Kids, cows & trying to help Grandma

Posted in On The Farm

The other day ds and I were outside with my mom. We have 10 cows, that well just don't like to stay in the fence. My parents and my dh have fixed fence and put in fence posts galore and those cows jumped the fence.

Anyway mom and dad put up electric fence so the cows stay in. There's a field behind mom and dads house that is being used as pasture. We also have 8 horses that are normally with the cows. But mom and dad took a section of the field put the electric fence around for the cows, put a lane so the horses could be at the other end and they can come and go freely to drink water. The cows mom has to open the gate, let them up and put them back.

Anyway the cows wanted up for water so mom let them up, and normally they go right back out, the other day they decided to check out the tub we have out there for trace mineralized salt. It was empty at the time so they just stood around not looking interested in going back out.

So my ds decides to try and help grandma out. He heads out and goes to the tub, picks it up and starts to walk with it, next thing we know the cows are running towards him, so he takes off running with this black tub in his hand. My mom yells from the field "Drop the tub!" He flings the tub and kept running, The cows of course stopped at the tub to check it out. They had thought he put the salt in it.

So mom hollars up to ds to put some salt in it. I was on the other side of the fence closest to the barn so I went and got what was left in the bag, handed it to ds and told him to put it in the tub. This is something he's done many times without any issues.

The cows see him with the bag and ds is taking the long way around to get to the tub, then the cows run after him again. Mom and I are yelling for him to hurry up. He veered around the cows to the tub dumped it and got out of there. After he veered off the cows stopped and took longer to turn around.

Needless to say the salt didn't last long with 10 of them around this one small tub. But we had, had one entertaining moment in time watching ds run with cows following. I never thought the cows would run over salt. Since any other time I've seen them just walk quickly when you have it to put out.

It was one of those moments you had to see for yourself. It was funny and of course you are worried about your poor kid getting run down by cows. I think the funniest part was him flinging the tub that sent me over the edge.

And all just to try and help grandma get the cows out. You'd think it would be easier to just get behind and herd them out, but these cows are really strange, the scatter when you try to herd them. So I didn't want them running and going through the fence or jumping the fence. Ds just thought he could get them out by taking the tub. Little did he know they would try and run him down.

All in all everyone was fine, just my ds getting a bit more exercise then he barganed for.

About Me

Everyday ramblings about my family life, with my husband and son, on the farm. I'm Emily, mom to one son who I'll refer to as CJ. Married for 12 years been together almost 14 years. We live in North Central, Minnesota in the boonies. We are on our 4th year in Homeschooling and its been fun and a great descision. Sometimes my posts will relate to personal issues I'm dealing with while trying to give my son the best education I can. We've tried several things along this short journey of ours and hoping somethings will stay or we'll find things that work better soon.
