May. 12, 2006 - History Through the Ages Review by Cindy Downes

History Through the Ages is a MUST-HAVE resource for all homeschoolers, whether you use a prepared curriculum or create your own. By creating a timeline of events, your child will better be able to put the people, events, and places, scientists, musicians, artists, and authors they are studying in historical perspective. I learned a lot just from reviewing this resource!

Amy Pak has done an excellent job of creating this so that it's easy and FUN to use! The Record of Time is fabulous - a beautiful, hard-bound, 3-ring binder that you will keep forever. You can purchase the timeline figures already printed - just cut out, color, and place on your timeline, or you can buy the CD which includes all the timeline figures in PDF and GIF formats. Using the GIF format, you can resize the artwork to use in worksheets, coloring pages, composition theme paper, and whatever else you can think of. I used my Photoshop Elements program and page layout program to print them pages at a time, either all of one kind for multiple kids or all different on a page for one child. I love how easy it is to use in other applications.

My only complaints are that (1) the pages in the Record of Time are a little difficult to turn, and (2) I would love to see the timeline pieces in color. Because the drawings are drawn in detail, there is little space in which to color them. They are not line drawings like a coloring book. I would rather have had either line drawings which would be easy to color and/or colorized, detailed pieces that are ready to use. (3) I would love to see a search box where you could look for a specific piece without reading through the indexes. Currently, you can scroll through a list of pieces listed alphabetically, chronologically, and by topic. Maybe she will address these issues in future editions.

Regardless of my minor complaints, I heartily recommend this resource. It seems a little expensive at first glance, but when you realize that it will serve you throughout your schooling years and beyond, it is a small price to pay.
