May. 10, 2006 - Article on High Achievers

I found this article on high achievers and thought I'd pass it on. Although much of this is written about traditionally-schooled children, homeschoolers can be just as achievement oriented. I remember my years of homeschooling and constantly fighting the urge to force them to do more in order to validate my choice of homeschooling. It's a constant battle for all of us. Here's the article

What a great article. I can TOTALLY relate!!! I was one of those high achievers with lots of "impressive" stuff on my transcript, and exactly for the reasons that were stated. When I'd meet with my counselor (who was totally useless), I mentioned that I wanted to be an oncologist (study cells-- you know, like a lab rat). I'll never forget the look he gave me-- pretty much said "It's like being a nurse when you can be a doctor!" (hey, a nurse is a GREAT job where they do most of the work). So I changed my major and decided to be a doctor...and changed it again my senior year in college when I realized that I was crying all the time, completely stressed out and NOT happy. But you know, when you're so smart you're not supposed to admit that all you've ever really wanted was to get married and have a family.

I truly hope that my children will love to learn and truly find what career/profession/trade will make them happy...what God's Plan for them truly is! And I certainly hope they figure it out before their senior year of college!

Thanks again-- you find the greatest articles to share!

God bless you,
Marsha

I don't want my almost 16 year old to hate learning and I feel like I have been pressuring her to learn. She is pretty strong willed so I don't think I ever win completely anyway. But this is the reason I have been reconsidering curriculum choices. I don't think she really wants to go to college anyway but she may change her mind and I would like for her to be prepared. Thank you for the comment on my post and I will try to take a break it just seems this whole year has been that way for us. One big break I mean. The girls are smart and I know they are learning I just always fear it is not enough.

When I settle down this evening with my coffee I'll take a look-see at the article.
