Marissa was able to behave appropriately, she was in our eyesight. Spending quantity time with your child is the best way to pass on your values.
I had to practice my response so that my tone of voice was not angry. I tried to communicate with my words that she was still loved and excepted and exceptable.
"Oh, I see you are having trouble remembering so many rules. I am such an awesome mom, I am going to help you by giving you only one rule to remember all day! Wherever I go, you go too. Let's gather a few toys and books into this box so that you can take them with you when you follow me. You can play as long as you want. When you get tired of playing, let me know by leaving the room I am in. Then, I will help you put your toys away and you can work with me."
Ray Comfort also has a sermon called "Bringing Your Kids to Christ and Keeping Them There." You have to buy this tape, but you can pick up most of the concepts in some of his sermons that are available on-line.
