Jul. 6, 2008 - Some Interesting Statistics!

I am reading the book, Talent is Never Enough by John Maxwell, and came across some statistics that will interest those of you who are homeschooling teenagers. On page 2, Maxwell states:
  • More than 50 percent of all CEO's of Fortune 500 companies had C or C- averages in college.
  • Sixty-five percent of all U.S. senators came from the bottom half of their school class.
  • Seventy-five percent of U.S. presidents were in the Lower-Half Club in school.
  • More than 50 percent of millionaire entrepreneurs never finished college!
So, next time you think your average child is never going to amount to anything, remember these statistics! And read this book!

May. 11, 2006 - MUST READ: Against the Flow

In the Spring issue of the Old Schoolhouse magazine, there is an article called "Against the Flow" written by Nathaniel Knight (page 118-120). You MUST READ this article. Nathaniel is a homeschool graduate and freelance writer. He has done an excellent job on this article setting down Biblical reasons for alternatives to traditional schooling. And he is proof that it works! Good job Nathaniel!

May. 10, 2006 - Article on High Achievers

I found this article on high achievers and thought I'd pass it on. Although much of this is written about traditionally-schooled children, homeschoolers can be just as achievement oriented. I remember my years of homeschooling and constantly fighting the urge to force them to do more in order to validate my choice of homeschooling. It's a constant battle for all of us. Here's the article

Mar. 31, 2006 - College Savings Alternative

Those of you who are saving for college should check out having your child open a Roth IRA in contrast to you participating in a 529 plan. Your child will have to have a job (hire him/her to work in your business!) in order to participate. All contributions to the Roth can be taken out at any time for any reasons (excluding the earnings/interest on the contributions) without tax penalties! And, because the Roth is a retirement program, it usually does not show up on FASFA. This is a much better deal than the 529 plan for many people. Check with your accountant or financial planner for more info.

Nov. 29, 2005 - US Army Welcomes Homeschoolers

U.S. Army Welcomes Homeschoolers. HSLDA has been working with the military for several years to remove discriminatory barriers for homeschool graduates. As a result, many homeschoolers are serving our country faithfully in the armed services.

This year, the Army has been aggressively forging ahead to open doors for homeschoolers. They have recently implemented a policy change, which makes qualified homeschoolers eligible for the same Army enlistment incentives as a traditional high school graduate. Cash bonuses up to $20,000 for enlistments of three or more years and access to the Army College Fund, which provides up to $70,000 for college, are included in the benefits the Army is now making available to homeschoolers.

This change in the Army's policy is part of a special test program that is being developed to identify applicants who are likely to adapt to the Army and successfully complete their first term of service.

In the past, the Army has found that individuals with traditional high school diplomas adapt to the rigors of military life the best. However, homeschoolers, who do not have traditional high school diplomas, are now proving themselves to be successful in the military as well.

For more information on the Army's new pilot program, contact your local Army recruiter or visit http://www.goarmy.com/hslda.U.S. Army Welcomes Homeschoolers
