Jump Math Fractions Unit was written for a classroom setting, but I can definitely see its use in the homeschool setting for delayed learners. I would loved to have used this with my son. He was unable to read until he was 9 and his small-motor skills were slow developing which made handwriting difficult in his primary grades. Working with a traditional math textbook was very difficult and his confidence level was at an all-time low. Jump Math Fractions would have been just the thing he needed as "the best way to motivate children who have fallen behind is to skip them ahead, convince them that they are capable of doing work beyond their grade level. The Fractions Units, every student's introduction to the JUMP material, serves this purpose."
There is no reading and handwriting required. It uses visual diagrams and numbers - perfect for any child who has difficulty reading and writing. "Children are guided in extremely simple steps at first, but as they acquire the confidence and focus that comes from constant success, they are led to discover mathematical principles for themselves through games, magic tricks, puzzles, manipulatives and "toy" models of problems."
The course takes about three to four weeks to complete and is recommended for grades 3-6. Once completed, the child will have learned how to name fractions, write fractions, add and subtract fractions, convert fractions, and work with mixed and improper fractions. After learning fractions so easily, it won't be hard to convince him to try more!
