Has anyone done this? I want to do this with my son sometime this school yr. But would also love any books to go with to help learn things as they happen and such.
Google for the Insect Lore website. You can buy the butterfly habitat and the larva and the food for the larva. They'll send it all to your door. They'll also tell you what to feed the butterflies once they've hatched.
There is much information on the internet about this. I have 3 chrysalises and caterpillar that should soon make one sitting on my desk in canning jars. It is VERY exciting. We were able to watch the one wiggle his way out of his skin just the other day as he formed his chrysalis.
I also just found out that the difference between a cacoon and chrysalis is that a moth makes a cacoon (I have two of those upstairs...we're bug people now I guess LOL) and it is usually bigger and has a rough exterior. A chrysalis is what a butterfly makes and is smaller and very smooth in texture.
