Monday Morning

Ah here it is a lovely Monday morning. I don't often say that, but so far today's went well. I think its due to having the weekend to myself for most of it. And the fact that CJ's room is clean!

I'm sitting here again searching out websites, while waiting on CJ to finsih up his breakfast so we can get started with a few school items before we have to leave to go to his PE and Art classes.

Today we will be starting to read Stuart Little I somehow ended up with 2 copies of it, so this will come in handy as CJ and I can take turns reading aloud. One of the books is the one I had as a child, poor thing looks pretty ragged, but will work. I also found out I have 2 copies of The Call of the Wild as well, one from when I was a kid as well. Then one I bought for reading with CJ a couple years ago. So that's interesting. I think any book we have will try to get a second one at the library when we read them. That way he can follow along as well as read aloud.

We'll be doing the questions for Stuart Little and MANY other books from this website I found on a friends website. Its a great website! Book Units I'm looking forward to it. But of course when I mentioned to CJ that we would be starting to read a book he's like "what book?" in this nervous, apprehensive type of way as he was standing there...lol. I'm sure he'd rather not read books period but I need to do something to show him that reading books is a wonderful thing. Plus he needs strengthing in that area so hopefully it won't be like pulling teeth and he'll actually learn/pay attention.

I plan to take my copy of Stuart Little with so while CJ is in his classes I can read ahead and see if I can actually come up with any questions that aren't on the ones from the online website. I'm so not that good at stuff like that but am willing to give it a go.

I'm also going to pay attention to any words he struggles with, making a list of them and seeing if we can work on those are spelling/vocabulary words. A fellow homeschooler shared a neat spelling thing after attending the Homeschool Convention in their area. And it looked like it was really neat. Its for the right-brained child. Not sure if she blogged about it or not will have to check on that. So anything is worth trying as CJ some stuff doesn't work. You could have him write the same word over and over, but all he ever is really doing is copying the previous one instead of learning it. So its time to try something different. I also have with his spelling words made flash cards with the word on one side and defination on the other, to help him. But I need to get back to that. I'll just give that a go with this new idea.

I'm just not really good at this stuff, I generally need things planned out for me, not thinking on my own and creating my own stuff.....lol. I thought it would be YEARS of Homeschooling b4 I'd attempt that part. But something needs to be done to help CJ better.

I was telling my husband about stuff I wanted to try for the History part. We are using The History of Our United States from Abeka and its great but something with all the people they talk about its tough for CJ to remember them long term basically. So I've decided to stop where we are at the moment, and check out books from the library that pertain to the time periods one chapter at a time, and see if things help him make more sense. Course my husband sort of looked weird about it, probably trying to figure out how reading some fiction books along with non fiction books would help at all. But he'd get a general idea of how life was back in those times, how things happened. And so forth. I'm hoping it will just help things click, and since we need to work on reading comprehension this helps then too. And we could pick words as vocabulary/spelling words from there as well on words he's not sure on.

I'm excited about this just pray it all falls into place as I see things in my head.

I also think I'm going to have so many websites bookmarked that I"ll forget about some. Or I just need to STOP searching. But there seem to be so many good ones out there, that are free as well as what I'm looking for. AHHHHHHHH.

Well I'm going to end this for now, be back later!

Do you think maybe making a timeline would help him? I know it helps some kids to see things laid out in a line on the wall. (the visual learners) And it helps some kids to color a figure and cut it out and actually tape it on the wall.

About Me

Everyday ramblings about my family life, with my husband and son, on the farm. I'm Emily, mom to one son who I'll refer to as CJ. Married for 12 years been together almost 14 years. We live in North Central, Minnesota in the boonies. We are on our 4th year in Homeschooling and its been fun and a great descision. Sometimes my posts will relate to personal issues I'm dealing with while trying to give my son the best education I can. We've tried several things along this short journey of ours and hoping somethings will stay or we'll find things that work better soon.
